Never-ending Playlist
There's an ice cream truck driving down my street. Now, I know that kids love to hear the jingle of approaching ice cream truck, but if I had to drive that thing, I'd go nuts.
It's not as if I don't already have enough songs stuck in my head. It seems I *always* have a song stuck in my head. Sometimes I have to put music on just to clear enough cycles in my brain to think.
There's no particular theme to the type of song in my head. Sometimes it's something from the radio. Sometimes it's the opening to the Super Mario Brothers theme song, complete with the coin jingle from the first question mark box.
The other night, I said to Aaron, "I have a song stuck in my head. Wanna hear it?"
I don't remember what his reply was, but I sang it for him anyway.
"The wheels on the bus go 'ROUND and 'round..."

Pancake La La
On my way into work today, I wanted a little music, but was at a loss since there's no reception on 680 and I've listened to pretty much everything in the giant CD wallet I keep in my car. Thanks, new work commute.
All that remained was an unlabeled CD-RW. I popped it in, and whaddaya know, it had Paris Hilton and K-Fed on it.
If you ever want a good laugh, I highly suggest one of those albums.
Morning commute gem: Filling in the melody with "la la la la la" instead of actual words because, well, I can only guess that it's because Paris couldn't think of enough actual words for the song. Oh, and all the boys all the silly boys they want to fi-ight over her.
Evening commute gem: Oh wait, I already wrote about this. Pancake Man, sounds like a comic book hero! Imagine the battles he could have! K-Fed vs. Waffle Man! Biscuit Boy Attacks! Who will stop Monsieur Crepe's devious plans to squish the Pancakes of the world into conformity? I think I'm on to something here...
I bet the new Britney album is just as good. *fires up BitTorrent*

Exile On Mainstream
Cracked open the new Matchbox Twenty CD last night. It's shorter than their other albums, but just as good. I was listening to it on my way into work this morning, and I realized that this is their first album since Mad Season that hasn't socked me in the gut. They haven't changed, but I have, and that's a really good thing.
[ Update: I forgot to mention, I've been listening to the new Foo Fighters album also, and I am happy to report that none of their new songs sock me in the gut and make me mad (as opposed to MB20's songs, which sock me in the gut and make me sad). They've gotten more mellow in their old age, though, so maybe that has something to do with it. ]

Incubus
Aaron inquired, so here it is, a post for those of you who missed the Flickr set.
- We went to see Incubus at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Saturday night.
- A Hydrapak accident almost destroyed our tickets before the show.
- We got to visit the T-Rex in VLSB. Hooray!
- We also got to dine on Fat Slice and Yogurt Park.
- Concerts don't suck when I'm not standing on the floor staring at the backs of people's heads.
- Maybe I should go see Linkin Park later this month.
aaron: you didnt blog the concert?
SoopahViv: i wasn't sure what to write

SoopahViv: enjoyed incubus

B-Buck-Buck-Buck!
B-buck-buck-buck! B-buck-buck-bucka-bucka-buck-buck-buck!
What I just spent the last hour doing:
- transferred an episode of Robot Chicken from my TiVo to my desktop
- installed TiVo File Decoder on my desktop, only to find that I was missing a dll
- installed TiVo File Decoder on my laptop because it was easier than finding the dll
- transferred the episode of Robot Chicken from my desktop to my laptop
- decoded it (duh)
- installed AoA Audio Extractor on my laptop
- extracted the audio around the closing credits
- transferred the extracted audio to my desktop
- installed Cool Edit on my desktop
- trimmed and amplified the extracted audio
- started this post to share with you the joy of b-buck-buck-buck!
- looked up the Robot Chicken website to include as a link
- found a perfect copy of the closing credits song on their download page
There's a lesson to be learned here, but I really don't want to think about it right now.
I might as well post the file; it'll save you a few clicks and an unzipping. Here, enjoy.

Songs From Black Mountain
Live has a new album out. It's actually pretty good. That surprises me because I didn't like their last album. But then, maybe it was because their last album had some lame-O religious title. In any case, this new album sounds like the Live I know and used to love. Hooray for that.

Strange-ish Day at the Gym
Went to the EA24hF this afternoon, and was handed a bottle of Black Cherry POWERade OPTION upon check-in. I put my stuff in a locker, and when I came back out, this oldish guy who's there every time I am and whom I've only ever seen using stacked weight machines was struggling to remove a plate from the leg press machine. I got some water, saw him still struggling, and went over to help him. He looked confused, like I shouldn't be able to lift plates or something. Later, when I needed to use the leg extension machine, there was a guy sitting on it with a cell phone to his ear and his trainer standing next to him, watching him gab. I rearranged my workout, did some dead lifts, and when I returned he was still sitting there, phone to his ear, trainer by his side. I went off to do some ab work, and when I returned again, same thing. Who has money to waste like that? Finally, he finished his conversation, did one lame set, and left. I hopped on the gab station leg extension machine, started my sets, and had my Depeche Mode interrupted by a loud repetitive booming sound. I looked up and there were big speakers and a portable cheesy karaoke machine fifteen feet away, blasting what turned out to be that annoying Hollaback song. This - is - bananas! B-a-n-a-n-a-s! I finished my set, did a little stretching, got my stuff, and headed out. When I left, the karaoke screen read, "Rapper's (Something-or-other)", and there were these two guys there with mics in their hands and silly grins on their faces. One of them started rapping to some dancey non-rap tune as I walked out the door. I felt bad for the people still in the gym. Perhaps today would have been a good day to take the hamster exercises outside.

No Thank You, Matchbox
I think a lot of you already know that I had my license suspended a few years ago for driving a wee bit too fast. I was on my way to San Diego in my little automatic Civic sedan, and the speed I got clocked at was the result of both surprise and curiosity about just how fast that car could go.
Well, that's half the story. The other half is that I was upset that day, was fueled by just the right bit of upset music, and that combination made for (and always makes for) a severe case of angry lead foot.
Tonight, as I was selecting music to bring on my drive down to San Diego tomorrow, I came across the CD from that day. I pulled the disc out of the case, and just as I was about to drop it in the go pile, I thought better of it.
Wise move, me.

Green Day
No huge post, but a few notes.
Note 1: I think it's funny that cell phones are replacing lighters at concerts.
Note 2: We got a fireworks show at the end (the concert was at Pac Bell Park). It was better than the fireworks show we saw there after a July 4th Giants game a few years back.
Note 3: They released confetti out on the floor, and the convection currents (perhaps that's not quite the right terminology to use) carried it up to the nosebleed seats, where we were.
Note 4: I must be getting old. I was relieved not to be out on the floor.
Note 5: Every time I see them they're better than the last time. :)

More New Music!
Found out yesterday that NIN released a new CD this week. Went to pick it up from Best Buy today. Found out at Best Buy that Limp Bizkit also released a new CD this week. Their last one sucked (yes, I bought it the week it came out), so I decided to listen to some samples online before buying. I found only one, and, of course, since I didn't buy the album, it rocks, so now I have to go back out to buy it.
Or do I? The riffs and beats are awesome, but I'm having a lot of trouble listening to Fred Durst without laughing, ever since (1) watching some random VH1 show where some guy laughed at FD for Rollin', which I loved, but, as the guy correctly pointed out, rhymed "right here" with "right here" and was really nothing more than a hardcore version of the Hokey Pokey and (2) the fatty FD sex video that was posted all over the internet earlier this year.
Maybe I won't be buying the album after all.

Month Of New Music
I've been on a little CD buying spree these last few weeks. On the new rotation list, in order of purchase:
Beck - Guero
Good stuff! Good enough that I want to buy his old albums now.
Garbage - Bleed Like Me
They've become a little more rock than I'd like. Or maybe a little too edgy? I don't know what it is, but I enjoyed their previous albums more.
Autechre - Tri Repetae++
I didn't actually buy this one. My boss burned a copy for me after she found out that I listened to "unlistenable" music. It's a bunch of sounds that come together and remind me of various flavors of electronic music, which I so love. That, and it's great for coding: productivity++;
The Crystal Method - Community Service II
Picked it up just now. Took me forever to find a copy without having to buy it at Tower for 20 bucks. I can't wait to break the seal.
Rob Thomas - ... Something To Be
Picked this one up just now also. He's the lead singer for Matchbox Twenty. I love his voice. Unfortunately, all he ever sings is stuff that makes me cry. Judging from the track listing on the back of the CD, this one will make me cry too. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. Sniff sniff.

Boy Bands
I'll admit it: I used to be a Color Me Badd fan. I bought their debut album with my allowance money and played it on repeat for months. I now have a bunch of their songs on mp3. They always seem to make it onto my random (I swear) mix CDs. This morning, on my drive into work, "I Adore Mi Amor" came on. I know every bit of this song by heart. Until this morning, however, I'd never really paid attention to the title. "I love my love"? What kind of crap is that? And then I thought about their photos in the C.M.B. insert. Buncha wusses! I thought *they* were cool?! What was I smoking?
Yeah, well, I loved N.K.O.T.B. too.
Speaking of which, bad boy Donnie with his "I just got old enough to grow this" goatee used to be my favorite, by far, and one day my mom won two concert tickets plus backstage passes to one of their 3 (probably soldout) shows at Foxboro Stadium. So I went, and I was waiting backstage to meet Donnie, and instead of Donnie they gave us Danny, whom I'd been referring to as Monkeyface right up until I shook his hand, and since he was so nice to everyone, all of a sudden I felt bad, and never called him Monkeyface again.
The end.

For fun, I wrote a little random loader app and effectively turned my YP-55V into a Yepp Shuffle. It reads exported iTunes playlists, optionally shuffles them, and loads the songs onto my player. A simple way to save myself a hundred bucks.
Next feature: take advantage of Nero's command line interface to burn mp3 CD shuffles of my collection.
And after that, really do try to interface with iTunes. I don't want to recreate their genre/artist/album navigation, but I'd like to at least offer a list of playlists and bypass the export step.

I Heart iTunes
It's winning me over, and even making me lean toward getting an iPod instead of an H340 ...
The iTunes Store, however, leaves a lot to be desired. 64 kbps, to be exact. Why anyone would pay for a 128 kbps song, I don't know. Come on, Applefolks, how 'bout some 192?
And this is why I continue to clutter my apartment with CDs.

A $3.95 Gem
I was ripping my stack of Incubus CDs earlier, and when I pulled the disc out for one of their early albums, I noticed it had Sharpie writing on it. Upon further inspection, I realized it was autographed by the band members. I'm not kidding. Why I didn't notice this before, I don't know.
See:

I'm inclined to believe this is real, since it looks to have been signed and sold to the bargain used bins at Amoeba Records in Berkeley back before Incubus became way super duper cool.
I bought the thing for $3.95. That makes me laugh.
Unfortunately, even though they're one of my favorite bands (hence my ownership of such an unpopular CD of theirs), I'm no longer the screaming teenage groupie I used to be (my friends from the FNM days will know what I'm talking about). I'm not even all that excited about it. I just think it's cool.
So, yeah, cool.
For your viewing and comparison enjoyment, here is an Incubus autograph sheet, signed after they got famous.

A Different Sort Of One
I was listening to my mix CD after work today, and the Foo Fighters' "The One" came on. Just like with the Smash Mouth song, when I first heard this song on the radio I had to find a copy ... but for exactly the opposite reason. And now, when I listen to that song, it still triggers the same negative feelings that it did back then. Just as strong, almost, even though it's been years.
Funny how tightly music ties in to memories and emotions.

I made a gigantic mix CD for my drive to LA last night. Dumped the files on my laptop. Listening to them now. Nothing like blasting Dr. Feelgood while writing a servlet!
Now imagine that song inserted between DJ Micro and Ferry Corsten.
On a related note, I came across Smash Mouth's "You Are My Number One" during my collection browsing. When it first came out, I liked it so much I went and bought the entire album. I was surprised when I listened to it last night that it still puts a smile on my face. Now THAT is a feelgood song.

ViV and a Movie
Finally went to check out ViV and a Movie tonight. Unfortunately, no ViV. Looks like they don't play there every Monday anymore. Nonetheless, it was a good time. They showed some great clips and had some very interesting musicians up there. There was one guy who looked to be a 50-something really skinny Japanese (?) man with a guitar and an accent, and when he started playing he sang ... country! Not modern rock country, but that older stuff with the breaking voice and yodeling. It was a hoot! He came up near where we were sitting during one of the later sets, and on our way out we stopped to say hello and let him know we thought he was great. I asked him whether he did this for a living. "Oh no," he replied, "I wish!" So what does he do? He's a teacher's assistant in San Mateo. No kidding! How rad is that?
Some links for you, from some of the good clips they showed:
SEVEN OH FIVE :: Tales of Mere Existence
I tried to look up the name of the Japanese yodeler, and the only thing I could come up with was Toshio Hiromo. Not sure if the last name is correct, but I came across something that someone else had written about seeing a yodeling Japanese cowboy at the Odeon Bar in SF. How many yodeling Japanese cowboys are there in the city? I figure it's probably the same guy.
Woke up early and low on sleep this morning. Perhaps I should head to bed.

Good Music Ruined
A couple weeks ago I finally gave in and bought Coldplay's first CD, Parachutes. They're a good band, it's a good album, and I've wanted to buy it since it came out.
Why didn't I buy it back when it was first released? Well, you see, there was this guy. There was this guy I went on a couple (maybe 3?) dates with. He was a huuuge Coldplay fan. Nothing wrong with that. There wasn't too much wrong with him, either, except that he was a terrible kisser. Well, wouldn't you know, every time I heard a Coldplay song after that I was reminded of him and his terrible kissing. That CD immediately fell off my "buy" list.
It's been three years since I passed on buying that CD. I figured enough time had passed for me to be able to listen to those songs without cringing. I decided it was time to reclaim the album. So tonight, I put the disc in, and guess what it reminded me of?
Aurgh!

Single Single Saturday 1: Back On The Face of the Earth
Got to hang out with Nadsy tonight. I've gotten to see my friends more this week. I've missed them. You know how it is: People fall off the face of the earth when they start dating someone new. Well, I'm walking the earth once again.
I'm happy to be spending more time with my friends, but sad that I've not seen them as much as I should have and would like to have before this week. That's definitely something to work on for next time.
Single Single Saturday 2: Subsonic!!!
On my drive home tonight, I realized Subsonic was on. I love that show. I've missed that show. Doug hates techno, so blasting Subsonic every Saturday night was out of the question. Tonight, I got to turn it up until I could feel every beat bump through two seatbacks and straight into me. I cruised on 280 with a huuuge grin on my face. I was so into the music I didn't even give chase when a pimped out GTI blew by.
All that bass would not be possible without the subwoofer that would not be in my car if it weren't for Doug, of course. I explored that thought some, thought back a bit, thought forward a bit, and after all that thinking, was happy. Not happy that it's over, but happy that it was, and happy that we came out of it cleanly, and, most importantly, as friends.
Single Single Saturday 3: This Week Only ...
Interruped a rockin' Subsonic set to pick up my stuff from Doug's house. I had a lot less there than I had thought. It was, for the most part, car stuff. Doug's out of town this weekend so I spent some time playing with attention-loving Sprocket. I plopped on the couch, he hopped up, gave me a hug, kneaded some, purred a lot, headbutted me a bit, curled into a semicircle, and shed all over my clothes. The shedding part I can do without, but the rest of it I'll miss. I think if I'm nice I'll get visitation rights, though. ![]()
While in the garage I looked at the workbench and spied an interesting motorcycle part. I think it was a Ninja clutch. I remembered when Doug explained to me how they worked. That was week two. I can still play the clip in my head. I can play a lot of clips from that month in my head. They're nice clips to have.
Loaded up and headed out. Subsonic was still hittin' hard. I felt mellow, though, so I turned it off. As much as I love good bumpin' beats, sometimes I like silence better.

Berkeley Blurb 1: CDs Galore
Went to Berkeley today for lunch. I drove over a bit early to avoid any potential traffic, and wound up with some time to spare. I headed over to Telegraph to do some CD shopping. Now that I have more bass than I know what to do with I want to buy CDs that boom. As I was flipping through bin after bin of bargain CDs I realized how dangerous it would be if I still lived in Berkeley. I'd spend all my money on music! Oh, wait, that's exactly what I did when I first arrived there almost 9 years ago. When I find myself schlepping my 500 CDs around the next time I move, I'll know to curse Amoeba and Rasputin for their good prices.
On a happier music shopping note, I bought 3 CDs (one of them a 2-CD set) for a whopping $6.50. One of my $1 CDs is really good, too.
Berkeley Blurb 2: Stupid Meter Person
Just before my CD adventure, I parked, I tried to feed the meter, I realized the meter was jammed, I banged at the meter, I stuck my Leatherman into the meter, nothing. So, I left a note saying the meter was jammed, there are quarters stuck in it, please go look. I come back and I have a ticket. Why? Because the lazyass meter person didn't even bother to look. I took pictures of the jammed meter. I hope that takes care of the ticket. Lame-O.

Who Can Work To This Stuff?!
My efforts to avoid OutKast's "Hey Ya" at all costs were thwarted just now when I walked into my boss's office and heard it playing on his laptop.
Great, another wonderful song stuck in my head.
I've been very susceptible to ear worms lately.
Ear worms. That term is funny.

Support William Hung!
This guy seems to be everywhere these days. Last week someone IMed me a link to his American Idol audition. I watched, I cringed a little, I chuckled, I felt bad for chuckling. Last night I was watching Inside Edition and they had a little blurb about him. Today, there's an article on him in SF Gate. Found out that there's a web site dedicated to him, too.
It would be so rad if he became an international phenomenon and actually wound up with a career in music. He's trying his best, and he seems to be pretty sincere about it. I wanna say, let's rally behind him and let him live his dream.
Go Will go!

1. I got to watch and listen to the TV at the gym this morning! Hooray for the built-in FM tuner!
2. I got home, decided to load the new Crystal Method CD onto my player, and instead of trying and failing 10 times over the course of 2 hours in a 70% successful attempt at loading the songs, I selected, dragged, dropped, and was done in a minute. Boo ya!

Insomniac Tunes
I hate when I get songs stuck in my head when I'm trying to sleep. It is absolutely impossible for me to sleep with music in my head. Last night I was up for 2 hours trying to fall asleep, the whole time worrying that the stupid song in my head would deprive me of sleep and affect my ability to ride the next morning.
It's worse than that, too. I'll lie there trying to sleep, clicking my teeth against each other in a hybrid tune-beat pattern. I don't want to do it, but I don't know that I'm doing it until I hear it. That can't be good for me.
Damned earworms.

Hanging out in my living room, sorting through my ridiculously tall stack of magazines, listening to Subsonic. It's been sooo long since I've spent any decent amount of time listening to that show. Hey, This Ain't So Bad
I'm listening to my newly purchased CD, Coldplay's "A Rush Of Blood To The Head". I really like their music. I guess I knew that before, but I didn't want to buy their CD because their music is a reminder of a guy I dated a few times who was a total Coldplay fanatic. There was nothing horrifically wrong with him, but I just didn't feel like buying something that would invoke what few memories of him I do have every time I listened to it. Well, today I heard a Coldplay song on the radio and decided it was about time I stopped being stupid about the whole thing and just bought the damned CD. I'm glad I did. 'Tis excellent music! They remind me of a hybrid between U2 and DMB, both bands I quite like.

Tapes? What Are Those?
I was poking around some of the Patton trade sites just now and I realized that everyone's converted to CDs. You don't trade tapes anymore, you trade CDs.
You know how sometimes your parents or their friends will make a comment about how they used to have 8-Tracks and how that makes them feel old? Well, I used to trade tapes, and at the moment that's making me feel old.
On a related note, I went to a random Mike Patton strange music collaboration show in SF back in 1996. I'm pretty sure that my bootleg was the only recording of that show that made it into the trading world. When I see it on people's trade lists it put a little smile on my face. That wouldn't be there if it weren't for me!
And to tie my related note back into the original topic of this post, my little 90 minute audio cassette bootleg has since been converted into a 2 CD set.

It's interesting listening through my old mix CDs. When I play them they bring me back to exactly how I was feeling when they were made. Some make me happy, some make me angry. There was one that made me sad, and then when I got to the last song I burst out laughing.
The song wasn't funny, but I thought I was.

This is going to sound
This is going to sound cheesy, but you know that 80's song with the chorus that goes, "Reunited and it feel so goood"? Well, I was matching socks from my dark load just now and I had one left over. "Drat," I thought, "another pair down." So I put my matched socks in the drawer and threw the single in on the side. It was a little messy so I pulled out the other side contents to organize. Lo and behold, another single sock! A matching single sock, no less. I remembered then that I had had a lone sock the last time I did a dark load, and this was probably it. So anyway, back to that thing about the cheesy 80's song. Um, well, that's when the song popped into my head. I can't believe I just told you that.

Heard the Alice Lounge acoustic version of Matchbox Twenty's "Disease" today. I always sing along to the album version of that song in my car and think I sound terrible, but if they go acoustic, I'm right on. That makes me feel better. Maybe with some good studio equipment I still have a shot at becoming a rock star. ![]()

Stupid Kylie
Just now I was coding away happily, and all of a sudden, I couldn't think. I wasn't quite sure why and I was starting to get annoyed at feeling so muddleheaded. Finally I realized that my usually vocals-free hard house station was playing a dance mix of Kylie Minogue's "Can Get You Out Of My Head". Stupid vocals, messing up my thoughts.
I have to say, the song was quite appropriate.

Debbie Gibson?! Quality Fox Programming, Yes Yes.
Holy crap! I turned on the TV just now and Debbie Gibson was on! Oh, excuse me, Deborah Gibson. She's all grown up now. She looks it, too. Kinda plump in the midsection. She could use some weight training, too. No definition in her arms at all! Come on, Debbie, if you want to be famous again you gotta quit looking like an average middle-aged chick and start looking like a star!
Where did I see her? On American Juniors, which, by the way, is a terrible, terrible show. The kids can't sing, the host tells too many unfunny jokes, and their special guests are 80's has-beens. They just showed a "music video" that I almost mistook for a home video.
Strangely, I can't stop watching. It's kind of like a train wreck.

Went to KFOG Kaboom last night. Yes, I went to a KFOG event; don't laugh. Anyway, there was a ton of people there. Had a big festivally atmosphere. Reminded me of Metropolis in the 3COM parking lot last year. I kept expecting to come across a light show in the crowd. As we got deeper into the crowd I started feeling like I was at a concert. Mosh pits? Where were the mosh pits? No mosh pits to be found. People were civil, for the most part. How strange.

Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park
Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park are on tour together this summer. Awesome, I thought. They're also touring with Metallica. Even more awesome, I thought, because that meant I could leave before the final set and miss the traffic. So today I went to see how much tickets were. 75 bucks. 75 bucks for a concert?! Yup, and that's before the service charge. That's ridiculous. Why so expensive? Must be because of those stupid primadonna money grubbing too old to actually still be cool so they have to tour with bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park puppet of the music industry lameasses in Metallica.
How are the little high school kids going to find 75+ bucks for their tickets?

Time Machine
It's amazing how a song can transport me back in time. I see the sights, smell the smells, feel the feelings. It's so vivid. It's like I'm reliving it.
If you were to name a year I'd have trouble telling you what I was doing then. If, however, you played me a song, I would relive it in my head and from that tell you what year it was.
If there were no music would I have trouble remembering my past?

I looove my new snowboard. I can go waaay faster on this one and not feel like I'm going to crash and die. Oh happy day.
One more week until Meteora comes out!
Today at Safeway the checker recognized my Fantômas shirt. Coooool. He asked me if I'd listened to any of Tomahawk's stuff. But of course, Safeway checker boy, what good Mike Patton fan would not own the Tomahawk album? He seemed sooo happy that someone knew what he was talking about. Well, I guess I'm fairly pleased that after 3 years someone finally recognized my shirt.
My snowboarding injury from last last weekend is not healing very well. Roh.

Hi. It's early. What do people do with themselves at this hour? I'd go to the gym, but I just took a shower. Ooh, but if I go into work, I'll have first dibs on the food ... except that even our office mom doesn't come in this early. Roh.
On a side note, I have the Donkey Kong song from the Atari 7800 game stuck in my head. Well, at least I think I do. Might be 2600. Might not even be Donkey Kong. Maybe it was Ms. Pac Man? Now I'm all confused. Erf.
On a related note to the side note, remember this commercial?
The fun is back, as you can see, the new 2600 from A-TAR-EE.
It's the video system with cartridges galore,
From Space Invaders to cars that roar,
A real hit joystick controls the screen,
Solaris is hot and Midnight Magic's mean,
And one more thing, it's got a special low price,
Under 50 bucks, under 50 bucks?!
Now isn't that nice?

Wow, it's early. It's so
Wow, it's early. It's so early it's later than when I woke up unable to sleep last Thursday morning. I just got back from seeing S.U.N. Project at the DNA Lounge. These guys actually played their set, drums and guitars and all. Electronic rocktrance. It was like going to a rave and a concert all in the same night!
In standard (((THUMP))) Radio event fashion, I met a whole bunch of people. I remembered most of their names, too. It's a new project of mine. There was a Ryan, a Brad, a Greg, a Chad, a Chris, a Michelle, a Jan, a Mark, a Rick, and then two others whose names I kind of remember but not completly. Not too shabby. Next time I'll remember 'em all. Why? 'Cause it's good practice for when I do need to remember names!
Oh, I almost forgot, it's my birthday! Whee! The bouncer at DNA was the first person to wish me a happy birthday after midnight. I handed my ID to him at 12:05. He said, "Happy birthday." I kind of looked at him for a bit before I replied, "Oh yeah!" Haha!
Anyway, I actually started this post to say something that I now realize I said already in this very blog not even two days ago, so I'll just link you to it and let you read it again. Paragraph one. G'nite.

Wanna hear a line that moves me? Spin (or click) up Incubus's "Wish You Were Here" and listen for the line right before the chorus:
And in this moment I am happy.
On good days, that line puts the biggest bestest smile on my face. To realize that you are happy exactly where you are in a particular moment in time to me is one of the best feelings in the world.
On bad days, I think, I want that. When will I have a moment like that again?

Weaning On To The Radio
So the last couple days I've been driving with the radio off because I need to hear exactly what my car is doing in order to drive it. Tonight I had a long freeway drive to and from hockey so I finally got to try out my sound system. Good stuff! The best part is, I forgot and left the radio on after getting off the freeway on my way home. I didn't even realize it until I was a few blocks from my apartment. After an initial split second OMG accompanied by a sudden urge to turn the radio off, I continued on to the smoothly bumpin' beats of Mr. Paul Oakenfold. It stayed on until I was nice and square in my now-not-so-riduculously hilly three point turn carport. Whee!

Ever see a ballerina dance
Ever see a ballerina dance at 180 beats per minute? I did tonight! Take your average ballerina, stick her in a room pumpin' with drums 'n' bass, give her some wacky moves, and watch her bouncy butterfly her way all over the floor.
I've missed going to 550. Tonight was the perfect opportunity for a successful return. Five bucks for breakbeats, drums 'n' bass, and a non-Asian unthuggy crowd of people who were there for, get this, the music.
Got to spin for the first time in a month. I've missed that, too. Played with a displaced raver. Had the usual 2 AM Chuck's donut. I somehow managed to get a hybrid tonight. My supposedly old fashioned chocolate covered donut looked like an old fashioned on top but a cake on the bottom. It even tasted like a hybrid, but that was probably all in my head.
Anyway, it's late and my throat hurts. 'Tis bedtime. Roh.

The Bestest Feeling
Sitting here at the office, almost midnight, streaming some rave tunes through Winamp. I just heard a song that took me back to ... that feeling. For the first time ever, I understand why some people can't pull themselves away. Interesting that I needed the contrast of a late night at the office to understand. Me and the office. Me and Winamp. I close my eyes and feel my brain tingle. I close my eyes and feel the day's stress subside. Just for a few minutes.
I'm glad I can remember how it feels. Worth the brain cells? Yes. Worth the hockey game I blew? Yes, even that.

I just heard the bestest
I just heard the bestest quote from a movie mixed into a song on my favoritest internet hard house station. I'm not sure whether it'd be a quote of the day or a lyrical blip of the day. In any case, here it is:
Attention pussy shoppers! Take advantage of our penny pussy sale! If you buy one piece of pussy at the regular price, you get another piece of pussy of equal or lesser value for only a penny! Try and beat pussy for a penny! If you can find cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper pussy anywhere ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper puss ... cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper cheaper ... cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap cheap ... cheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheacheachea ... fuck it ... !!!
The quote's from From Dusk Till Dawn. I don't think I saw that movie. Maybe I should. Maybe I should try to figure out what that song's called. Maybe I should try to get my very own copy. Maybe I should. Yeah.

Musical Memories
Listening to the mp3 collection on my computer really takes me back. I haven't really added to my collection in the last year, so when I play the songs they bring me back to a year or two ago. I close my eyes and I can still see the people and places and things from that time. I feel something, but I'm not sure what. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel. It strangely reminds me of the dream I had yesterday morning.

Signing for my new place
Signing for my new place today. Woohoo! Couldn't really sleep last night. Boohoo. I woke up after 4 hours and with a Weird Al song stuck in my head. Do you know how painful it is to lie there and hear nothing but Weird Al over and over for a full hour? It's torture!
your butt is wide, well mine is too
just watch your mouth or I'll sit on you
So yeah, I actually got up at 6 today. Just to get those words out of my head. Eventually I got tired and fell over. Phew.
Stopped at this kinda newly opened organic coffee place in Berkeley on my way out this morning. I figured I should try it before I left. I asked for a soy latte and the guy asked me whether I wanted regular or vanilla. Vanilla! 'Twas quite yummy. I should go around and demand that all the other coffee shops out there provide that option too.
I had a couple other things to say but they're kinda general and hopefully somewhat interestingly deep so I'll save them for later when I have more time. Off to sign!

So just now I drove
So just now I drove myself back to Berkeley, got to my block, and kept going. I seem to remember just wanting to drive. The music was good, the lights were pretty, and the fog made everything seem surreal. My brain was buzzin. No, not drunk buzzin. Happy buzzin. I was liking my drive. So I took University Ave to campus and then a left at Oxford. I drove up and up and wound up and up until it ended at Indian Rock Ave. "The Indian Rock Ave?" I wondered. I wanted to find the rocks people went bouldering on. I took a right and drove until Indian Rock Ave turned into some unrocky sounding street. Oops, musta gone the wrong way. Did a U-ey and headed back down. Twenty feet past Oxford, Indian Rock Park [insert heavenly ahh sound here].
I stopped and gazed a bit, then kept going down Indian Rock Ave. I wanted to see how far up from civilization I was. Fifty feet later, Bear Fountain.
I stopped again. This time I laughed. Indian Rock was right next to Bear Fountain?! Here I am, moving in a month, having spent the last two years wondering where Indian Rock was and it's within walking distance from my apartment. Fark!
Oh the music. Oh the lights. Whee.

Okay y'all, back from Cyberfest. Sitting in Ted's kitchen, me and sis and Ted. No Eric, no Jennie, no Matt. Boo. Lights down, music on. Good stuff. We're gonna group blog at ya.
So let's see, the crowd looked ghetto but everyone was friendly for the most part. Even the thuggy looking ones and the drug dealers. Happy smiley reponsive. Oh, I had a new trick, too. I learned this neato thing at Metropolis with a massager. I showed it to everyone. Everyone loved it. No, not loved it. They loooooved it.
Pookie can spin! Damned cool. I don't see her for 5 months and all of a sudden she's a spinning fiend. I think it's a Kam thing. Yeah, we Kams kick ass. Woop!
Oh, Ted can spin too, but you all knew that already. He's the one who taught me! And then I ran off and learned all sort of new things. Hehe.
Pookie has a new friend now. His name is Mario. He was wearing, of all things, a Mario shirt. He's Filipino. He's got a neato Italian Fililpino last name. He's also got way cool ass hair. Pookie's probably never going to see him again. Oh well. Mario was nice.
Pookie got hit on by about, oh, more guys than I can keep track of. She's way good at getting rid of them, too. Pookie's a pLaYa. We all knew that already, right? Yes, we did.
Some bum managed to find his way into the place. He was wandering down the aisle and I saw him so I started jumping up and down in front of him pointing my blinky bikelight at his eyes. He stopped. Then I performed a deft glowstick maneuveur in front of him. He looked dazed. I walked on. So did he. Random, yes, I know.
They took my pacifier. Very sad. No pacifiers allowed, 'cause, like if you have a pacifier you'll want to drop and that's no good. Whoo for ring pops. Whoo for the whistle that Pookie bought me. I whistle with rhythm, I'm told. Coooool.
No devil this time. He was in Vegas. I hope he's richer tonight than when he started yesterday. Go devil go!
Pookie bought some cool ass specs. They do lights for the wearer. Pookie lost the manual and it took us forever to figure out how it worked. Batteries would help.
Ow those things hurt my eyes. I just put them on. Eyeball pain!
Yay for pretzels. Energy for later. Salt, too. Good for the nerves. I think.
Ted met some random people. Some guy named Vincent from Sacramento who invited us to some afterparty at a house. Um, no thanks strange people I don't know. I'd rather go back to Ted's and chill and blog instead. Yeah, blogging's cool. Whoo.
Stomach feels funny. What do I need? More water? No, I've had way too much water tonight. I can feel the stomach sloshing. Slosh slosh.
The bestest part about the time since the rave (yes, 1 hour ago) ... everyone can TALK. We can say and discuss things that normally would be quite unpleasant and/or difficult. I got a lot out of Pookie about the parents. I gotta figure out my life, yo. What to do? Who to be? More like you? Just be me?
Hi, my name is Viv and I used to have a psychiatrist. Serious.
Never blog when you're under the influence. You end up telling your readers things that you don't mean to tell them and even though you know you're doing it you don't care and do it anyway.
Roh.
Ted says, "Cool, dude." I dunno why. What's so cool? Oh, and it's not, "Cool, dude." It's "Cool. Dude." Oh, now it's "Dude. Sweet."
I keep hitting the windows key on this keyboard and triggering some corner menu that take the focus off this textbox. And what a large textbox it is. Wait, is it called a textbox in HTML? I don't remember now. I'm a forgetful geek.
Chomp chomp chomp.
Hey! I can feel the beat in the jungle room now! Kickass!
It was freakin' cold outside tonight. We walked there and waited in line and then kept having to go outside to make phone calls to convince Eric and Jennie and Matt to come, to no avail. Actually I think Matt wanted to come. Siiiiigh. Sorry Matt.
Anyway, yeah, it was freakin' cold and it took us forever to warm up. Brrr ...
Some big black dude with a wizard hat gave me a Starburst. He really liked the light show and massager tricky thingy I did to him. I gave the Starburst to Mario. I think he ate it.
Mario was quite fond of the massager trick thingy. Yay.
Well, reality is setting back in. Not pretty. Talk to you all later.

Something about that annoying song
Something about that annoying song Look At Us makes me want to reach into the radio and choke someone. I'm sorry Sarina Paris, but I must strangle you. It's those damned lyrics of yours. I can't stand them. I don't know why. I must make them stop.

Dude, I'm beat. I'm beat
Dude, I'm beat. I'm beat by the beat. Seriously. Too much hip hop and trance and hip hop and hip hop and Reanimation and band tunes and jam tunes and D&B PA music and D&B Pump It Up music. The body can't move anymore and the ears feel like they're stuffed with cotton. Know what I listened to on the drive home tonight? Classical music. That's right, I tuned my radio to 102.1 and drove home in the 3rd freeway lane going 70 miles per hour. No thumpin' beat and no words to sing. Ahhh ...

I never thought I'd ever hear The Sound of Music to a techno beat.

(((Thump))) ... !!!
So as I excitedly announced in my last post, tonight was (((Thump))) Radio night at 550. Hours and hours of psytrance! No one else wanted to go but it didn't matter. I had my car and my sticks and I was gonna go and spin and play regardless.
I got there early so I could get a good parking spot and get in without freezing my ass off in line. There were only a few people there, but boy were they interesting! I swear some of them looked like comic strip characters. It was still early but they were already dancing. They danced and danced and took up the open floor. None of that standing there looking cool crap. Most of tonight's crowd was there to dance, and they were all dancing sober. Imagine that, they were there for the music, not the substances. Hey let's dance! Hey let's play!
Except the fucking Asians! They wouldn't smile 'cause they had to look cool. Dance? No, forget dancing. They were there to drink and drop and stand there and look cool. Godfuckingdammit, you guys should have gone somewhere else. Took up valuable dancing space and wouldn't even offer a smile in return. Where can I go to get away from you people?
Excuse the rant. They weren't all like that. The ones who smiled back were cool. The few who played with me were super cool. The rest of them can go to hell. Unfriendly vibe-killing bastards.
So anyway, I danced and spun and danced and spun and got to do my thing and not give a million light shows because no one was rolling! WhoO!
It was amazing seeing the bars, too. Empty. The bartenders looked bored. I heard crickets as I walked by. Yeah! Really! Serious!
chirp chirp
Met a bunch of people but now I can remember only a few names. Ron the Israeli guy I had to get rid of. Omar the short guy with the cap who can't spin but dances like a mofo. Cynthia who wanted to get into it and Mike who was too old to. The tall skinny guy with the cool pants and blacklight gloves and day-glo showstrings who was really cool and had a cool name too that I very unfortunately can't remember. The guy who looked like a freak because he had no shirt and a strange glowy skirt and glowy wristbands and a glowy necklace and no shoes and no hair save for a clump at the very top that was in 6" dreaklocks tied up into a tree like thing. He was a freak but he had this 4' long stick with glowy tape on it that he twirled like a baton mofo. Very impressive. Wouldn't touch him with a 4' long stick, though.
Sometimes, I'm afraid to get close to crazy people. I think maybe if I touch them something will rub off on me. I'll become tainted with crazy person. Wow, that makes no sense. Perhaps I'm crazy myself?
I pulled out my photons and danced Shay style and people whooped for me 'cause Shay trance dances cool. I also managed to cut myself doing so and not realize it and for the longest time couldn't figure out why I had blood all over my hands.
Anyway, my sticks got dim and my arms got tired and I was sick of bumping into Ron so I decided to call it a night. But damn I was hungry! What to eat?
A Sourdough Jack! Mmm! Jack in the Box is sooooo fresh at 2:30 AM. The bread was soft and crispy, the cheese perfectly melted. The fries ... oh the fries! So good!
Trance and dance and lights and a Sourdough Jack. I'm happy. ![]()

I'm back! I'm back!
I'm back! I'm back! No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth. I've just been too busy and too tired to blog. There's so much to blog about, too. Or so it seemed. I guess we'll find out ...
So the reason I've been too tired to blog is I went to bed at 6 AM three nights in a row. Not a bad thing. Well, not a bad thing except for my health and my sleep cycle and my productivity and my blog.
Hey, I'm listening to a new CD. Tomahawk. One of Mike Patton's new bands. Can't believe it took me 7 months to pick it up. Next up is one of his other new projects, Lovage. Oh, and I just picked up Eminem's new album. So much music!
Okay, back to the weekend recap ...
Drove down to LA on Saturday and went to 31 Flaverz, a small rave in an old theatre somewhere in the unfashionable fashion district of LA. I had my gloves and my sticks and Ted bought me a pair of spectra glasses so light-wise I was all set. I spun some and then headed toward the back where they had blacklights up to play with my gloves. Wanted to try out my glove shows on people. They like me, they really like me! My arms were hurting after about the 15th show. Sober arms need rest!
The highlight of Saturday night was this happy little 19 year old boy who came up to me a few minutes after I gave him and glove show. He thank-you-thank-you-!-ed me again and said emphatically, "You're sooooo cuuuuute!" Yeeeah! 19 year olds dig me. So what if it's chemically induced?
Left at 4 AM to try to get some rest. Sunup around 5:30. Bedtime at 6.
8:30 AM Sunday. Time to get up and drive to Vegas. Yawwwwwn ...
Got into Vegas in time for the Kings-Laker game. What a game. I thought the Kings had it. I really did. But damn, what a comeback. What a shot. I was watching the game in a casino with a bunch of Lakers fans. The final seconds of the game seem so surreal to me now. I remember Kobe driving, missing, relief, Shaq rebounding, missing, relief, Vlade whacking the ball out, Horry picking it up, shooting ... I shouted, "Noooooooooo!" ... swish ... and everywhere around me people started jumping up and down in celebration.
Crazy freakin' Lakers fans.
Speaking of which, I want either a Lakers-Celtics series or a Kings-Nets series in the final. In any case, I want a west coast team to win it all. Sorry to everyone back home, but I was never a Celtics fan anyway. At least I'm not a Knicks fan anymore.
Needed a nap after all the basketball excitement. Rested a couple hours at the hotel and headed out to eat and drink and gamble. Well, I guess I headed out to eat. Didn't drink much. Didn't gamble much either. It was cool just to take it all in. It'd been 10 years since my last Vegas trip. All I can say is, either I've forgotten a lot then or they've built a lot since then. That place is pretty!
Okay, so not drinking and not gambling (okay I did gamble a bit but after a while it was gambling to wait for people and that only made me lose money so I stopped) got old after a little while. That and it was 4 AM so I was starting to get tired. Fortunately we headed to Mandalay Bay around that time. They were blaring trance at the House of Blues there. I ditched everyone and hung out by the speakers outside the place, pulled out my lights, and did my thing. The security guards looked at me kind of funny. I thought they were going to throw me out for trying to turn their casino into a rave. Then the strangest thing happened. People leaving the club started coming up to me to ask me for light shows and to show them how to spin. That and I got smiles from pretty casino boys. Yay for me. Yay for lights. Yay for non-casinolike behavior in the middle of a casino.
Okay tired drunken people, the sun's up so it's time to get some sleep. What time is it? 6 AM? Not again ...
Got up at noon to go eat and gamble some more. I played some and lost some, played some and won some, played some and lost some more. Down 50 bucks. Entertainment fees. Cheaper than a night out. Cheaper than a rave. Drugs are expensive, you know.
Kidding! But speaking of expensive, so is alcohol. You know where all my CD money comes from? It's the alcohol fund that doesn't get spent. Hooray for whatever gene it is that's responsible for my being pathetically unable to consume more than one drink over the course of an entire night.
7 PM. Time to head back to LA. Thank you HT for driving. I got an hour or so of much needed sleep. No thank you Wayney Thai for freaking me out with stories about cabinfuls of dead people falling from the sky. Thank you Christina for taking us to the store with the product labels that make no sense.
Snoopy on a glass bottle with liquid inside. The label on the box says it's a bottle of BOTTY COLON. Mmm! That sure makes me want to dab the stuff all over me.
1 AM. Leave LA for home. Good thing for the little nap earlier. Thank you Wayney Thai for driving the second leg of the trip. Thank you also for not telling me any more freaky dead people stories.
That's freaky as in scary, not grindy. Dead people freakin' would be gross.
5:30 AM. Where are my sunglasses?
6 AM. Schleepballtime!
And now you know why I'm dead tired and couldn't blog for 2 days. I guess it's been more like 4 days for you. Or 5. Or however many days it's been since I last wrote. Anyway, it's good to be back. I plan on retiring early the entire weekend. Bedtime at 6 PM!

Transvestites! WhoO!
So last night was Ted's birthday shindig. Well, I don't know if shindig is the word for it. If shindig is what you label a night of transvestites and drunkenness, then last night would have been a marvellous one.
Transvestites? Yup! We started off the night with dinner at AsiaSF, a restaurant nightclub kinda place in the city.
No No, They're Gender Illusionists
Hang on, let me correct myself. They were not transvestites. They were gender illusionists. Transvestites would have been men in women's clothing. What we saw were men who were more beautiful than most women you'd meet on the street. Take, for example, our server, Tara. Tara had glamourous hair, a beautiful complexion, boobs that had me screaming "It's not fair!", and one of the best supermodel struts I'd ever seen. It wasn't until Tara opened her (his?) mouth that I realized she (he?) was really a man.
We got drinks, we got food, we got a couple damned good shows. The owner stopped by and bought Ted a drink. He offered me one too for arranging everything but I was driving so I asked for a bowlful of cherries instead. Love them marischinos. I'm getting pretty good at tying the stems into knots with my tongue. Something of a UberVivo side project.
I Have No Money Left But At Least I've Got My Sticks!
Finished up, paid our $740 bill (yikes!) and headed over to 550 Barneveld to drink some more. Oh, and something about dancing, too. I wouldn't know 'cause I ditched the drunk people to go play with my glowsticks. It was amazing. I broke out the sticks and all of a sudden all the people with sticks and lights started clustering. We had a little light show circle going in no time.
Do I Know You?
Then strange stuff happened. People I didn't know started coming up to me and saying, "Hey, you were at Blue Moon, weren't you?" Blue Moon is that rave I went to at the end of last month. Apparently I had given a few of them light shows and met them. Met them as in met them. "What's your name?" I asked this one guy. "Ben," he said. "What?" "Ben." Something in my head clicked. I'd done this exchange before. "I did the exact same thing at Blue Moon, didn't I?" "Yup."
It was cool, though. They remembered me for my light shows. As Ted put it, I've got a fan base. A freakin' fan base! That kicks so much ass.
I'm A Glowsticking SoopahStaaaaah!
I even got to spin on stage. I wasn't going to but people there were like, "Go up there! It's your time to shine!" The performance junkie in me couldn't pass it up. Best part was, the moment I got up there the DJ started spinning Sandstorm. I looooove that song. So I let it loose and gave a show. I think I had the crowd going too. Kickass! Kickass kickass kickass!
Buncha Freakin' Drunks!
Got some water, took a break, chatted a bit, found my friends, got instantly pulled into their drunken freak chain. Hi, nice to see you all too! Okay okay, my legs are getting tired. I wanna go spin my sticks some more!
Spin spin ... music stopped. The PO-lice were shutting us down. Some idiots outside got in a fight and someone got stabbed. Poopie.
More Random People From The Past
Afterward I was walking around outside the club spinning my sticks. I heard someone shout, "Hey! I did karaoke with you!" I looked up and who did I see but that random rapper guy from karaoke in LA a couple weekends ago. Turned out he lives up here in the Bay Area. I even got his name this time around. Alex. Huh!
Wrapped up after that. There were plans to go hang out at someone's house afterward but the drunk ones needed to pass out and the sober ones needed sleep. The birthday boy was happy so my mission was accomplished. Got in, took a shower, ran through all the newly rediscovered strangers in my life, and went to bed. Goooood night everybody!

Then everyone else can just disappear.
Okay, I take that back. Not everyone everyone.

Went to see Green Day,
Went to see Green Day, Blink 182, and Jimmy Eat World at the Oakland Arena tonight. My first true rock concert in a while. General admission, no less. A couple years ago I was saying I had outgrown general ad at rock shows. These days I guess I'm trying to be young again.
Diana and I did a pretty darned good job of that! She and I started a mosh pit during the Green Day set. Bounce bounce ... push push ... SHOVE!! Funny how when girls start a pit other girls who won't join the other pits decide to join in. I bet we were the only girl pit of the evening. All the other ones were full of big crazy guys. Our was full of girls who didn't want to get trampled by the guys. Well, girls and then Ted, who claims he didn't mean to be in it and was trying to get out. Yeah, right!
So Green Day was a great set, as I'm sure Diana will attest to. Blink 182 closed off the show. I stayed in back for their set 'cause I was sick of all the pushing and shoving up front. A very good decision, I must say. I had so much room to dance! I bounced and spun all over the place. Plenty of room to express myself. That's more like it!
And now for the post concert bruise report. I have 11 new bruises on my left forearm, 5 on my right. I forgot to give you the rave bruise report from Friday. I got about 11 on my right knee, 5 on my left knee. But you know what's funny? At concerts I jump and dance with my legs a lot but bruise my arms. At raves I glowstick all night with my arms and somehow bruise my knees. I don't get it. In any case, I currently have 32 bruises on my forearms and knees. That's not counting the many random bruises I always have elsewhere. 32+ bruises! A new record for me!

Super Duper Slide Show
Last night I put on some music, closed my eyes, and let my brain do its thing. It felt good to give it a break from all the real time real life crap it has to process throughout the day. It was nice to just let go and watch it flip through scenes from Saturday night. Hooray for memory, whatever it is.

Stepping Out of the Movie
I think going to raves helps me appreciate the world around me more. Afterwards I enjoy the music a little more and feel the beat a little better. I marvel at lights and even start to like bright blinky things near my eyes. Normally when people flash lights in my eyes I get annoyed and want to swipe at them.
And then there's the change in how I view my surroundings. Like today at the gym I was listening to John Digweed and I went to sit down for a break between sets. All of a sudden I wasn't in the weight room anymore. I mean, I was physically there, but mentally it felt like I was just an observer. It was like watching a movie. Watching people walking around, doing their sets, running their runs, all to a trancey dancey soundtrack.
Not a bad soundtrack for life. For the time being, at least.

The Snowboard Report
Yup, I went back up to the mountains again last weekend. Not just to Tahoe this time, but over to Mammoth as well, with a couple pit stops at the casinos to and fro. Here's the wrapup:
Sun and Snow and People-Eating Trees
Went to the usual resort to snowboard Saturday. It had dumped a couple feet of snow and then cleared up so the conditions kicked ass. I finally decided to go off into the trees and play. Bad idea! I got stuck in a 2-3 foot deep pile of fluff by the base of a tree. Can't jump out when your board has a big ole pile of snow on top of it! What a workout that was, trying to get out. But oh it was so fluffy! So nice! Definitely worth the sunburn I got that day.
Corn Fritters
Corn fritters for dinner. Yum.
Karaoke SoopahStah
After dinner we stopped by Harrah's for some craps and blackjack. They had some karaoke / raffle event going on right by the blackjack tables. I flipped through their songbook to see what they had and lo and behold I saw a listing for Longview. Yes, Longview, that Green Day song about masturbation. Yes, I signed myself up to so sing it on stage in front of a bunch of strangers.
Nervous nervous nervous. A few more people went up and sang. They just kind of stood there and sang the lyrics on the screen. Some good, some bad, all kinda boring. Then the DJ said, "Next up we have ... Viv?" Showtime! I forgot about being nervous and hopped up on stage, still in full snowboard attire. The music started and I belted out the song, making faces and jumping up and down and all around. The DJ scrambled to blank out all the bad words I was screaming and the crowd cheered as I did my crazy monkey act on stage. I've never had that much fun singing anything in my life.
For the rest of the night, random Harrah's employees kept coming up to me and saying things like, "Hey, weren't you the one up there on stage? Nice show!" It was good knowing that I wasn't the only who had a good time with that song.
Yay!
She's A Snowboarder!
At the end of the karaoke / raffle event they were giving away hats and mugs and shirts and a ski lift ticket to Heavenly. I didn't care much for the wearables but I really wanted to win the lift ticket, which turned out to be their final raffle prize. Oh please oh please oh please pick me pick me pick me ... the next thing I knew I heard the announcer read my name off the ticket. I raised my arms and started bouncing. But the cool part was, when the crowd saw that it was me they all cheered. Yay for me! Yay for me!
So then in typical announcer fashion the guy on the mic said, "She's going skiing tomorrow!" at which point someone in the back yelled, "She's a SNOWBOARDER!" Yeah, man, couldn't you tell? I was bouncing around in baggy snowboard pants and a smirking Calvin T-shirt singing a Green Day song about masturbation. Puh-leease!
To Mammoth!
3 hours of driving after Harrah's to get to Mammoth Mountain ...
Holy Shit We're Gonna Die!
When we first got to Mammoth on Sunday it was cold and snowy and windy and foggy. Oh, and did I mention it was windy? No, wait, not windy ... WINDY. That plus all the other elements meant we had 5 feet of visibility at the top of the lift. That is, if we didn't get blown off the lift on the way up. You know it's bad when your board gets blown vertical as you're going up the mountain.
Lucky us, we boarded off the lift instead of falling off. Now for the hard part. We didn't know the mountain and we couldn't see what was ahead of us. The first 5 minutes consisted of 6 people shouting to each other, "Do you know this run?" / "No!" / "Oh SHIT!" But we were lucky once again and managed to make it down without falling off a cliff or running into any large solid objects. Phew!
Hooray For Sun
After a couple hours it cleared up and it was absolutely beautiful. I even got to ride in fresh powder. Sooooo nice. I never understood what people meant but now I do. And I want more of it. That stuff feels sooooo good ...
Hooray For Car Naps
I had to get some work done so I sat in the passenger seat with my laptop the whole way home. I started getting sleepy and closed my eyes for a bit. It was sooooo nice just sitting there feeling and hearing the car and the road and sensing the lights though my eyelids. I don't think I actually slept because I was so busy feeling the ride. Forget driving to Tahoe every weekend! I'm gonna be a passenger from now on!
