Party In Charo's Trunk

Several moons ago, Liz asked if I could set up her trunk with lighting like mine. I said yes and added it to my list of things to do after I finished school.

Just under a moon ago, I finished school. This weekend, I decided it was time. There's nothing like 3 days off to knock a project off the list!

First order of business: pick up cold cathodes. Seemed easy enough. I figured I'd go to Fry's and take my pick of their various colors and sizes. Off I went to Fry's. I looked and looked, and finally asked an employee where they were. I was told they no longer stocked them. What?

I made pit stops at Radio Shack and Pep Boys on the way home from Fry's. Radio Shack had nothing (as expected), and Pep Boys had neon (overpriced and not what I wanted).

On Saturday, Aaron and I went to Action Computer in Sunnyvale. Nothing. We tried HSC. Also nothing. We went to a different Fry's, thinking that perhaps the Sunnyvale one was just lame. Also nothing. Sigh.

On Sunday, we tried Central Computer in Newark. They had two types of cold cathodes: blue and RGB. RGB? Is that white? It looked white. I asked the salesperson whether they had white. "RGB is white," he replied. I pointed out that the little color indicator labels on the packages listed white, and that this was not it. "It's white when we install it," he said. Okay, then. I bought two.

An hour later, we drove by a Central Computers on Stevens Creek, just down the street from Liz's house. Same chain? Yes. Gah.

This afternoon, install time! Everything went *mostly* as planned. I got all the wiring hooked up, connected the juice, and...

RGB. Just like the box said. Red, green, and blue. Like this, along the length of the tube:

rgb.gif

WTF? That is definitely not white.

Since white was out of stock, I decided to just leave the RGBs in there and swap them out when white ones became available. Off I went. Night fell. And then, when I returned home:

Liz2D2: It *is* white!
Liz2D2: And party
Liz2D2: All at the same time
SoopahViv: what?!
SoopahViv: so it looks a party but you get white light to use?
Liz2D2: Yes!
SoopahViv: whoa
SoopahViv: cool

I haven't seen it in the dark yet, but I bet it looks like a rave in there.

Because I Don't Do This Often Enough

Me, with a soldering iron:

Ow, that's hot!

OW, that's HOT!

Owww! WHY DO I KEEP DOING THAT?!

Fortunately, it's cold out, and my fingers were cold enough that the repeat searings didn't do much damage.

On the upside, my foglights are working again, although in retrospect it would probably have been easier if I'd just tracked down a replacement plug-in fused relay instead of all the rewiring I had to do to get a relay plus inline fuse in there. And here I thought I was taking the lazy route by using what was (mostly) onhand. Oh, and of course, since I suck at soldering (see title), my fogs now run on 2x frankenwiring (2x because I did the original wiring too).

But whatever, at least things are lookin' good on the outside again. ;)

Finally, Functional Foglights!

I finally replaced the burned bulb in my foglights. I should have done it a few months ago, but I was holding out for a ricey IS300-like setup. I finally shelled out for some crystal ion yellow PIAAs earlier this month (I had plans for ricey blueish headlight and marker bulbs, too), but when I installed them I found that their yellows were slightly off from each other.

Even if they'd matched, the end result wasn't nearly as sexy as I'd imagined, so yesterday I went to Pep Boys and picked up some regular H3s.

I took a couple pictures on my way home from school tonight. Click to turn the fogs on and off.

Mmm ... light.

I didn't edit the photos any, but I must admit that the difference wasn't really as great as it appears above. You can blame (or credit) my camera for that.

No More DRLs

Two dollars, two minutes, and bam! ... no more daytime running lights.

I never really minded them, and actually thought they were a pretty good idea, but if running DRLs means I have to replace my bulbs every 18 months, I think I can do without.

Philips Vision Plus H7 Review

A little under two years ago, I bought some (4) Philips Vision Plus H7 bulbs for my car. They were supposed to be the whitest and brightest filament bulbs available at 55W. I had to buy them from overseas, and they cost me a pretty penny.

At first, they were great. Yes, they were brighter. But it seems they burn out after 1.5-2 years. I had my Civic for 3 years and I never had to replace a bulb! Granted, the GTI has DRLs and I drive it a lot, but still, that is too short a lifespan for a bulb that costs ~$50 a pop.

My bigger gripe, however, is the rate at which they yellow. I replaced my driver's side bulb in August of last year. When I replaced my passenger's side bulb this morning, there was a very noticable difference between the white light coming from the pside bulb and the now-yellow light coming from the dside bulb. It hasn't even been half a year. Disappointing.

On the upside, I managed to swap the bulb in under 5 minutes. Woop!

When the next bulb burns I'm going ricey (krautey?). I'm switching to an all-PIAA setup: Xtreme White Plus headlights, PIAA Xtreme White side and front markers, and Ion Crystal fogs (they're yellow, like on IS300s!). Yum. And, uh, $$$. Boo.

Fogs! Done! Finally!

It was not, not, not not not supposed to take me 3 days to install my Micro DE lights. Nonetheless, they're done. Well, kinda. I'll go more into that later. Here's how it all went down ...

Friday

Started in on the project. Took the bumper off, which seemed scary at first, but was really no big deal once I got all the screws out. Right after I got that part done, Jesse arrived. (Thanks for helping, Jesse!) Drilled some holes into the bumper, which was also scary at first, but no big deal once I did the first one. When it came to installing the light housings into the new grills, though, we ran into some strange fitment issues. Screw that, we called it a day and had sushi instead.

The bumper slept in my living room that night. There wasn't room for it in the garage. Okay, I could have made room, but I thought it'd be funny to have a picture of it inside.

Saturday

Woke up on Saturday and got back to work. Decided to get the wiring done. After all, a good fit is worthless if the lights don't light up. I was pretty excited about this part, since I've been holding onto an OEM VW headlight switch with an extra control for fogs for two years now. Yes, I've wanted these fogs for my car since I bought it. *grin*

Ran the wires to their external fog locations, mounted the central harness thinger inside the engine bay, ran the control wire through the firewall, soldered it to the VW patch cable, plugged the patch end into the empty fog position in the harness, replaced my switch with the near-identical new switch, hooked it up to the battery, plugged the fogs into their respective harnesses, turned it all on, and ... lights! Yes! Lights!

I thought I was close, but nooo, ended up having more fitment issues, this time with the back of the light housings. Tow hook mount on the passenger's side, upper horn bolt head on the driver's side. Managed to get around the tow hook mount by readjusting the light. As for the upper horn bolt, well, there was much bracket bending, some cursing, and, finally, defeat, and plans to visit Home Depot the next morning.

Sunday (the next morning)

Home Depot: world's smallest metric screw selection. Bought what I thought would work, then realized when I got home that the pitch was wrong. I'd had enough, so I decided just to get rid of the upper horn for now. I'll take my time hunting down a replacement flat head machine screw and reinstall the horn when I do. I've still got the lower horn, anyhow.

Everything was cake after that. Adjusted the lights, tightened everything up, and took a final picture. I'll write up a GTI page for this someday, pictures and all. Maybe I'll take more pictures when I remount my upper horn. I'll try to get a good pic of the car later today.

Later Today (pic taken at 9:11 PM)

fog_lights.jpg

It's amazing what some wet pavement and camera tweaks will do for your headlights.

Oh, and I test tooted my horn. My car currently sounds like a little Japanese car. Maybe I should take the lower horn out too and install an air horn. A GTI with semi-truck sound! That would be sooo cool.

Thank You, Rapid Parts

Just when I was about to give up hope for a follow-up, I got a phone call from Rapid Parts about my bent washer. They're going to send me some replacements. I hope this takes care of it.

Maybe I'll install my DEs this weekend.

Can't Anyone Get It Right?

Look a good look at my ss brake lines today. The lines themselves appear to be fine, but what's with this washer?

bent_washer.jpg

The Micro DEs box wasn't entirely pristine, either. Original packing? Try hand-bubble-wrapped parts. At least everything's new, and most of the parts are there. Only missing a few zipties, and I think I can manage to supply my own.

The big shops get it wrong, the little shops get it wrong. Sheesh.

Speaking of big shops getting it wrong, I think the replacement rings Tire Rack sent me finally fit. Phew, and huh? *scratches head* Whatever, I'll take it. I now need to divert my follow-up phone call energies to Rapid Parts.

Damned Backorder

SoopahViv: ruhroh
P---B-----: ?
SoopahViv: i found another store with dot approved ss lines
SoopahViv: for 10 cheaper
SoopahViv: and ...
SoopahViv: they have the fog lamps i want
SoopahViv: for 40 cheaper than anywhere else
P---B-----: :)
SoopahViv: and
SoopahViv: no tax
SoopahViv: daaaah!
P---B-----: buy! buy! buy!

So I'm buy buy buying, because I've wanted the Hella Micro DE lights since I bought my car almost 2 years ago. I even have the OEM switch that lets me control the fogs separately.

Really, I could just go to Kragen, get regular DOT 4 brake fluid for under 10 bucks, bleed my brakes, and be done with it.

But where's the fun in that?

Centering Ring Confusion

I compared my 6 centering rings last night. Turns out the ones they sent me are the same as the ones that fit properly around up front.

My OEM wheels are front-rear interchangable (actually, all 4 are identical). In theory, that means I should need only one type of centering ring. In theory, that also means that if a centering ring fits on the front, it should also fit on the rear.

I measured the inner diameters of both the centering ring that fits on my rear hub and the ones they sent me. 56 mm and 56 mm.

Perhaps the one that wouldn't fit is defective?

Looks like I have some more measuring to do.

In other news, my stainless steel brake lines are on backorder until late November / early December. I'm not going to wait that long to put my wheels on. I guess that means wheel wrenching sooner than I thought.

I think it's funny that I refuse to type "ss brake lines", and opt to spell everything out even though I know you'd all know that that means "stainless steel brake lines" and not "Nazi brake lines".

Nazi brake lines. Um, right.

Stainless Steel Sparkin'

A glimpse at part of my ECS Tuning checkout page just now:

ecs_checkout.gif

Line item 1: Standard 40,000 maintenance. Amazingly, people seem to like the OEM spark plugs the best. I just wish they weren't so expensive.

Line item 2: Mmm ... racing brake fluid. Overkill, yes.

Line item 3: Droooool ... stainless steel brake lines. Definitely overkill.

Wow, I really am salivating at that.

I'll be done with my 40,000 mile service after the spark plugs and brake fluid flush. But gosh, how much money did that cost me in total? More than I'll dare to calculate.

I know my spending habits pretty well. Was I right, or was I right?

Car Blurb 1: Wrong Road Wrong Time

Today, at 2-something in the afternoon, heading east on the San Mateo Bridge, I realized it was Cal-UCLA football day. Two years ago, this very Saturday, my Civic got totalled at the 880 interchange on east 92, soon after the SMB, on our way to the Cal-UCLA game. I had a moment of, "Oh no, I wasn't going to drive this route today." Let's just say I drove very conservatively the rest of the trip. Made it to my destinations and back in one piece. Phew!

Car Blurb 2: What Did You Say?

Another downside to the new suspension setup: increased road noise. Makes it hard to carry on a conversation when the roads are rough.

But the cornering and drop make it all worth it. ;)

Liquid Electrical PROtecTOE

I bought some liquid electrical tape today to seal off the top of my ghetto experimental now-stubby formerly extra-long extra OEM radio antenna.

I looked at the bottle, and it reminded me of PROtecTOE.

I opened the bottle took a sniff, and it smelled like PROtecTOE plus acetone. I bet the acetone's just so the stuff will dry in 5 minutes. PROtecTOE takes 12 hours. They both do pretty much the same thing: seal against moisture.

See, look, they're the same! My bottle of PROtecTOE's just a little old, that's all:

This means that if you ever need a dab of liquid electrical tape and have 12 hours to spare, you could probably use PROtecTOE. I wonder, if I ever need to protect my skate toes and have only 5 minutes, could I use liquid electrical tape?

My Car The Seductive Money Pit

As I was ordering oil filters for my car today, I realized I'm due for my 40,000 service after this upcoming oil change / discretionary tire rotation quickie. The 40,000 is a big deal for my car. I haven't had anyone take a really good look at my car since I bought it ('cause then they'd have to touch it, eek), so I'm thinking this is a good one for me to bring it in for service.

My car will not be going to a dealership for its 40,000 mile celebration. I've taken my car to a dealership all of one time (for a recall installation), and they scratched my hood. I'd even done research beforehand, and this was supposed to be the "best" dealership in the Bay Area. Sheesh.

That leaves me with a small handful of VW tuning shops in the area. I'm thinking I'll either take it to New Dimensions (way South of me) or Tomas Sport Tuning (way Northeast of me).

But if I'm going to take it to a tuning shop, I really should get coilovers while I'm there. I mean, it's more convenient that way, right?

And it's about time for new tires. I should get that done then, too.

And if I'm going to get new tires, I might as well slap 'em on new wheels.

And if I'm going to get new wheels, I should get a big brake kit.

And if I get a big brake kit, I should paint the calipers red.

So exactly how much is my 40,000 mile service going to cost me?

Maybe I should just take it to the stealership. It'll be cheaper.

Crazy Car Mommy

When I got out of my car after lunch it sat there in the parking lot looking all shiny and pretty, and was doing the whole "I'm a good car" thing because it had just blown away the stupid guy who cut me off a couple blocks back. All of a sudden I felt bad. So I said to it, "I'm sorry for not buying you a cold air intake this morning. I've been a bad car mommy lately." I thought to myself, how lucky am I to have such a great car in my life?

And then I realized I was crazy.

Cars and Bikes and Houses and Relatives and Stuff

My car doesn't feel fast to me anymore. All of a sudden I feel like it's a waste of money to buy things for it. I passed up a the $220 CAI I wanted even at $130 this morning 'cause I thought, why spend money when it's only gonna give me a few more horses? What will a few horses do for my car relative to how fast my bike is? It'll make my car sound meaner, sure, but you know what? The bike sounds 5 times meaner, and that's with the stock exhaust. Wait until I put the Yosh pipes back on! The incremental improvements are just not worth the massive amounts of money I have to spend to upgrade. Heck, for the money I'd save on my car I could be riding around on something better ...

So there. Maybe a CAI someday 'cause they're relatively cheap, but no turbo, no fifteen hundred dollar suspension, no thousand dollar rims. Not until I have money coming out of my ears, at least. On the turbo note, there's a company out there that can slap a twin turbo on my 24v for a total of 490 horses. Tempting, yes.

On this slightly more responsible spending note, there's a part of me that says to quit spending money on things that go vroom, 'cause there's no way in hell I'll ever vroom my way into owning a house.

On the other hand, you can sleep in a car but you can't drive a house.

Or, I could suck it up and live in my aunt's basement for free and save myself a grand a month. That is, until my shrink fees start adding up. I think they would soon run me well over what I'm currently paying for rent.

Oh, but free rent. Very tempting. More tempting than a 490 horsepower twin turbo 24v VR6 engine in my little red car.

Health insurance covers therapy, right?

Weekend Recap

Okay, now that my hockey game post is out of the way, time to do the weekend review. I feel like I did a lot, not even counting the hockey game. Here goes.

Friday night, I installed my white cold cathodes. All the interior lighting in my car is pure white now. LEDs in the cabin and two glowing tubes of crisp white light in the trunk. I'll take a picture sometime soon and post it so you guys can compare with the red ones.

I am now a solder queen. Mainly because I kept running into technical difficulties and had to reroute a whole bunch of stuff. Yes, I know there's something grammatically wrong with that last sentence.

Post install, Doug and I went to see Kill Bill. It sucked.

Saturday I went to Doug's friend's wedding. It was at a church. It was at a Catholic church. There was a lot of prayer. I couldn't help but think about how cultlike it all was. I took notes on what not to do at my wedding. No chanting, no prayer.

Saturday night, bowling! My right forearm is sore today. It lasted me about 2 games, and then I started bowling nothing but gutterballs. Bowled well enough to win dessert, though. Black Forest Dream in a waffle bowl. Yeah! It was probably about 3,000 calories. Not good for the six-pack, but Doug had a big thing of ice cream, too, so that wasn't too much of a setback.

Went for a ride down to Pescadero today. 'Twas fun! No super eek moments, thank goodness. Ran out of gas on my bike on the way down. That was certainly interesting. The stupid fuel switch is way too hard to turn on my bike. Had to pull over to switch to reserve. I'm gonna have to see if I can fix that. That and about 5 other things on my bike. So much to do!

Finally got tickets and made reservations for CES in January. Gonna catch the naked Cirque du Soleil show while we're there, too. Okay, not naked ... but close. Near-naked people doing cool stuff. Whoo.

CAI vs. CAI

Okay, after a whole weekend of having things to blog but not being motivated enough to actually post anything I'm back. Hi.

I have a dilemma. Which CAI to get? I'm debating between a molded cross link polyurethane one from EVO MS and a carbon fiber one from Carbonio. The Carbonio costs about 40 dollars more. It'll look cooler, but it's under the hood, so who's gonna see? How much less heat does carbon fiber conduct relative to mcl polyurethane? 40 bucks worth? Hrmm ...

Schawaaay!

WhoO! Lovin' my new sway bar. Bye bye understeering, hellooo flatter tighter corners. It actually takes a little bit of getting used to. I have to learn to turn the wheel less. Ha!

Can't wait to try this out on the track tomorrow.

So those technical difficulties I ran into, I had to flip the mounting of some rubber dampener piece on my axle beam 'cause the bolts were grinding into the side of the sway bar. Many pets on the head for Doug, who pointed this out and noted that there was a symmetrical set of holes on the other side of the beam I could mount the dampener through instead. Still need to repaint the now-exposed sway bar metal.

The other thing was, the sway bar clamps are designed to clamp on to the axle beam so tightly I had a hell of a time getting them into place. More pets on the head for Doug, who helped me pry the thing into place so I could get the clamps on properly.

I also had some trouble loosening a couple bolts. I thought they were stuck. Turns out I just wasn't using the right tool. More leverage! I forget that car parts are all secure and stuff. I suppose that's a good thing, huh?

Here it is, in all of its stiffening glory!

Posting some blog props for the folks at Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley. I picked up a Neuspeed 28mm rear sway bar for my car there this morning. Not only are they one of the few places around here to stock it, they gave me a great price on it, too. That and some installation tips when I told them I was doing it myself. I got to ask a bunch of other questions about things I want to do to my car, and when I was on my way out they gave me a free T-shirt.

I know, it's free advertising for them, but I'm all for supporting the local VW performance shops.

Clean, Clean, And Clean

Whoo! Happy car! It got a much needed warshin' this afternoon. Finally finished the rubbing compound pass of my door scrape fix, too. Rubbed out a few other scratches while I was at it. Also gave it its 15,000 mile oil change. Mobil 1 0W-40. Man, I feed my car better than I feed myself. I'm sitting here eating four day old cow. "Moo!", says I. "Vroom!", says my car. Yes, my car is worth eating left over leftovers for. After all, the cost of a nice meal buys me a case of damned good motor oil. Two nice meals and I'll make up for the ramps I bought, too.

The bestest thing (and ironically the fastest thing) about today is, my car now has cool new bumper markers. Clear cover with orange bulbs instead of orange cover with not-so-super white bulbs. They took all of 10 minutes to swap out, and that's including time to take pictures of everything. No more orange light covers on my red car! Fashion faux pas, you know.

Pictures of the light swap for your viewing pleasure sometime in the near future, I hope.

A Damned Good Investment

My Valentine One kicks ass. Four hundred bucks? What a good deal! Yesterday on the drive back I passed someone on a climb. As I was going around the corner approaching the crest of the hill my V1 started bra-dapping at me. A bra-dap! A sure sign of CHP. I took a good 40 MPH off the speedometer and sure enough, as I finished rounding the corner and reached the top of the hill I saw a highway patrol car sitting there waiting to give me a ticket for a 6 month suspension of my license, a $1,700 fine, and two more points on my driving record. Actually, come to think of it, I bet the fine's gone up in the last two and a half years. Erf, that would have put a damper on, um, life.

Around a corner and over a hill. Good V1! *pet pet* Woof.
