Degree, Finarry!
I finally received my degree. It's huge. I expected an 8x11 in a floppy envelope since that's how my Berkeley degree arrived, but instead this thing is 14x17 and came with its own (faux-?) leather portfolio. It's so big I don't know what to do with it. I'd hoped to just file it away with all my other 8x11 documents. Maybe I can request a smaller one.
Of course, a smaller one may never reach me. You see, they put this degree in the mail almost two months ago. It took me until today to get it because they sent it to my classmate. Huh?
Fortunately, that classmate contacted me (via Facebook, go figure) to tell me she had it. She'd come home one day and found two degrees on her doorstep. Talk about ROI!
I'm displeased with the bozo(s) who slapped the wrong mailing label on the package, but whatever, my degree is finally here! Hoorays!

Bear With Me, I Need To Waah
It's okay for me to apply for something and not succeed. If someone else was better, or if I simply wasn't good enough, so be it. I don't mind working harder to succeed the next time.
That said...
Last year, I applied for a fellowship at school. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but I felt I had a chance. I didn't get the fellowship, but that was okay. I'd tried my best, and I figured that the person who got it must have been better somehow.
Earlier this month, I attended our monthly student presentations. This is the same series I presented at last month with pink donuts as props. There were some decent presentations, and one excruciatingly painful presentation. Quite frankly, it was the WORST PRESENTATION I'VE EVER SEEN. The speaker just stood there in front of everyone reading from a printout.
A few days later, some tiny part of the back of my brain remembered the speaker's name from somewhere. The thought faded and returned several times over the next couple weeks.
Today, I finally remembered to look it up. As that tiny bit of brain had suspected, the presenter of the WPIES had been the recipient of the fellowship I wasn't good enough for a year prior.
This makes me wonder, what did WPIES do to deserve the fellowship?
Whatever it was, it'd better have been damned stellar.
On a whim, I downloaded the WPIES PowerPoint and looked at the notes. I Googled a sentence from one of the slide notes and found an article with two full paragraphs of what had been read to us. Was the article included as even a reference? No.
Performance and leadership my ass. Whether I applied for that fellowship or not, this person should NOT have received it. I don't care how many contributions they made to the program, or how much financial need they had. That uninspired, unrehearsed, partially plagiarized presentation that we've had two years to prepare for should be reason enough for disqualification.
That's just fucked up.

Bikes And BOOM!!
Now that homework is a thing of the past, I have time to start knocking items off my to-do list. Today's tasks: car, bikes, and BOOM. I rolled out of bed at the leisurely hour of something past noon, grabbed some food, and slapped on some sunblock (gosh, it was nice out today!), and got to work.
Now complete, in order:
- washed new used roof top bike rack system
- washed outside of car
- installed new used roof top bike rack system
- washed inside of car
- fixed car speaker static again (I hope it sticks this time)
- re-installed subwoofer (BOOM!!)
- put rear seats back in
I'll try to remember to take a picture of it tomorrow with a couple bikes on top. :)

Mystery Of The Proxy Cache
The protocol for submitting deliverables for school is to upload them to our team Tigris account. It's generally good practice for all members of the team to validate final submissions made to the site, and I was having some trouble validating our latest submission. I kept seeing what looked to be an unfinished version of the document. I cleared my browser cache, tried again, and saw the same thing. I switched browsers, to one I use only for testing, and still saw the same thing. I checked with a couple teammates; they saw the correct final document.
I was thoroughly puzzled, until...
teammate: maybe some proxy cache

School Update
32 days until graduation, and a couple things to report on / whine about.
Scotland Yard
I gave my solo presentation at school last night. Scotland Yard, as it's called, is a graduation requirement that I've been putting off for about a year and a half. It turned out to be a piece of cake (or donut, perhaps). I talked about low fidelity prototyping, managed to work pink donuts into my presentation, and actually had a pretty good time. I'm relieved to have it behind me, and I'm glad I had fun doing it.
Senioritis
Most of my teammates at school seem to have lost all motivation to work. It's somewhat frustrating to me, because I am, at the moment, extremely motivated to do the best that I can and finish strong. Because we work in teams, however, this means that even though I do everything I'm supposed to (and sometimes more) on time and ahead of time, others on the team can't be bothered to. I maintain a damned clear calendar of what needs to happen and when for us to stay on schedule (a schedule created through team consensus, so no excuses!), and even though it's freely accessible online, people seem to "forget" we need to meet, or "not know" that something is due by a certain date.
If these were people I'd never worked with before I'd probably be really angry. My current teammates, however, have been teammates of mine on past teams, and I know they can be damned good if they want to be. I also know how hard it is to focus and work when we're tired and just waiting to graduate, because that's exactly how I felt a month or two ago. Thus, I cut them slack and just chalk it up to senioritis.
I find it kind of interesting how I snapped myself out of senioritis. I know I had it because I suffered through the first half of this course, and I'm sure it showed in the quality of my work. Then, during our one week break in the middle of the course, I decided that I didn't want to limp to the finish line; I wanted to charge through it. I wanted to finish and stand tall and look back and be proud of how I got there.
Senioritis-schmitis. I'm busting through that finish line and I'm dragging my team with me.

My CMU Commencement
Yesterday was CMU's 2007 commencement ceremony. I don't officially graduate until August, but this was my chance to be part of the big show, and to visit the main campus. Plus, I wanted my hood, and I didn't want to wait until August.
We got up super early to make sure we got parking on campus. My dad had somehow hurt his ankle just before the trip, and we didn't want to make him walk very far. I won't say just how early we got there, but it was early enough to score a second floor parking spot in the garage attached to the stadium.
I remember talking to G about commencement a few months ago. She said something about how it was cool because they would have bagpipes there. I thought, okay, so there'll be a guy playing a bagpipe up front. As it turns out, she meant that there would be random people playing bagpipes throughout campus all day. Hello, man in a kilt wandering around blowing into a squeezy bag!
It rained a little as we were getting ready to start, but stopped by the time we filed into the stadium. By the middle of the ceremony, it was clear and sunny. I was dressed for cold rainy weather. Bake bake bake.
Our speaker this year was Bill Cosby. He showed up in sweats and a CMU cap and walked to the stage with what I guess was the school's new official mascot. So, picture Bill Cosby, sweats, Crocs, a CMU cap, a gown draped over that entire outfit, and a black scottie dog on a leash. There were a bunch of speeches and honorary degrees given, and then he stepped up to speak.
He opened by calling us all "NERDS!", puzzled over why anyone would want to be called a nerd, launched into a story about his first big gig, and followed with a lesson from his story. The closing was short and sweet; he said, simply, "In closing, I close."
I'm out of things to say, except that there will be pictures and probably a video online in the near future. So, in closing, I close too.
[ Update: Here's a good writeup of the commencement, complete with a picture of Bill and Scottie. ]

Hello, CMU Campus!
We finally made it to CMU today, after getting stuck in 3-4 hours of traffic in New York yesterday and another hour of traffic entering Pittsburgh today. I picked up my commencement garb, did a tour of campus, and had an organized dinner with a group of fellow Pittsburgh commencers from the West campus. It was nice to finally see the campus I almost went to for undergrad. As Melsybo had warned, it's small! Everything's packed together pretty tightly, unlike at the UC's, where campus just sprawls and sprawls and sprawls. The buildings all look the same, but overall campus is green and fairly pretty, i.e. deceptively pleasant, in May. The grassy mini hills look like fun for winter sledding, but I don't think I'd want to venture outside in the winter, even for sledding.
The "stadium" is a football field surrounded by a track, with a set of bleachers on one side. It's kind of cute. :)
Bedtime. Gotta get to campus at the crack of dawn tomorrow to get parking.

After failing in my attempt to name my hockey team Flying Pancake, I suggested it for my new team at school. People ran with it, morphed it into ePancake, iPancake, p4Nc@K3!!, ePenCake (huh?), ePancakeProPremiere, and finally settled on ePancakePro. I was hoping for p4Nc@K3!!, but eCommerce beat 1337 in a 3-2 vote. No complaints, though; it's still pancake and it's not M5. I much prefer pictures of flapjacks over pictures of sedans. Way funnier. Five Minute Breather
In the last 30 hours, I've assembled two papers, written two more, and summarized two articles for my team. I have two more articles to go; then I can take a bit of a breather until my meeting tomorrow night.
Aaron and I were going to go to Yuri's Night tonight, but instead I had to stay home and do schoolwork. Sucks that my school schedule and workload is affecting him too. I'm trying hard not to be all school and no Aaron - I ditched a non-team school meeting to go see Muse with him on Monday and pushed to reschedule our Saturday meeting so we could go to Sea Otter - but I feel like I've had to say, "I can't do [x]; I have school," way too much the last few months.
Instead of going to Yuri's Night, Aaron made us dinner and dessert while I worked on my paper. He made everything from scratch, and it was all mighty tasty. I'm stuffed, and grateful. I don't think I could have handled paper writing and eating on my own. My brain is pretty fried.
One more week of this craziness, then one week off. Faster, week, faster!

Life Remote
I'm short on sleep today, but not because I didn't schedule enough hours for it. I have a ton of work to do for school, and it's weighing on my mind. That meant that I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about combining five people's work into one paper, and every time I tried to go back to sleep I'd start seeing gigantic lists of ideas in Word. I don't know how long this went on for, but at one point I was ready to climb out of bed and go for a walk just to clear my head.
School craziness is likely to increase and won't end until the 20th. Work is pretty busy these days, too, and about to get even busier. Plus, holy crap, I have a 2 week stretch of Boston, Pittsburgh, and Phoenix starting in a little over a month.
I need a life remote with a pause button and a slow play feature.

Collective Ownership
Collective ownership, in the context of this post, refers to a practice of many agile software development methodologies. I've come across it time and again in various courses over the last year and a half. It seems to me like a good idea: the overall quality of a product increases when everyone working on it has the knowledge and power to improve any part of it.
At school, we always work in teams. Sometimes our product is code, sometimes documents, sometimes presentations. In the past, my teams have operated with a fairly strong sense of collective ownership. Everyone would work to increase the quality of all parts of our products. This meant that I could apply my pixel-aligning, capitalization and grammar Nazi, OCD-like edits to any part of a team deliverable without fear of offending other members of the team.
My current team, however, seems different. We spend a lot of time together in meetings, but I don't feel a strong sense of collective ownership on the final product. Is it because we are an entirely remote team? (My previous teams have met wholly or partly on campus, whereas this one meets by teleconference only; I don't know that I've ever actually met any of my current teammates.) Is it because we're 5 different brains that aren't quite on the same page? Is it because we are each assigned to work individually on parts of the deliverable? Is it me? I did miss the first two weeks, after all, and I don't feel that my team has gotten a good sense of who I am over the phone. Perhaps it's some other reason.
In any case, this perceived lack of collective ownership makes me reluctant to edit the slides for our presentation this coming Thursday. I see misaligned elements, haphazard capitalization, inconsistent terminology, extraneous punctuation, and way too many tiny words squished onto certain slides. I want to fix them, but I don't know how well global edits would be received. It's their slide, I think, and they're delivering it, so I shouldn't mess with it. No one seems to be editing anyone else's slides anyhow.
Is there a point to this post? Not really. I guess I just wanted to note somewhere the fact that collective ownership has gone from a concept that sounds pretty good and seems to make sense to one that I understand, in terms of both its usefulness and the consequences of its absence.
As for the presentation, I reckon I'll broach the subject in our next meeting. Perhaps afterward our presentation will improve in leaps and bounds. I'm sure there's a lot more to improve than just what my anal-retentive eye can see.
And yes, I always spell anal-retentive with a hyphen.

I Hate Teamwork
Okay, I don't really. Well, sometimes I do. Sometimes, like today. Today, teamwork sucks. It's frustrating, confusing, disjoint, and annoying. Feels like we're all off doing our own different things on the same thing.
Then there are the meetings. 7 meetings in 8 days. I think that's a new record.
Saturday: 9:30 AM, 2 hours
Monday: 7:00 PM, 1.5 hours
Tuesday: 6:30 PM, 1 hour
Wednesday: 7:00 PM, 2 hours (estimated)
Thursday: 7:30 PM, 1.5 hours (estimated)
Friday: 7:30 PM, 1.5 hours (estimated)
Saturday: 9:30 AM, 2 hours (estimated)
And that's not counting time spent doing actual work, which would be a lot more efficient if there weren't 5 different brains trying to do 5 different things.
Or maybe I'm the different brain, and the other 4 brains are doing the same thing. I doubt it, though.

There Seems So Far Away
Well, I thought I was almost there. The week so far:
Monday: work, school until 9:30, read for scuba
Tuesday: work, scuba until 9, prep for school
Wednesday: work, swimming, school telecons until 9:30, schoolwork until midnight
Thursday: work, scuba until 10, prep for school
Friday: work, swimming, school school school
As for code freeze, it turns out that that term is not given very much weight at my company. What I thought would be a nice ramp-up week for my new project has in actuality been a week of feature and functionality additions and changes to the old one. I don't like code slush one bit. (No pun intended, but har har har!)
Upcoming for school: prep for our paper due next week, a 2 hour meeting Saturday at 10 AM to discuss, 7 more chapters of reading for Monday, and parts of what I hope will be a well-discussed paper to start writing.
Where did there go?

Almost There ...
For the most part, I seem to have survived my week of way too much to do. I've read 8 of my 9 papers/chapters, passed my swim test, and made it to all my classes. All my code is checked in for my project at work, with the exception of a special build file, but there are delays elsewhere that will buy me time for that task. I also managed to squeeze in three hour-plus team meetings for school and another few hours of schoolwork that I had somehow overlooked in my stressed-out Tuesday inventory.
All that came at the expense of a weekend dedicated to reading. I did, however, find time to cook dinner, bake a pie, and play mahjong. As luck would have it, we managed to plan mahjong over what turned out to be the most beautiful sunny hours of the weekend. Woopsies. That could have been biking (pick a bike) time. It was totally nice to hang out and do something different with friends, though. The social time probably did more to relax me than riding time would have. :)
All that remains is a chapter of reading and a few hours of also-overlooked scuba video to watch. That is, until Monday night, when week two of school starts and a whole new set of work gets added to the list.
Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna go to the gym after class on Monday, big long to-do list and all, and relax in the pool. ;)

Too Much!
It's only Tuesday, but I feel worn like it's late in the week already. I have 3 hours of various classes Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights, had to read 3 papers for last night, 3 chapters for tonight (1 more to go as of right now), have another 9 papers/chapters to read for next Monday/Tuesday nights, and a book on swimming that I currently have on loan (thanks Wendy!). On top of that, I somehow need to be able to swim 200 meters and tread for 10 minutes by Thursday night. There are swimming lessons Wednesday and Friday evenings, and code freeze on my project at work at the end of the week.
My body is reacting in typical time stress fasion: I can't sleep past a certain way-too-early-for-me hour. I suppose that's a good thing, since it means I have more waking hours to get things done, but it also means I get less rest, which often results in my getting sick.
On top of that, I'm having disturbing dreams about missing a really good friend's wedding whilst drowning in a river of people. Instead of bobbing for air I'm bobbing for a view. And then I get swept away.
Next week, provided I pass my swim test, more of the same. And the week after that, too.
Hello? Clone? Where are you?

Hooray For Offsites
Our team needed a little change of pace, so in lieu of our usual Tuesday night on-campus meeting we opted for a fun offsite. League Night and a company party thwarted our plans for bowling, but we managed to turn it into a tasty Thai dinner and a couple games of pool instead. We didn't get much work done, but it was really nice to just chill and hang out with my teammates.
I even had a beer. Well, half, but that's enough to turn me plenty red. The last time I had beer was, oh, at our last team outing. What can I say? School drives me to drink.
I also tried a sip of some ridiculously smooth tequila courtesy of a guy named Mohammed who came over, jokingly challenged us, then broke out a couple personal cues for what turned out to be a pretty amusing and friendly game of pool. I asked him what it was, and he said it was 100 year old tequila. Then he gave me some story about how he's some financial dude with connections whose friends pay him in random packages of stuff like $1,200 bottles of tequila. Not sure how much of that to believe, but the tequila was mighty tasty. Move over, Patron Silver. Move waaay over.
You can try it too, if you go to Palo Alto Bowl on Tuesday nights. Just look for the guy with the baseball cap, The Rock T-shirt, shorts, and white socks pulled up to just below the knee. ;)

Those of you who asked me what I plan to do with my time off probably heard me say that I can't wait to twiddle my thumbs. I wasn't kidding.
SoopahViv: *twiddle*
SoopahViv: :-D

We started a new certificate at school tonight.

Spare Change for Beer?
UPDATE: The survey period is now over. Many, many thanks to all of you who participated!
Er, I mean, spare some minutes for school?
My team at school is working on a project involving social networking and movie recommendations. We're defining requirements right now, and would like to get a better idea of how people choose the movies they watch. We figured the most efficient way to find out would be through an online survey.
Here's the part where I ask for a few minutes of your time. I would really really appreciate it if you could take the survey.
It's here: http://soopahviv.net/survey.php (edit: now a dead link)
Okay, it's not really there. That's just a redirect that lets me count how many people are actually clicking on that link. I have a quota to fill. :-/
The above link redirects you to curdinator.com:8089. (Sorry, it's not my server so I have no control over the port.) It may not work if your company blocks 8089 traffic. If that's the case I just have to hope that you'll remember to take the survey when you get home. ;-)
Thanks in advance for your help, everyone!

Still Bouncing
Okay, it's tomorrow morning and I'm logged in. What's the system telling me?
It's telling me, "Oops, we're not quite as ready as we thought we'd be. Check back tomorrow."
Weeeak!

Are Grades Out Yet? Huh huh?
Back when I was an undergrad, I'd wait impatiently for grades to be released, practically sitting by the phone so I could call Infobears the moment they were.
This year, I know my grades, but I can't log in to see them in official form until tomorrow morning.
Is it tomorrow yet?? I need to submit my expense report!
*bounces impatiently*

Dinner, What's That?
Consumed, in lieu of dinner:
- 2 Krispy Kreme doughnuts (thanks, Currrd)
- 1/2 a bag of extra buttery movie theater popcorn
Accomplished, by way of skipping dinner:
- handed in final project
- watched Aeon Flux
3 more small deliverables to go, and hellooo 3 week break! I'll get to have real dinners, exercise, buy a couch, and sit around pretending to be lazy.
Maybe I'll even go to Tahoe and play in the snow ...

Dreaming In Powerpoint
It's final presentation week at school. My team has been working feverishly to get everything together, bug fixing, pixel aligning (okay, mostly me on that one), script writing, rehearsing, rewriting, rehearsing some more, lather, rinse, repeat.
This lead to non-stop dreaming about our presentation last night. I woke up repeatedly during the night from Powerpoint dream after Powerpoint dream. Usually, I am able to quickly identify dream thoughts and reroot my mind in the real world, but since it's been (and will continue to be) a Powerpoint week, I found myself lying there, totally confused. I think I actually shook my head a few times to try to get the Powerpoint dreams out of my head. Didn't work.
On a related note, Powerpoint ate my Saturday night hockey game. :(

Our Saturday 10AM meeting is cancelled this week.
I don't have to go to school until 2PM tomorrow.
I can sleep in.
I'm so excited I don't know if I'll be able to fall asleep.

And So It Begins ...
I totally want to play in the NCWHL league-wide pick-up next Friday. It's shaping up to be a super fun bunch on the ice.
Unfortunately, I won't be joining them. I'll be at day one of orientation for school.
I hope this isn't an indication of what my hockey schedule will be like for the next two years.
