It's Called Laziness

People think I'm growing my hair out, but really, I've just been lazy. I don't think I've done anything to my hair since summer of last year, when it was chin length and purple.

Since then, my hair has grown another 10 inches, and the purple has faded back to blond. It's finally long enough to tangle again, which drives me nuts, and will ultimately cause me to cut it down some.

I still wear pigtails now and then, but the ponytail has definitely made a comeback. Again, laziness.

If it weren't for that laziness, however, I wouldn't be able to present to you the following picture. This is me, this morning, with a massive case of curly hair bedhead:

Bedhead

I feel like I should be in a shampoo ad.

Yesterday, I let one of my coworkers borrow my work badge for a few minutes. When he returned, he pointed at the person with the short blond hair on my badge.

R: Who is this?
V: That's me, three years ago.
R: Really?!
V: Really. I had a red mohawk prior to that.
R: Why would you do such a thing?
V: Why not? Hair grows back. :)
R: You are so weird.

I forgot to thank him.

Hair Update

I was just reminded that I'm falling behind on hair documentation. Time to get caught up!

1. Back in May, I wore my red hair in pigtails, which my parents hated:

Me & Bobo

2. Here's the purple I blogged briefly about at the beginning of June:

Me & Yosh

3. It quickly faded into ickyness and I wore it in icky faded pigtails for a while:

Yogurt Park!

4. Two weeks ago, cut and dyed dark purple. I actually look somewhat normal:

Me At Old Faithful

Normal for me, at least.

Wow, It's Been A Long Time

At the Red session last night, I ran into a teammate I'd played with in Green (PPG, may you live forever!) and Red. I hadn't seen her in ages, and was super excited to have discovered her again. She couldn't quite figure out who I was at first, until she heard me yelling her name. "What happened to your hair?" she asked. "Was it normal the last time you saw me?" Yup, it was. I guess that means it's been three years.

It was really good to see her again. :)

I'm starting to think I should add a little section to the Status Check in the margin to keep track of my color-a-day hair.

Today's color: fiery orange. I kinda like it. :)

Yay For Now

I redyed my hair with the Infra Red tonight. I like the result. Not quite as deep as I had originally wanted, but definitely more vibrant. I likes.

We'll see how long this new color lasts. I give it until the end of the week before it needs yet another redye.

11:42 PM | Hair| Comments (2)

Chameleon Hair

My hair can't seem to decide what color it wants to be. Every time I get under a different type of light it looks like a different color. Plus, it's fading, which was expected, but it's fading really fast, which was not expected, and is making me frown. :-/

The burgundy-ish from last week is now gone. Well, except when it's wet and under incandescent light, in which case it looks like a deeper reddish version of the burgundy-ish. But then it dries and look like yucky-ish. Speaking of yucky-ish, under fluorescent light it looks like major-yucky-ish, i.e. it looks like brown-that-failed.

It's a different story in the sun. On day two, it looked almost orange-blond in the sun. Now, it looks old-pinkish-something in the sun. It's such a weird color I can't really describe it.

I saw copper the other day, too. I think that was when it was dry, under the incandescent light at home.

In any case, I don't like it, and will be redyeing soon to get rid of the current dull dark blech. So now the question is, do I redye with Infra Red (the one that made me look like Raggedy Ann), or the even lighter but very lively Pillarbox Red (the one I had on my not-quite-a-mohawk last year)?

I think I'll flip a coin.

Bye Bye Blondie

After weeks of thinking about it, I finally bleached my roots and dyed my hair red. Well, sort of. It's something of a burgundy-ish color. Not quite the deep vibrant red I had in mind, but deep and vibrant in its own way, which is fine too. Not sure how it'll look with all the red shirts I own, though. Hrmm.

My original color choice was Manic Panic Infra Red, which, on the hair sample at the store, looked like the deep vibrant red I was after. It didn't have quite the same effect on my hair. I ended up looking like Raggedy Ann. No thank you!

I decided a deeper red was not the way to go. Perhaps purple would be better? I went to the store and picked up a jar of Manic Panic Ultra Violet. I'm starting to wonder whether I pick hair colors by how cool their names sound. I probably do.

Anyway, I got home and applied the Ultraviolet over the Raggedy Annfrared. I had no idea how it was going to turn out, but I figured it'd at least be better than what I already had. I had dinner, washed it out, and voila! Burgundy-ish!

I notice that the dye leaves my hair in a softer, less frizzy state than the bleach does. I'm pretty happy about that, since it means I'll be able to use less product on it.

Finally, the new color lends itself to ... hairclips! What a strange idea. I don't think I've ever used hairclips. They're not exactly a really long or really short hair thing. I guess that means my hair's not really short anymore.

Finally!

Redken Stinks

Literally. I can't stand the way that stuff smells, but hairstylists don't seem bothered by it ... probably because they don't have to wear it on their head all day. I had to go home and take a shower after my haircut just now.

No huge changes to the hair. Just had the ends trimmed so I don't look so darned shaggy. Maybe it's a little *too* trimmed now. On the other hand, I guess if it were only slightly trimmed I'd have to go back in three weeks. That's a little too much maintenance for my liking. It was fun having a new 'do / color every few weeks, but I can't wait 'til this grows out.

I can still smell the Redken, despite the shampoo, conditioner, wax, and shaper since. Blech.

Bleaching To Look Normal

My aunt, upon seeing my new non-spikey 'do, asked, "Are you going to dye the blond hair dark again?"

"No," I replied, "I'm going to bleach the roots."

Heh.

We continued a bit with the hair color discussion. She wanted me to get fobby highlights. I explained that I prefer to look different from the average Asian person. She tried to counter by saying that since most people in the US are Caucasian, I look more average blond, and therefore should have dark hair if I want to look less average.

In the moment, her attempt at winning the argument at all logical cost annoyed me, but now that I've written it down, it's pretty damned amusing.

Look at me! I have black hair! I am a national anomaly!

Red Sortamohawk Thoughts

Being out and about with a red sortamohawk has definitely been interesting. Old ladies adjust their spectacles at me, little kids stare with wide eyes, and today a random driver honked his horn at me on the freeway to give me a thumbs up.

Perhaps the best reaction I've gotten so far is from Christina, resident rink mom, when she said to me, "Good luck tomorrow."

"For what?"

*pause*

"Oh."

Tomorrow, I get to walk into the office with this.

Nadsy thinks I'm having an early midlife crisis. Maybe I am, or maybe I'm just having a little fun with my hair while I still can. The older I get, the less likely I will be to do stuff like this, and I don't want to reach the point of "no crazy 'dos" without having gotten it out of my system first.

This one goes a long way toward that end.

My mom called me just now to chat ...

M: Women get more headaches because because they have long hair.
M: Men have short hair, and it dries faster.
M: Wet hair gives you headaches.
V: It's a good thing I have short hair, then!
*mom pauses*
M: Your hair's still really short?
V: Yes.
M: Long hair's not the *only* thing that causes headaches ...
M: Miss Hong Kong always has long hair.
M: And so does Miss America.
V: Don't worry, mom, I'm not planning to enter any beauty pageants.

And later ...

M: Where are you?
V: At work.
M: Oh! You had to work today!
V: Yup.
M: Oh! It's not a national holiday!
V: Nope.
M: Cell phone minutes!
V: Yup.
M: Bye!

And with that, she hung up.

Effort Gauge

I resurrected the gym lunch today, 'cause I haven't exercised all week and that's just no good for my state of mind. I noticed something funny during my seated flys: The color of my face is a good indication of whether I'm pushing myself hard enough through a set. With my new hair color, I can easily gauge whether I'm putting a lot of effort into my reps; if I am, my face will match the tips of my hair by rep 5. If I haven't reached hair tip pink by rep 8, I'll know to bump up the weight. :)

Mohawk! Sort Of.

I decided to keep the look for the day. Fortunately, Dana gave me some ridiculously strong hair gel yesterday. (Thanks Dana!) She wasn't kidding when she said it could spike hair that fell down past your shoulders (or something to that effect). That fuzzy natural mohawk is now a spikey cemented into place mohawk. Kind Of An Auntiedote

So my aunt came downstairs today and declared that I should not keep my hair short because people might think I'm *gasp* gay.

"So?" I asked, annoyed that she said that in an "I shouldn't say this word" whisper.

Well, she said, maybe I should wait 'til I get married first.

I blinked at her a few times, and, since it's her birthday and I'm supposed to be nice, I told her I was hoping to find a matching pufferfish mate and left it at that.

But what I thought was ...

1. I'm not actively seeking a husband.

2. I'm not actively seeking anyone to date, for that matter. I haven't been single single for a while and I've forgotten what that's like. There are pluses to single singlehood, and I'd like to enjoy them while I can!

3. I don't think I want to be with anyone who doesn't think my Lisa Simpson / pufferfish head is cool. No, seriously, guys with a long hair requirement probably won't jibe so well with my hockey playing, motorcycle riding, car obsessing, tech geeky, I-want-to-play-every-sport-and-kick-everyone's-ass-at-it self anyhow. So there.

Okay, back to bug fixing my hockey team's website. I don't think anyone else knows those bugs are there, but I do, and they're bugging me (hey, I think I'm on to something here), so I have to go fix them.

Hockey Hockey Hockey 1: New Elbow Pads!

I've been looking for a new pair of elbow pads for a good 3 weeks now. (I still can't believe it took me 2+ years to figure out my pads were too big for me.) I tried Power Play, EWH, the shop at Logitech ... nothing. I decided it was time to trek across the bay to Hockey X-Sport. I've had good luck finding the right gear there (better helmet and pants), so I had high hopes for them.

Indeed, they had a larger selection of elbow pads than all of the other places I went to combined. In particular, they had a good selection of junior pads, which was good because I'm just a little too small to qualify as a size small hockey playing adult.

I tried on a bunch, got some help, and settled on a pair of CCM 1152s. Yes, 1152s. Good stuff! The best part is, I got 'em for only $40! Hooray for: (1) being small enough to wear junior sizes (2) the cool sales dude noticing that it was last year's model and therefore should be on sale (3) the 10% off deal that my women's league has with HXS.

Hockey Hockey Hockey 2: New Stick!

Remember how my B stick finally died a week or two ago? That discovery was followed by two thoughts.

Thought one: "Aww, my stick is broken!"
Thought two: "Ooh, my stick is broken!"

I'd been eyeing something lighter, and perhaps less wooden, for a while now. Lately, I've been looking at the Bauer Vapor sticks. Yes, I am now the proud new owner of a Bauer Vapor XX Intermediate stick. It only cost me *cough cough* $150. Holy crap, I can't believe I spent that much on a stick!

My old Montreal sticks were only $30 or $40 bucks. Goodness, my tastes have gotten expensive.

Here, too, the HXS guys were super cool and helpful. Hooray for good service!

Hockey Hockey Hockey 3: My First Maroon Game!

Yes, that's right, I got to sub in my first Maroon game last night. I was quite excited and a little nervous. Mostly excited, since I knew I was at least of average Maroon speed. Thank you Cap'n Naomi for letting me play!

Anyway, the team I subbed for didn't win, but didn't totally get crushed, and I didn't screw anything up, so hooray. Final score: 0-2. Bummer to not get on the scoreboard, but it wasn't functional anyhow, so actually no one got on the scoreboard. Ha.

I think I played a fairly decent game. I was happy because my teammates for the night were vocally supportive when I did things well, and Mary (my Red team's goalie) was very good about being constructively critical, which, as always, was much appreciated. I got a whole bunch of shots off, and amazingly, they all ended up on net. I even had one where I chased down the puck off to the side, did this strange discus spin and launched it with surprising speed ... into the goalie, but hey, it was on net, and someone actually commented that it was a pretty cool shot. Whoo.

I can't wait to move up to Maroon. There's lots to learn. I have to say, Maroon pace makes Lake Belmont seem waaay to small.

I wonder if tonight's Red game will feel slow to me. I'll soon find out.

I left my water bottle at the rink.

Thought one: "Aww, I lost my water bottle."
Thought two: "Ooh, I lost my water bottle."

Not that I'm going to replace it with a $150 water bottle or anything.

Speaking of $150 purchases, my new stick rocks! I was careful to pick one with a blade curved like my Montreal sticks, so there was almost no adjustment period. My new stick is stronger and lighter. I looove it. Do I love it $120 more than my old stick?

Well ...

Oh, speaking of sticks, someone finished her shot by whacking her stick into my head last night. Ow. I had an almostgoal in the ensuing power play. Actually, I guess I had a lot of almostgoals. Andrea, please add those to my almostpoints count.

Amusing pre-game side note: The goalie on the other team cooed over my new short short spikey hair, said I looked like a 12-year old boy (as a compliment, for those of you who aren't sure whether that was a positive or negative comment), declared it cute, cooed some more, and then paused, looked at me, and asked, "Wait, you're straight, right?"

Dopey FOB Man or Lisa Simpson?

My hair was getting long (this short hair thing takes work!) and I was feeling poor and lazy. There's a Supercuts Plus two blocks from Doug's house. I headed over there, thinking I could just say, "Everything half as long as it is now," and get my point across. Boy was I wrong!

Red flag number one: there were two people cutting hair, and they were both middle aged Asian women. I should know that middle aged Asian women don't really understand short spikey hair on girls.

Why not, I thought. I'm here, so I might as well get it cut. My turn came up, and I realized I couldn't understand what the lady was trying to say to me 'cause her accent was too thick. I probably should have left then, huh?

I was dumb, and I stayed, and I told the lady, "Everything half as long as it is now, textured, crazy messy spikey, please." She said, "Half inch?" Well, I figured this out after 3 exchanges. "No," I said, "Half as long." Back and forth, and then, in typical middle aged Asian woman style, she said, "Like a man?"

100 waving red flags! Stop right there! Roll cautiously back to the pits! Catastrophe ahead!

I somehow didn't process the 100 waving red flags in time.

And then ... she used a freakin' trimmer! Don't buzz my head! Aurgh!

And the aftermath: If I don't put product in my hair I look like a fobby poofball head. If I put anything less than a gigantic gob of GigaHold gel in my hair I also look like a fobby poofball head. Fortunately, with a gigantic gob of GigaHold gel, I look like Lisa Simpson.

Better than looking like a megafob. Besides, it'll grow back, right?

Teddio, I'll take you up on your offer to cut my hair next time.

A few blurbs about what I did today ...

Boogaloos

Doug and I felt breakfastey, so we headed over to the Mission to try a place called Boogaloos. On their menu they claim that they will charge $1 per indoor cell phone use offense. I wonder if they ever do. I'd like to see a charge for that on my bill. That'd be classic.

I had a couple cornmeal pancakes for breakfast. Me, eat pancakes?! Where's the protein?! I justified my blatant consumption of carbs with the fact that I had a hockey game in the early afternoon. Hooray for excuses.

A-Team II Game: Ice Monkeys (My Excuse For Eating Pancakes)

I'm not going to number my A-Team II Game posts anymore, since I don't play every A-Team II game. I've lost track! Anyway, we played the Ice Monkeys this afternoon at 12:15. So early! My body was definitely not in hockey mode, and didn't get into hockey mode until well into the 2nd period. I scored my first A-Team II goal today! Must have been 'cause I finally got my jersey. It's got my name on the back: SOOPAHVIV. Yeah!

We lost, 1-3, but we had fun, so it's cool. I got to play wing and had a great center, which made life very wonderful.

Yummy Food. Go Sharks!

Had lunch with some of the A-Team II crew at Aqui. Cool restaurant, great food! Got to watch the oh-so-exciting 2nd period of the Sharks game, too. BuRp! WhoO! YeaH!

$$$ Motorcycle Gloves

I've been feeling a little uneasy about my motorcycle gloves since my last flop. I didn't even really slide on the pavement, and yet my right glove was starting to look worn down and slightly unstitched. I had doubts about whether it would hold up enough to save the skin on my hand in the even of a slide. I asked Doug about it, and he agreed that I should get better ones.

Tried on a bunch of gloves at Cycle Gear and Road Rider this afternoon. In the end, I debated between a pair of Alpinestars GP Plus gloves and Alpinestars GP Tech gloves. The GP Plus were $160, the GP Tech were $216. The difference was the GP Tech had an armored gauntlet and this extra material (I later found out it was Kevlar) right where you'd slide on your hand. What to do? I imagined sliding down feet after feet of pavement and decided I wanted the GP Tech gloves. Bye bye, money. Hello, skin on my hands, glad you're still there.

More Hockey!

I got to sub for Red Fury tonight. I even played center for the first time in longer than I can remember. This time, I didn't screw it up! Yeah!

I did pick up my first penalty in over a year, though. Tripping, the ref said. She also said she could easily have called roughing. I was puzzled, but there was no point in protesting. From my point of view, I was going for a puck along the boards, and I was travelling at the boards. The other player was going for the same puck, and she was coming up the boards. We got there at the same time. We collided. She fell. I didn't.

Nonetheless, since she fell and they called a penalty on me, I made sure she was okay when she got up. She was fine. No harm done, and we killed the penalty without a giving up a goal. Woop.

Still, we lost 0-2. Bummer.

Trying To Get The Hair Just Right

I can't figure out what product to use to make my hair stand up and be spiky. I had spiking pomade, but it flopped over. I think tomorrow I'll try either ridiculous amounds of the pomade or my new gravity-defying spiking gel. I'll get my hair to spike yet!

Hack Refinement

I like my short hair. I wanted something crazier and shorter, though. I realized I wasn't going to get the kind of cut I wanted in SSF. Where to go? To the Castro, of course!

After a lovely breakfast in Noe Valley, Doug dropped me off a few blocks up, on Castro at 18th. I walked around a bit, made note of all potential salons, and settled on 5th Element.

Finally, something more like what I had in mind!

I Suspect More Hair Hacking In My Future

Just took my first short hair shower. I kept trying to run my fingers through ... nothing.

I want shorter and spikier, I think. Hehe.

Hair Hacked!

Holy moly, I have short hair! Yes, that's right, I finally got it cut. It hasn't been this short since I was 6 months old!

I know you're all going to ask, so here are some before and after photos ...

Before 1: Saturday, before John and Ellen's wedding. A very rare shot of me with my hair down ... and in a dress!

Before 2: Sunday, before my car got dinged. My usual ponytail and shades look.

After: Today, one hour ago.

All that hair, gone! I believe the lady at the salon stated it pretty well when she said, "Now THAT's a HAIRCUT!"

They gooey Redken Rewind stuff they gave me for my hair smells a bit like my car's leather conditioner. Some of you might find that disturbing, but I think that's pretty darned cool.

What's A Girl Gotta Do To Get Her Hair Hacked Off?

Looked up some places near work where I could get my hair chopped off. Decided I liked the name "Crimpers Bizarre". Headed out. Parked right out front.

They were closed! What's with all the places that look okay to me being closed? This happened twice yesterday, too. Pfft!

My Weekend In LA

I'm on my way back up from my first visit to LA in a couple years. We're somewhere between the stinky town of Coalinga and San Francisco right now. Doug's driving the final leg, so I figured I'd be good and get my blogging out of the way.

Perhaps I Picked The Wrong Hotel ...

After being on the road for 7 hours Friday night, we finally got off our exit a little before 11. At the bottom of the off ramp, a police cruiser and two police officers were arresting a couple guys sitting on the sidewalk. We took a left off the ramp, and one block later, there were police cars everywhere! There were somewhere between 6 and 10 police cars blocking the intersection to the left. Another block later, 20 police cars blocking the intersection to the left. Holy crap, did I book us a hotel in the hood or something? Another block or two, and we took a couple right turns into our hotel parking lot. We got out of the car, and there was a police helicopter flying overhead, shining a spotlight on the police-blocked blocks nearby.

I fully expected my car to get its windows smashed overnight, but fortunately it survived the night (and the next night) without incident.

Saturday Morning: Wedding!

The next morning was John and Ellen's wedding. We headed to the church, sat for an hour, heard a couple really sweet bits from John and Ellen about why they wanted to marry each other, got some Catholic churchy songs stuck in our heads, took some pictures, were invited to sit silenty and pray while everyone who was Catholic ate body-of-Christ wafers ... I wondered how an agnostic was supposed to pray, watched the rest of the ceremony, and cried a bit.

Saturday Afternoon: Reception!

The reception was held at a country club up the hill from the church. It was really pretty there, and the weather was beautiful. We ate, took some more pictures, sat down, ate some more ... they showed a slideshow, I watched, and cried some more. Yes, I cry at weddings, and now you all know.

Stuck In My Head!

Catholic churchy song stuck in my head (Doug's too). Uffa.

Saturay Night: Huntington Beach

We headed southwest (from Fullerton) in search of water (the ocean, that is) and dinner. We drove along the coast from Long Beach to Newport Beach, then doubled back (Doug was having a major U-turn day) to Huntington Beach for food. The pizza at BJ's looked good so we ended up eating there. For the record, Teddio, BJ's pizza is pretty darned good, but it's too different from Zachary's for comparison!

The waitress was lame and slow.

Hair Hacking

I mentioned a week or two ago that I was considering either shaving my head or getting a floppy red mohawk. After some discussion with Doug we decided that I'd just get it cut short (I think I'll go for a crazy Lisa Simpson look) ... in exchange for Doug's growing a goatee (whoo!). I figured Sunday would be a good day to get the hair hacked, after spending half of Saturday with it down.

I thought it'd be fairly easy to find a place to cut my hair. After all, I was in LA, right? We went to Santa Monica & Venice. The plan was I'd get my frosty Black Forest drink from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and then find a place to hack off my hair. That proved to be no easy task. Too ghetto, too expensive, not open ... as I write this I've still got all my hair. Drat.

Parking Lots Suck 1: Ding!

We'd had good parking lot karma up until the Santa Monica boardwalk. We parked far enough out every time that no one ever parked near my car. Finally, at the beach, the parking lot karma ran out. We parked in an end spot way out in the parking lot, but then this stupid fucking idiot of a non-driver parked his piece of shit car by Braille on my rear bumper. Fucker! Mr. "I Love Jesus" car freshener, if there hadn't been little kids in the car next to yours when I first got back to my car and saw your bumper on mine, you'd have driven home on your spare tire, minus your front fucking license plate. Or maybe you'd have had your front fucking license plate, smashed through your front fucking windshield. Damn you, you stupid fuck.

The kids in the adjacent car were dinging the side of the car that dinged mine with their car door, but unfortunately the car that dinged mine was such a junker that it didn't matter. Rarr.

Parking Lots Suck 2: Parking Lot X 2!

I think it took us an hour to actually get out of the parking lot. It was, as Doug likes to say, a total clusterfuck (yes, I swear a lot on days when someone hurts my car). 20 minutes after I calmed down enough to get into my car without destroying the one parked behind me, we were all of 2 feet from my parking spot. I got to look at the aforementioned piece of shit car that whole time, resisting the urge to jump out and destroy it.

Stupid people in LA everywhere! Zero common sense and etiquette. After we got past the stupid piece of shit car I started getting annoyed at all of the bastards trying to cut in front of people (and for what, to get one car ahead?), especially the one who almost hit my car trying to squeeze his way in, and spent the rest of our hellish hour in the parking lot resisting the urge to destroy all the bastard drivers' cars with my Maglite.

Doug somehow got into a shouting match with a total Neanderthal, who then decided he would try to ram his piece of shit truck (we must have parked in the piece of shit lot by accident) into my car. I almost had a heart attack. What would I have done if he'd actually hit my car? Off the top of my head, three possibilities:

1. Nothing. I'd sue his ass, file charges, and collect insurance money.
2. Tried to beat him up with my Maglite and landed myself in the hospital.
3. Landed him in the hospital with my Maglite and wound up in jail.

Perhaps I should just be glad that the most damage my car sustained today was from the fucker-who-couldn't-park.

And Now, A Special Message From Doug

Pies go in, chickens come out. Blog that.

Fresh Cow! Moo!

Stopped at Harris Ranch for dinner on Sunday. I ordered filet mignon, and boy was that the right choice! Meat that melts in your mouth! Most excellent!

The waitress was mediocre for most of the meal, but she really came through in the end, when Doug tried to order dessert. She ran to the kitchen, came back, and reported that they were all out of what he wanted. She went through the remaining options, and while we were redeciding, she disappeared. Right as we were about to give up and leave without dessert, she came running back with the dessert Doug had originally ordered. She put the berry-peach cobbler on the table and said breathlessly, "I stole one from the steakhouse!" Turns out they still had cobblers at the nicer restaurant next door. Hooray for her for going over there to check!

Still Stuck In My Head!

Catholic churchy song still stuck in my head (Doug's too). Uffa.

No More Road Trips In My Car

It's now Monday morning. My car is sooo dirty. There's chocolate in the seats and water spots on the center console. Poor car. I think I need to wash it tonight.
