A Burninator Haiku
Saturday night at
Belmont for Burnination
against Lady Sharks
we played pretty well
evened it up 3-to-3
with minutes to go
but then Gina scored
yet another goal. darn it!
four for her tonight
that Gina, on fire!
I kept missing by inches
almost goals don't count :(
oh, emoticons
and dashes, they are silent
final score: 3-4

ho mmm tsee tsee gay

mmm gum joi gong lah
I just noticed I use "tsee" three times in the haiku above. They're three different words, inflected three different ways. The first one is a high tone, and it means to know. The second one is sort of a middle tone, and it means like or similar to. The third one is a low tone, and it's part of "tsee gay", which means myself.
That probably meant nothing to most of you, but I thought it was pretty neat.
And now for the English version.
why am i like this?
not unhappy, but want to
argue everything
so not like myself
want to talk to me? careful!
i should shut up now
It's not one of my usual line-for-line translations. I couldn't get direct line translations to fit into haiku form. Same idea, though.
Off to go snark.

lee pai lahn doe say!
choah hai do, soh fah shue tsai!
fah sung jeung, laem laem
That second line is a great example of how Chinese is a tonal language. The first "gum tsee" is pronounced high; the second is pronounced low. Pronounced high, it means "this time". Pronounced low, it means "so late". Confused yet?
oh my! it's friday!

Friday means one more day before I spend five days in a row (six, if I feel sufficiently crazy) on the ice. The long awaited power skating camp is here! 'Tis the expensive finale to my skate skate skate skate skate project this season. I'll have a few weeks to practice what I learn, and then, evals for winter season in my women's league. Evals. That's what started this whole crazy summer of hockey and skating. I've loved every minute of playing in Red this season, but I'm gonna make Maroon this winter, dammit! And if I don't, well, I'll fall over trying.

Every blogger's nightmare! No more swearing, no more ranting, no more being mean, no more posts about road battles with stupid drivers ... looks like all that's left to write about is hockey. Oh, but I shouldn't write about my injuries. I'll make her worry and she'll tell me to find a less injurious (is that a word?) sport.
Okay, maybe not. I will temper only the most unapprovable content.
This does, however, remind me of a conversation I had with my mom earlier this week. I will blog it, but not explain. You may interpret as you wish.
- What are those?
- Birth control pills.
- Why do you need those?

And again, in English!
i have lots to say.
but i don't know how. need more
words. don't know the words.
Okay, small cheat: "need more" is really "not enough", but hey, I managed another haiku-to-haiku translation!
And the explanation: I wanted write about how I feel. Well, I can't, because I don't know enough Cantonese words to express how I feel. I think this is a very Chinese thing, to not talk about your feelings. It just wasn't done in my family. We also didn't talk about relationships. Why, I don't know.
Here's a kicker: Growing up, I don't remember ever getting a hug from my mom, once I passed little rugrat stage. It wasn't until I was leaving for California (to go off to college) that I got one.
I've since learned that hugs are one of the best things in the world. When I go home, my mom gets hugs from me, and she has no choice in the matter. Funny thing is, I think she kinda likes 'em.

Pay Goo
I thought a little more about my Thursday Cantonese Haiku while in the car earlier today. It occurred to me that, if my understanding of the word-sounds are correct, "pay goo" does not mean ass and does not mean bum bum. I think ... it literally means "fart drum".

Thursday Cantonese Haiku
I almost forgot to write my Thursday Cantonese Haiku!
dieu lay say yun tao!
seung jong lut gnoh goh tao ah?
seak gnoh goh pay goo!
In English, for my non-Cantonese-speaking readers and my Cantonese-speaking readers who can't figure out what sounds my "words" are supposed to represent:
screw you dickhead!
are you trying to knock my head off?
kiss my ass!
This week's Cantonese haiku is dedicated to the fool to almost broke my neck on Tuesday.
I'm not as upset as my translation may suggest. "Dickhead" sounds a bit harsh, but it was the next closest thing to "dead person head", which is what "say yun tao" literally means. That, and the "kiss my ass" line is in there mainly 'cause I think the phrase "pay goo" is funny. I think that might actually mean "bum bum" rather than "ass". You have to keep in mind that I have the Cantonese vocabulary of a five year old.
Just for fun, here's a more literal translation:
screw you dead person head!
want to knock off my head ah?
kiss my bum bum!

Haikus for Poets and Songwriters
1:22:00 PM PDT
Sorrow makes poets
We cry and words come flowing
Hence all the sad songs
Love makes poets too
We float atop clouds of words
That turn into song
Songs for people in love, songs for people hurting from it.
And for everyone else, angry music.
That about covers it, yes?

Haikuets?
