Five Reasons Why I Blog
I got tagged by Melsybo. Hello, Bo sister!
1. Because Patling told me to, late one night almost 6 years ago.
2. Online memory bank. Hooray for search!
3. Because all the cool kids do it. I want to be just like them!
4. Write once, view anywhere. Better coverage and less intrusive than e-mails.
5. Because sometimes I just need to blah blah blah blah blah ...

Oh Yes Indeed, It's Meme Time
You can thank Liz.
I really don't like the number four. Let's do three.
Three jobs I've had:
- Retail something or other at Recordtown, a Sam Goody-esque music chain store at the local mall. What a ripoff that place was. Even after the employee discount, it was cheaper to shop at used CD stores.
- Retail something or other behind the electronics counter of a big gift shop in SF's Chinatown. I got to use my six years of French on all of two people. That was almost as good as the lady who approached me oh-so-cautiously, finally daring to ask, as slowly and as clearly as she could manage, "Do you speak English?"
- Research something or other in a lab at Berkeley. It wasn't so much a job as it was a really good learning experience. I truly enjoyed my time there, but I also learned that research wasn't for me.
Three movies I've seen more than once:
Gosh, this is a tough one. I try not to see movies more than once, and even if I do, it's by accident, and I don't remember the titles anyway, which is probably what caused me to see the movie twice in the first place. Let's see ...
- Return of the Jedi. I know that I saw it when it first came out because my dad keeps telling me I made Ewok noises all the way to the car afterward. I saw it again when they re-released it.
- The Terminator. I have an image of a bare Terminator butt seared into my head from seeing the movie as a small child, and I know I've seen the movie since.
- Bruce Almighty. I TiVoed it over Christmas weekend, and realized at the end of the movie that I'd already seen it.
Three places I've lived:
- Hong Kong, before it was returned to China. My mom tells me I was allergic to the air there.
- Quincy, MA, grades 1-12.
- Berkeley, CA, for undergrad, and for 3 years after that.
After that, I've just hopped from Bay Area city to Bay Area city.
Three TV shows I've seen more than one episode of:
- Inspector Gadget. I hated that show, but I couldn't stop watching it. I guess I kept coming back in hopes of seeing Inspector Gadget die. Darnit, Penny, stop saving his clueless ass!
- The X-Files. David Duchovny, why don't you love me? Just kidding. He was cute, but I watched the show for its strange (though sometimes inaccurate) scienceyness.
- The Ultimate Fighter. I hate reality TV, but I get sucked in when it involves people hitting each other. Kind of strange, considering I've never taken a swing at anyone in my life. Nor do I intend to.
Three places I've been on vacation:
- Disney World. I don't remember how old I was, but I know we went. And that we did so much walking our feet hurt.
- New Orleans, LA. It smelled bad before it ever flooded. I don't want to know what it smells like now.
- Aspen, CO. Swish!
My excuse for not including Hawaii is that I went with my family, and by then I was old enough to be completely stressed out by the entire trip.
Three favorite foods:
- Ice cream. In particular, mango, coconut, or chocolate-with-chunks-of-yummy-stuff-mixed-in.
- Fresh, crispy, thin crust cheese pizza. Think Papa Gino's, before they started to suck.
- Whatever I happen to be craving at the moment. Too many in the running to choose.
Three places I'd rather be:
In the grand scheme of things, I don't mind being where I am now.
Six CDs I listened to most recently:
Six, to make up for the list I just skipped.
- Foo Fighters - In Your Honor. It's on my mp3 player, which I listened to at the gym earlier today.
- Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel. Also on my mp3 player.
- The Gorillaz - Demon Days. Love it.
- Beck - Guero. Was displaced only by the Gorillaz CD.
- Keoki. Several CDs, actually. I've got a bunch of his albums on an mp3 CD for the car.
- The Killers. I have no idea what their album is called, but I can't stop listening to that song with the stupid line that repeats, "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier." Please save me.
Speaking of music, the title of this post should be spoken like that line in Sure Shot.
Last three vehicles I’ve owned:
- Weeble, a 1996 Suzuki GS500E. Named Weeble because I got it after ...
- Flopsie, a 1994 Kawasaki ZX-6E. You can take a wild guess as to why we named it that.
- A 2003 Volkswagen GTI VR6 24v. I don't name my cars. I also don't assign genders to them. The guy at the dealership asked me if my car was a boy or a girl when I went to pick it up, and I looked at him like he was crazy.
Things in my life that come in threes:
:-/
Everything seems to come in ones, twos, and fours.

The Friday Five
1. What was your first job?
Recordtown. I started in November (maaaybe December) of 1993. It was an overpriced music chain store in a mall. I used to go shopping at local used record stores before going into work. It made for an interesting bag search at the end of the night. Yeah, they searched employee bags. Lame.
How much did you make?
Minimum wage: $4.25. I used the money to pay for indoor tennis lessons during the snowy Boston winter.
3. Describe your least favorite co-worker of all time.
I have a poor memory, so this may not truly be "of all time", but the Cube Contaminator would definitely rate toward the bottom of the favorite scale.
4. What is your dream job?
I want to be an amateur everything athlete, and get paid handsomely for it. I don't think my wrists (or body, for that matter) would hold up, though.
5. What do you currently do and do you like it?
I write software. Like it? No, I hate computers. I stay as far away from them as I can. Isn't that obvious?
You can find The Friday Five here.

Because Cheddah is sick of reading about the Le Snack game, and because my computer is busy ...
- What is your occupation?
Applications developer. - What color is your underwear?
Purple. - What are you listening to right now?
The sound of my typing, the ventilation system, and something cyclic, though I'm not sure what. - What was the last thing you ate?

If I see a shooting one, yes, but I always throw a gazillion wishes at it 'cause i can't make up my mind. - If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Inch worm. I don't actually know what that looks like, but I dig the name. - How is the weather right now?
Partly cloudy, and I'll wager it's windy as hell, since I'm in SSF. - Last person you spoke to on the phone?
Dad, I think. :) - Do you like the person who sent this to you?
No one sent this to me, thank goodness. I hate spam. - How old are you today?
I'm 27.59 years old. - Favorite drink?
Don't really have one. Water's a good staple. I dig Peet's Mocha Freddos. Love Jamba Juices. Mango boba, often sans boba. Soy lattes are good too. That answer didn't go so well, did it? - Favorite sport to watch?
Football, although fighting sports are fun to watch too. - Have you ever dyed your hair?
Who wants to know? - Do you wear contacts or glasses?
Contacts from 5 minutes after I get up to 15 minutes before I go to bed. Then I switch to glasses. - Pets?
The schedule doesn't allow for pets, unfortunately. - Favorite month?

I don't remember. That one that I rented, whatever it was called. - Favorite day of the year?

Depends on whom. - Cherry or Blueberry?
Cherry. - Do you want your friends to blog you back?
Yesh. - Who is most likely to respond?
Why is this question on every single useless list of questions I bother to fill out? What, are we all expected to be able to see into the future or something?? - Who is least likely to respond?
>:-O - Who do you live with?
My aunt, sort of, and a bunch of spiders. I used to live with mice, too, but I think the spiders scared the mice away. - When was the last time you cried?
I can't remember, although it couldn't have been too long ago. Everything makes me cry. I'm surprised this useless list of questions hasn't made me cry yet. - What is on the floor of your closet?
Spiders, probably. - Who is the friend you have had the longest?
Uhh ... my memory is worse than my ability to choose favorites. I don't even know whether to think back to elementary or middle school. - What did you do last night?
I'm not answering that here. - Favorite smell?
No more favorites questions! - What inspires you most?
Hey! That's a favorites question in disguise! - What are you afraid of?
I'd say spiders, but I think I'm getting used to them. - Plain, cheese or spicy hamburgers?

Why I oughta ... !
Did anyone actually read all that?

Friday Fiver
1. Who do you owe?
The government, for my last remaining school loan. I should just pay that thing off so I don't have to think about it.
I don't think I owe anyone any money. I'm generally really good about paying people back in a timely fashion. That said, if I owe you money, speak up! I'll pay you back immediately!
I do owe my former teammate a pair of socks she lent me last season. I keep forgetting to bring them with me to the rink. At this point I probably owe her interest on them.
2. Does anyone owe you?
Yes. I think I've rarred about this in the past, probably in Andrea's blog comments.
By "this" I mean the general lack of concern some people have for repaying those who have been kind enough to lend them money.
3. How many credit cards to you have?
More than I keep in my wallet.
4. Do you care about national debt?
Nope, though I probably should.
5. Would your friends be surprised if they accidently saw the balance in your checkbook?
Yes, and I would be too, because I do all my banking online.
You can find the Friday Fiver here.

Thursday Threesome
Someone at work just wished someone else a good weekend. I started to get excited because I thought it was Friday. I figured I'd do a Friday Fiver to celebrate.
But then the Friday Fiver loaded and I couldn't find any new questions.
Boo, it's only Thursday.
Not to be deterred, I found a Thursday Threesome to do instead.
Onesome - I'll be - What did you want to grow up to be when you were a child? If you aren't fulfilling your childhood dream, what made you change it?
I wanted to be an astronomer. I used to go to the library across the street and borrow books with pretty pictures of planets in them. The funny thing is, I was scared to death of the night sky. Something about the moon and the stars totally freaked me out. I'd run from the car into the house with my head down if we were out 'til dark. Then, when I got into the house, I'd run from window to window and pull down the shades, all while looking at nothing but the dark floor. Strange that I never thought to turn a light on during those panicked window runs.
The dream never changed; it just quietly faded away.
Twosome - Your shoulder - Who's your confidant? Who do you run to when you need emotional support?
My shoulder is sore, I don't have a confidant, and I don't run to anyone for emotional support. PT was no help, no one knows my deepest darkest secrets, and running hurts my knees -- I prefer to skate.
Threesome - When you cry - What makes you cry? The scent of flowers? Allergies? Or are you just super-sensitive to that sad song you always seem to hear on the radio lately?
Everything makes me cry. Movies, concussions, anger, onions, happy things, sad things, yawning, even my boss leaving the country. What *doesn't* make me cry?
Waah.

Blah
Sleeping didn't help. Woke up still feeling blah.
I don't normally answer these, but apparently I'm in an answer-waste-of-time-questions sort of funk.
- First name: Viv
- Were you named after anyone? Some actress, I'm told. That's all I know.
- Do you wish on stars? Nope.
- When did you last cry? I think sometime this week, but I'm not sure.
- Do you like your handwriting? What handwriting?
- What is your favorite lunch meat? Does tuna count? I don't really like traditional lunchmeants.
- What is your birth date? Dec 15, 1977.
- What is your most embarrassing CD? I think I might have an *NSYNC album. I'm embarrassed that I looked up the proper way to spell *NSYNC.
- If you were another person, would YOU be friends with you? Yup, and we'd have a blast.
- Are you a daredevil? I don't think I am, but I think it's all a matter of perception.
- Have you ever told a secret you swore not to tell? Not that I can rememeber. Ha, I sound like I'm in a courtroom.
- Do looks matter? Matters for what? In most cases, yes, for one reason or another.
- How do you release anger? Depends on what/who makes me angry, and where I am at the time. In my car, by stepping on the gas and being a jerk. In a game, by playing harder. With most people, I repress it (baaad, I know). With a few people, I talk about it.
- Where is your second home? The ice rink!
- Do you trust others easily? Depends on the person, but yes, I think I generally do, and I don't like that.
- What was your favorite toy as a child? Maybe my bike, maybe my Transformers, maybe my Lego Technic set. I have trouble deciding on a favorite. Too absolute.
- What classes in high school do you think were totally useless? History. I can't remember anything from history class.
- Do you have a journal? I have a blog, a somewhat ill-maintained otherblog, a recently-discontinued exercise blog, a now-defunct rhymeblog, and I'm currently scribbling in journal number 15 or so.
- Do you use sarcasm a lot? Less now than I used to, I think.
- What are your nicknames? Too many to list them all! Here are some current ones: Vivo, Vivybo, Vivlet, Rivlet, SoopahViv, DarthVivo. And some old ones: Vivikeen, Combhead, Metalhead, Psycho. Wow, I feel like I've come so far.
- Would you bungee jump? Yes. I've always wanted to.
- Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Depends on the shoe. Sneakers, yes, because they're always on tight.
- Do you think that you are strong? Yes, compared to some people, but I'm not as strong as I'd like to be, mentally, emotionally, and physically. That said, I set high standards for myself, and I'll probably never be as strong as I'd like to be.
- Favorite ice cream? Mango Häagen Dazs, or maybe a Black Forest Dream from Cold Stone.
- Shoe Size? 8/8.5. Skate size: 4
- Red/pink? Red, of course!
- What is your least favorite thing about yourself? Currently, this damned funk that I'm in. That's just a copout answer for something I won't state in this forum.
- Who do you miss most? I'll copout of this one without even a bogus answer.
- Do you want everyone you send this to send it back? N/A
- What color pants and shoes are you wearing? Olive green pants. Powder blue and white sandals.
- What are you listening to right now? Copping out yet again. Blame the funk.
- Last thing you ate? A Butterfinger-chen, I think. Haven't yet eaten today.
- If you were a crayon, what color would you be? I'm not a crayon, nor do I want to be. I break crayons for fun.
- What is the weather like right now? It's sunny here today.
- Last person you talked to on the phone? Huh, funny. Doug called 2 questions ago, so I just got off the phone with him.
- The first thing you notice about the opposite sex? Probably their face, followed by how fit they are.
- Do you like the person who sent this to you? Yesh.
- Favorite drinks? Diet Mountain Dew. I don't really drink alcohol, although if I had to name an alcoholic beverage I liked, I'd say a mojito.
- Favorite sport? Hockeeey!
- Hair color? Black.
- Eye color? Dark dark brown.
- Do you wear contacts? Yup.
- Favorite food? Don't have a favorite. I'm fond of Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, BBQ, baked goods ...
- Last movie you watched? Shaun of the Dead.
- Favorite day of the year? Dunno, but certainly not today.
- Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings.
- Summer or winter? Both? Summer 'cause I like warm weather, winter 'cause I like snowboarding.
- Hugs of kisses? Hugs, but even better are hugs AND kisses.
- What is your favorite dessert? Ice cream? Quit asking favorites questions!
- Who is most likely to respond? I dunno, maybe someone will comment.
- Who is least likely not to respond? Isn't that the same question, phrased confusingly?
- What book are you reading? Uh ... I don't read books.
- What's on your mouse pad? Nothing, it's one of those boring grey ergo ones.
- What did you watch last night? I don't watch TV.
- Favorite smells? Now officially protesting favorites questions!
- Rolling Stones or Beatles? Linkin Park and Crystal Method.
- Do you believe in Evolution or Creation? Evolution, but even that blows my mind sometimes.
- What's the furthest you've been from home? What's home in my head? How philosophical. How about I answer the fArthest I've been from home? Hong Kong.
There.

Kimmy Sent Me Something To Waste My Time On. Thanks Kimmy.
1. What color are your kitchen plates? Off-white with a forest green ring on the outside.
2. What are you reading now? Eating Naked. It's a bunch of short stories. Go click the link on the right.
3. What's on your mouse pad? I have 2 mice and no pad at home. At work I have a grey mouse pad with a gel wrist rest.
4. Favorite board game? Monopoly because it's so mindless. What, were you expecting me to say chess or something. Actually, I don't know how to play chess. Now you probably all think I'm dumb.
5. Favorite magazine? Probably Wired. I'm such a gadget and technology fiend. My more gadgeted and techie friends are probably reading this and laughing at me.
6. Favorite smell? Piiie! No, chocolate! No, fresh baked bread! Hrmm, I sense a pattern here.
7. Least favorite smell? Ammonia. I'd rather sniff shit. Okay, that was unnecessarily crass. I'm sorry.
8. The first thing you think of when you wake up in morning? Mmm ... warm.
9. Favorite color? Red, blue, maybe yellow. Whatever it is, it has to be vibrant.
10. Least favorite color? Brown. Ick.
11. How many rings before you answer the phone? Depends on whether my coworkers start singing along before I hit the button.
12. Future child's name? Kids? Eeek!
13. What is most important? Be happy. Make others happy if you can too, and don't hurt anyone along the way.
14. Chocolate or vanilla? Mmm ... chocolate.
15. Do you like to drive fast? Too fast.
16. Do you sleep with a stuffed animal? No but I have a blankie, and on nights when I don't have my blankie I have a Doug, which is even better.
17. Storms - cool or scary? What kind of storm?
18. What type was your first car? First car that wasn't mine: 1988 BMW 325 that I almost totalled. First car that was mine: 1999 Honda Civic LX that got totalled by someone else.
19. If you could meet one person dead or alive who would it be? Eh, never thought about it. I don't really care to meet anyone in particular.
20. Favorite alcoholic drink? Alcohol, blech!
21. What is your sign and birthday? I'm a Sag and at this moment I'm feeling too irrationally paranoid to post my birthday online. Why do you want to know, anyway?
22. Do you eat the stems of broccoli? Mmm ... broccoli stems. Crunch!
23. If you could have any job what would it be? Professional amateur everything athlete.
24. If you could have any color hair, what would it be? Um, wouldn't I look funny with anything other than dark dark brown? I'm Chinese, after all. I had purple hair for a bit and I was told later that I looked like a freak.
25. Is the glass half full or half empty? Full of what? Hrmm, I'm kinda thirsty.
26. Favorite movie? Used to be Fight Club for the rubber glove scene (that's the chapter entitled "Sport Fucking", for those of you who are interested). Now, I dunno. Why do I need to have a favorite anyway?
27. Do you type with your fingers on the right keys? I think I do but I never took a typing class so I don't know. Everything seems to be in reach. I type fast; does that mean I'm typing properly?
30. Favorite sport to watch? On TV: NFL (used to be tennis, ha!). In person: NHL.
31. What is your single biggest fear? Off the top of my head, I really don't know. I have a lot of little irrational fears, but one big one? I couldn't say. I'm afraid of heights, but I'm working on that one. I used to be afraid of having to talk and/or sing in front of people, but I'm over that one. I used to be afraid to order at McDonald's, but I'm way over that one now (gotta have my McFlurries, after all!). Water, I suppose. I tried to learn to float and swim and I still haven't succeeded. Death, maybe, but it'd be more a fear of how that will happen rather than death itself. I think when I die the lights will just go out, and if not, well, won't that be fun.
32. Say one nice thing about the person who sent this to you. "Kimmy Kimball saw a naked man drive down the street!" I've always wanted to blog that. Laura W-lty announced it in the lunchroom in middle school. I don't know why but I can still hear it in my head.
33. Person most likely to respond? Respond? Hey! Someone meme this!
34. Person you sent this to who is least likely to respond? How about a reader who doesn't have a blog? Melsybo.
35. Favorite CD? Currently, Linkin Park's Meteora.
36. Favorite TV show? SportsCenter! Always.

39. Favorite soft drink? Diet Mountain Dew! WhoO!
40. The best place you have been? In bed, warm, cuddling, and happy.
41. What screen saver is on your computer right now? Home computer: tumbling 3D text that reads "Wooha!" Work computer: blank screen.
42. Burger King or McDonald's? How about In-N-Out? Carl's Jr. is a close runner up.
42? Why 42? That's an unlucky number!
43. Favorite number? Um, er, uh, anything that doesn't contain any combination of numbers that phonetically sounds like death in Cantonese.
Phew.
