User Error

I've never liked the left turn from southbound Moffet Blvd. onto 101 South. The extra mini island that sticks out on the left side of the onramp always seemed to cut my turn too tight. Today, I actually took some time to study the intersection and pick a different line. I started my turn a little later, and whaddaya know, it's a really fun onramp entrance! I've just been doing it wrong the last year and a half.

Usually, I complain that Caltrans purposely lays down non-optimal lines to slow people down. Usually, I ignore those lines and drive what I think is fastest. Ironically, there are no dotted lane outlines at this intersection. All that slowness was purely due to user error.

• • •

It amuses me that when I choose between saying "non-optimal" and "suboptimal" I'm actually choosing between two voices in my head.

It also amuses me that I choose to say "user error" instead of "driver error" because the generic geekiness of "user error" makes me grin, and even though "driver error" is more precise, if taken in the wrong geeky way it would mean some sort of software-to-hardware interface failure, which, if it were to happen in my car, would probably suck a lot more than having to take a slow line through a corner.

That Didn't Go Very Far

I was off by 10 miles on my prediction: My car's gas light went off after 260 miles.

Still, not counting track days, this is the least number of miles I've ever gotten on one tank. I somehow feel as if my good behavior gas savings experiment has backfired.

This tank was way more fun than the last one, though!

Not Worth The Gas Savings

My car had been getting terrible gas mileage (270 miles a tank) the last few months, and I was afraid that something might be wrong with it. I finally sucked it up and decided to drive as conservatively as I could to see whether it was a problem with my car or my driving. I behaved myself at every stoplight, accelerated slowly, mostly followed the speed limit, didn't get pissed off when people drove like asses, and cruised in as high a gear as I could. The end result? Over 330 miles on the last tank. That usually happens only on long road trips. Given all the surface streets I have to take these days, 330 miles is a damned good number.

Great, so my car is okay. I'm not doing that again for a long time. It's painful having to drive like that. To make things worse, increasing the number of miles I get on a well-behaved tank only prolongs the pain. I'm going to have to make up for the last 10 days.

I predict 250 miles on my next tank.

Ready, set, vroom.

Central Speedway

On my way into work today, there was a roadworker on the shoulder of Central Expressway, standing behind a large orange "Road Work Ahead" sign, waving two reddish flags at passing cars.

I was about to wave an acknowledgement, until I realized he was a Caltrans worker, not a corner worker.

Vroom anyway.

Rice For Breakfast

I'll admit it: I'm a car snob. My car is far far down the food chain in the automotive world, but nonetheless, Kraut Rockets sit one step above traditional Rice Rockets, which, in most real world cases, are flashy, full of attitude, and slow.

I particularly like to pick on late model Civic Sis. Why? 'Cause they're like little weak versions of my car, and the person behind the wheel almost always carries a rice rocket mentality. Wanna go? Yeah? And what's that? Did you say you'll eat my dust?

Yes, I believe you did.

I will now bottle the gloating and issue the following disclaimer: Being so low on the food chain, I know better than to mess with WRXs (especially STis) and Lancer Evos. I do mess with 3 series BMWs (M3s excluded, because I know better), even if I risk getting smoked, solely because I've developed a distaste for Bay Area BMW drivers (Nadsy excluded, because I like him). As for M3s, S4s, and everything else on up the chain, they don't even know I'm there, which suits me just fine!

I told you I was a bad road citizen! Plus, I'm driving on my hooligan tank for the rest of the week.

Last Ice Before I Lose My Teeth

Stepped on the ice for the last time before I go under on Thursday. Played my second ever Green goalie game tonight. Let in a couple of goals by pulling some newbie netminder crap, but fortunately no more than that.

Final score: 3-2. I won in net! I won in net!

I won, but only because Secret Weapon came up BIG and scored two goals tonight, all while playing D. Yes, D! The second one was a total Secret Weapon shot, too. It was hard enough that even though it hit the other goalie's stick it still went in.

Anyway, I gave up a five hole breakaway shot to Jena (good going, Jena!) and then a wraparound on my left. I almost gave up a wraparound on my right earlier in the game. Need to promote that to the top of my list of things to work on. Gotta learn to seal up that area next to the post!

Finally got to try out my new goalie gear. I love the skates. I can stand straight and even lean back a little withough falling over! The catcher and blocker rock; they're way comfy. The helmet was okay ... I have less visibility in my goalie helmet than I'm used to. I'll adjust over time.

I retweaked my knee, my shoulder is still mysteriously sore, and for some reason my neck was aching and stiff the whole time, but I survived, and my body will soon get a nice long break from hockey to heal.

• • •

I always drive a bit like Speed Racer after hockey, so of course I zipped around the curves near Lake Merced and raced cars at each stoplight down Sunset. My accomplishment of the night: soundly beating an RX-8 off the line. There's something really satisfying about beating a lighter, more powerful, more expensive car. Ha! Take that! Pow!

Question of the Night

An MR2, a Trans Am, a Z4, a G35, and a GTI are driving from Lake Merced Loop onto Sunset at 11:30 PM. The posted speed limit in the area marked in red below is 30 MPH.

At what speed did they travel through the red zone?

Less Ugh, More Vroom

Remember this?

I took the best line on it yet. I'm judging that by smoothness of turn and exit speed. Yesterday's exit speed: 70 MPH! That's 10 higher than my personal best. The cool thing was, I wasn't even using all the space (double yellow to curb to double yellow), and I wasn't really pushing my car to its traction limit. That can only mean one thing: I was driving a better line yesterday than I ever have in the past. Most cool.

Before people start getting on my case about speeding on city streets, let me offer the following points: (1) That road is wiiide. (2) There is very little traffic on it. (3) There are no parked cars on the side. (4) Visibility through the turn is excellent. (5) The road is very well paved. (6) It's actually a misplaced chunk of racetrack.

That said, yes, I know, public roadways are not meant to be used for honing my track skills.

I can't get a ticket for blogging about road transgressions, can I?

Another OTL?!

Two overtime losses in two days. Ouch! Subbed for Red Inferno today. Their goalie did surprisingly well early in the game, and then had a bit of a meltdown toward the end. Bummer.

Even more of a bummer was that the other team tied it with 6 seconds left on the clock. Ouch again.

I got my first Red Division goal of the season. I can't believe it took so long. It's not as if I don't take the puck in, and it's not as if I don't shoot. This all leads me to believe that my shot sucks ass. I still haven't shaken my habit of shooting into the goalie. Maybe I need hypnosis, so that I'll look at and shoot for the area around the goalie instead. Goalie body, bad. Gap next to goalie body, good. Repeat. Repeat again.

My skate skate skate skate skate skate skate project is coming along nicely. I felt fast (when I wasn't completely exhausted and sucking wind). My take the puck in and shoot it project is coming along nicely, too. My get off the ice so as not to be a hog project could probably use some work. I'll have to remember to ask my coach to call me on that in future games.

Ice hog excuse of the night, after skating the puck all the way to the other goal while everyone else went for a line change ... "I was, uh, buying you guys time!" Yes, of course, I shot that one into the goalie.

I must still have been riled up from the game, because I was a bit of a speed demon on the roads afterward. There was the tailgater with the maladjusted headlights who ticked me off, so I slowed to 55 to trap him, dropped it into 3rd, and sped off. Then there was the übersquid on the sports bike that was bugging me, so I decided to embarrass him on the 380 ramp in my car. Quit being squidly, lame-O, you can't even corner yet. Yes, I know, it's not good to pick on or egg on motorcyclists. I of all people should know that. That said, I don't ride an imbecile (idiot sometimes, imbecile never). After Mr. Squid there was an Evo I had to keep behind me, and while I was keeping the Evo in check I came across a nicely modified 20th! Had to slow down and give props to the 20th. Vroom. The pretty GTI mellowed me out some, just in time for the surface streets. Made it home in one piece, and no ticket. Phew!

Hockey Clinic Thursday

I made it to the Thursday night hockey clinic 2 weeks in a row! We did more Russian Circles tonight. I'm starting to hate them, but I'm getting better at them. I tried to do power turns during our putz-around time at the end of the session and had a few great slide-outs. Just trying to live up to my Slide-Out Barbie trophy, that's all.

My stopping got even worse. I'm completely lifting my inner foot off the ice now. What's up with that?

In some post-hockey clinic news, I finally took the right curve on Lake Merced Blvd going west between Sunset and Skyline properly. Yes, finally! A perfect line! No more of this early apexing crap!

I know, I know, it's not a racetrack. Good thing, too, or I'd be smashing my expensive side mirrors. If I decide to take my car back to the track, someone please remind me to swap my US spec glass back in, okay?

Ooh, ooh, an illustration! Fun curve in red:

Doesn't that make you want to drive it?

Vroom!

I was suffering from motorcycle withdrawal, so I took my car on a little twisty road detour on my way to hockey today. I am sooo glad I put the rims back on! Hellooo happy handling!

Good for my car that I can go fast on twisties with it. Bad for me that I can drive faster than I can ride on those same roads. It is, however, a minor consolation that I outdrove the guy on the motorcycle behind me.

Can we make a rule that people who drive the posted speed limit on twisty roads should not be allowed to drive them on weekends? One lame-O stationwagon was all it took to ruin what would have been the beeeautiful stretch of Woodside between Alice's and 280.

More car-related babble: A new AutoZone just opened in Fremont. It's nice! It's about 10 times nicer than the ghetto Kragen across the street from it.

Strange that I know auto parts shops in Fremont. It's not even my hood!

And a car-related question-rant to the guy in the Passat this afternoon: If the parking lot is 5% full, and I park more than halfway out from where all the cars are concentrated, why the hell must you park your car in the space next to mine?! Can't you tell I'm trying to keep my car away from all the other cars in the lot?! What are you, some kind of parking lot sadist?!

92 Pickup

On my way onto 92 from Bridgepoint, I purposely blow by an impatient Eclipse who's stuck behind some slooow not-so-notable car just before the onramp merge. The Eclipse catches up to me on 92, pulls up alongside my car, and nods for me to race with him. I'm not one to race much these days, so I give him a big cheesy "I was just messing around on the onramp" grin instead. He takes off and heads up the hill. We both get off at the same exit, and at the light he stops and rolls down the window to ask if I have time for coffee. No, I say, I have to get back to work. Then he asks if I have a number. No again, I say, or perhaps it was "Nope". Silly Eclipse driver, if you want to pick up girls with your car you should at least put a spoiler on it. You need bigger wheels, too. Perhaps I was misleading you with my ghetto steelies. If I'd had my 17 inchers on I bet you'd have known better than to ask.

Looking Through Turns

You know how they always say you should look through turns? I'd never been able to do it my car, both on the road and on the track. Well, not anymore! I'm happy to say that I can now look through most turns while in my car. I can actually feel the difference, too. It's definitely more smooth and controlled.

And why? Because of my motorcycle, of all things! Since I've started riding, I've had to learn to look through turns. In a car you don't realize it if you're a little jerky. On a bike, it's scary as hell! I remember on my first couple rides in the twisties I had a lot of trouble on what would now be fairly comfortable turns, and all because I was looking at the road just in front of me. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong, I fixed it in a hurry. It's amazing how your bike goes where you look, and all of that road in between your body knows to stitch together.

Better driving through riding! Imagine that.

Brakes That Don't Fade

Forgot to give the new brake pad report. They more than rock. I blew turn 14 (the reason I needed new pads) only a few times all day, and that was because of me, not my brakes. Those things would grip and sometimes have the car down to turning speed a good 5-10 feet before corner entry. Kick ass.

Wednesday In Review

Hi. It's Wednesday. It was a day of broken stuff. Stuff like my pants, my sunglasses, my car ...

So the pants. I put my 2 week old Nike convertible capris on this morning and found a tear in the seam on the side. That sucks. It's not huge but it's growing. Rarr.

The sunglasses. They just snapped. Right before my first session on the track, too. I threw them out. Rarr.

The car. Yeah, so I was at the track today. Ten minutes after I broke my sunglasses I whacked a cone pylon atop a stick pylon with my passenger side mirror. It shattered the mirror and sprayed tiny glass shards all over the place. Bye bye mirror.

That was the short version of my passenger side mirror story. If you want the long version of what happened you can come see me. If you want the medium length version of what happened you can also come see me. If you want to know why it happened it's because my head wasn't into the whole driving thing today. My head isn't into much these days, aside from work. That blows. Maybe I should expense my replacement mirror.

Got to meet some of the VW folks today. That was rad. Got to check out the CAI and the fog lights I want. After looking at them I realize they might end up fighting for the same space in my car. Boo.

Also got to meet one of the instructors, who came up to me and said, "Hey, you look familiar. You come to my work." Turns out he works at the Tully's near Doug's house. I see him at least once a week. Small world!

Strange thing happened just before lunch. The badass silver GTI pitted across from me went on track and proceeded to lose 4 of its 5 lugnuts off the driver side front wheel. Don't know what exactly to say about that, except "Holy Fark!"

After my little mirror incident I asked the Thunderhill folks for a vacuum, and they provided me with the Hoover (or something Hooveresque) they use for their front office. Better than nothing! I sucked up the glass shards all over my car and headed back out. Slowed it down and worked on entry speed and smoothness for the next couple sessions. Felt better, and for my final session I finally tried going out instructorless. I loooved it. It was nice to get to work on the stuff in my head without someone talking to me. I think the next time I go back I'll ask to alternate sessions with and without an instructor.

Finished up, headed back, stopped for dinner at Red Lobster. Halfway through our first basket of biscuits they had a total blackout on their block. Our server was awesome, though. She told us, no dinner, no charge for your drinks, and would you like some more biscuits? Hell yeah! Those things were the whole reason we went there. One more basket of biscuits, a few bucks tip for the free grub, and we headed for home.

Saw a nasty accident near the 880 / Bay Bridge split. Some overturned vehicle that got majorly crunched. It was white, and big. Not sure what it was, though, because it was too crunched.

Home now. I'm tired.

It's really hard to drive without a passenger side mirror.

Vroom 1

Cleaned out my carbs last night. My hands smell like chemicals now. I realized yet again that the picture I have in my head of what car and motorcycle parts might look like is almost always nothing close to what they look like in reality. Had a good time pulling everything apart. I still don't quite understand the entire mechanism, but I certainly have a much better idea of how it works than I did before I started.

Vroom 2

Ordered new brake pads from Porterfield just now. R-4S pads for my front brakes. I was gonna replace them all around but I could really use the money for other things. Perhaps when my rears wear out I'll replace them with the same.

So the plan is, my car will brake like a mofo and my front wheels will have a perpetual dusty gunmetal look.

Vroom 3

Yesterday I jacked up the front of my car to measure the brake pads, and the rear wheel on the jack side lifted, too. That sway bar is badass.

The Thunderhill Report

Roh! Back from Thunderhill! I'm intact, and so is my car. A very good thing, yes yes.

Drove up last night and stayed in Willows. It was pretty crazy watching the outside temperature go up as we drove inland. It was getting later into the evening and yet the temperature was rising. I think it hit 90-something along the way, and this was with the sun completely down.

Got to Willows, checked in, and headed over to McDonald's for some McFlurries. It was late and they were getting ready to close up. Still, the lady behind the counter was totally cool about serving us, and when I asked for extra Oreo in my McFlurry she put in extra extra Oreo for both me and Nadsy. She even swung us a deal for buying two.

Friday, track day. One of my instructors offered to take me around the track a few times in his car after one of our sessions. He had brought his teaching car, an almost-stock Neon. Damn, he just threw that thing around the track. He was running down Stealths and 3000GTs as if he were in a big bad Viper. Too bad he drove better than he could instruct. He threw so many instructions at me he totally screwed up my next session. Ask Nadsy. He got to see my laps deteriorate from great lines to blown lines on every turn after my instructor started yapping at me.

Speaking of instructors, I saw one of my instructors from last month's driving school. When I talked to him then he had just killed an engine on his RX-7 race car. Today I asked him how his car was doing. "Same as always," he replied. So it was still busted? "Oh! No, I built myself another one from parts." So you have two now? "No, actually, I have seven." Seven RX-7s?! Turns out he has 5 from different generations and 2 racers. That and he has other cars, too. Damn.

Hey, remember how I was gonna test out my sway bar?

So Mr. RX-7 came up to me at the end of the day and said, "Hey, you were three-wheelin' it through some of those corners!" Inner rear wheel up, more weight on my fronts. Glad I'm cornering hard enough to make use of it. That made my day.

And what a strange day. During my fourth session a thunderstorm started brewin' past the end of the front straightaway. A thunderstorm?! Rain in Northern California in the summer?!

And then it got stranger. A lap and a half later we got red flagged. What was wrong? Did the lightning set something on fire? After we got off the track, we found out that one of the S2000s in my group had managed to flip itself in Turn 3. The medics came, they cleared everything off, and then airlifted the instructor out.

People started bailing. Rain on the track and wrecked cars weren't all that appealing, I suppose. I can understand that. These people have $100,000+ cars, and insurance doesn't cover them on the track.

Nadsy's car started clicking. It had managed to eat enough oil to get too low. Good thing I had brought some extra with me. Synthetic, to boot! Only the best for Nadsy's M3.

Anyway, I did a final session with about 7 other cars on a damp track, grabbed a T-shirt and some food, and called it a day. What did I learn today?

1. Vroom!
2. People who bring SUVs to a track are dumb.
3. People who bring Ford Taurus (Mercury Sable?) stationwagons to a track are dumb.
4. People who drive their SUVs and/or stationwagons really slow but don't let people pass them are dumb.
5. My sway bar rocks.

Whoo.

Thunderhill!

Thunderhill was a blast.

I went Vrooooom.

I terrorized a lame-O BMW driver who didn't want to let me pass.

I got blown away by Corvettes and Vipers.

Coooool.

That poor guy, being treated that way by a sweet little girl in a cute little car!

My passenger / instructor, in reference to the driver of the BMW I terrorized.

Mmmmmuahahahaha!

There was a yellow S4 there that belongs to a guy who works at Pixar. The license plate number is FFFF00. Very nice.

Look for it if you're in the bay area. You can tell him the girl in the red GTI who figured out his license plate and terrorized his BMW-driving friend says "Hi".

My pretty red GTI just got its butt kicked by a pretty blue S4. At first I wondered how the hell the A4 next to me was accelerating so quickly, and then it finished with the ass whupping and flashed its S-tagged derrière at me.

Time to start saving up for that supercharger.

POW-er!

My GTI (Vrooooom!) got to play with an M3 (Mmmmm3!) up the hill on 92 today. It was fun, but I knew the M3 was just toying with my pretty red car. Thanks for sticking around and not totally leaving me in the dust, speedy M3.

Went from 50 to 95 MPH over about half the length of the climb. After the exit ramp I thought, wow, in my Civic I used to approach the hill going 75 or 80 and by the end of it I'd be in third gear going maybe 55. 55 on a good day.

Whoo for more horsies.

On a related pretty red car note, I went to the dealer and bought a couple oil filters this afternoon. The VW counter guy there was super cool. He even printed up a diagram for me of how everything fits together.

I'm gonna be a little grease monkey and change my oil and rotate my tires.

Car Car Car

I finally remembered to turn ESP off before racing someone off the line. It works sooo much better that way. No cutting of the engine 'cause the car thinks I'm sliding. Take that, lame-O poopiehead on Potrero this morning!

Freeway exits are cool. They allow you to get off and get away when the CHP officer on the other side of the road decides to come around for you.

I stopped at a light and saw smoke coming from the back of my car. It smelled like something was burning, too. The smell seemed to be following me so I pulled over, checked under my car, checked under the hood, and found nothing. Then the smell went away. Hey, I think that was the first time I've looked under the hood of my car by myself. Hrmm, that's kind of sad, isn't it?

A Damned Good Investment

My Valentine One kicks ass. Four hundred bucks? What a good deal! Yesterday on the drive back I passed someone on a climb. As I was going around the corner approaching the crest of the hill my V1 started bra-dapping at me. A bra-dap! A sure sign of CHP. I took a good 40 MPH off the speedometer and sure enough, as I finished rounding the corner and reached the top of the hill I saw a highway patrol car sitting there waiting to give me a ticket for a 6 month suspension of my license, a $1,700 fine, and two more points on my driving record. Actually, come to think of it, I bet the fine's gone up in the last two and a half years. Erf, that would have put a damper on, um, life.

Around a corner and over a hill. Good V1! *pet pet* Woof.

Car Fun / Car Nightmares

Last night on my drive home from Monterey I found a GTI to play with. It was just like my car, only silver. Blink blink, he said, let's go! When the road opened up, we went. And then a cop pulled onto the freeway and we had to stop playing. Dear Mr. Cop, please drive around with your radar on in the future so I can hear you coming. By the way, you make driving unfun. Poopiehead.

I made it past 110 before the cop sighting. What's my theoretical top speed? 139? 29 more to go!

• • •

Last night I dreamt that someone had replaced one of my wheels with the type you find on other GTIs. Yes, just one. The rear right one, to be exact. So in my dream I was standing there wondering why on earth someone would swap out just one wheel. Then I wondered whether I should just leave my car there so they can come back and swap the other three so I'd have a matching set. Then my dream ended. Roh.

Shiffft!

Monday night I was going to blog:

Viv + GTI + Valentine One = Danger!

But, I wrote about my game instead and forgot.

Last night I was reminded of the fact that I was shifting too early. What am I doing, shifting at 4,000 RPM? The power band starts at 4,000! Besides, there's a rev limiter on the car that prevents the engine from blowing up.

So then I thought ...
1. I'm not driving my car to its full potential.
2. Ew, I don't want to be like some other people I know who do just that.*
3. Ooh, you mean it's designed so that I can rev it really high?

Okay, so I actually thought 3 first, but you get the idea.

Shortly after the rev limiter discussion, I decided to see the thing in action. In case your wondering, my car tops out at 7,000 RPM. At least it does in 3rd gear. I wonder how fast I could go at 7,000 in 6th gear ...

Ooh ooh! (Major danger!)

* Dumb but necessary disclaimer to keep my readership happy. No, I'm not talking about everyone and anyone who does that, just certain individuals with Porches who, by the way, do NOT read this blog, so don't go around taking things personally and getting all bent out of shape about it, okay?

Rainy Night Fun

Hi. It's rainy out. I took the convoluted one hour route home. I encountered deer with eyes that glow blue. I tested out my car's EDL, ASR, and ESP. I think they're all supposed to do pretty much the same thing. After all, they're all hooked up to the same indicator light. Vroom vroom. I'm tired. I'm cold. I'm going to go to bed now. Bye.
