It Seems Weird To Be Pleased With Starbucks

Went to Starbucks for the first time in a couple months this morning. It was already pretty warm out when I arrived, so I decided to give their new Vivanno a try. Banana chocolate, with a shot of espresso. 270 calories with 6 grams of fiber and 21 grams of protein. Not bad! Tasted pretty good, too.

While their ridiculously cheery and helpful baristas perpared my drink, I browsed a few of their pamphlets at the condiment bar and found one with detailed nutritional information for what looked to be all of their drinks. I was pleased. Jamba needs to publish a portable one of those.

And finally, I left with a "Treat Receipt", which is essentially a receipt with a stamp on it that says, "Bring this in after 2 p.m. today and get any grande cold drink for just $2 (plus tax)." At first, I thought it was just a clever ploy to get people to consume more Starbucks (which it is), but then I thought, you know, I just might come back before my game this evening...

Happy Knees!

La la, rode 35.3 miles today and not a peep from either of my knees. They felt great, and even asked for 50 miles. Too bad my legs felt like ass. That probably had something to do with the dim sum I ate before the ride; it left my stomach feeling grumpy, and when the stomach is grumpy, the rest of the body usually follows. Nonetheless, we did consider going for the half century toward the end of the ride. Although I figured I could probably squeeze another 15 miles out of my legs, we didn't have enough sun left to cover that distance. Just as well; I'd eaten half an energy bar during the ride and my stomach wasn't liking it. We picked up some cheese at Andronico's and headed home.

Good news! I set a new weekly distance record: 72.4 miles. It was actually pretty easy, since I commuted by bike to and from Milpitas on Monday, which started my week off with 26 miles. Too bad I'm losing my bike commute starting next week; San Ramon is too far to ride. (At least for now...)

When I got home, I treated myself with some recovery Ovaltine. I picked some up today on a rare visit to 99 Ranch. The jar's got Chinese characters on it and everything. Awh wah teen, mmm goy!

Lazy Workplace Coffee Drinkers

At work, I drink about one cup of coffee a day. Given that, it seems disproportionate that I brew, on average, three gallons of the stuff in a week. Why? Because usually when I go to get coffee there's none left.

Whatever. More fresh coffee for me.

Drive-Through Starbucks

On my way into school today, I stopped by the Starbucks on California Circle for a latte. There was no line inside, but because I'd never been through a Starbucks drive-through, I stayed in my car and spent 10 minutes waiting behind 4 cars.

It was worth it. Drive-through lattes taste better.

Really, they do.

Peanut Milk

They had a new beverage in the company cafeteria today.

peanut_milk.jpg

Peanut milk! I love anything with peanuts! I bought one.

I looked at the bottle. "Signs & Wonders"? I figured it was some new agey thing.

It had a web address on the back: www.peanutmilk.net

"We acknowledge God Almighty as the Head of this company."

Wow.

"For more information, please visit: www.billygraham.org, www.bible.com"

Double wow.

Thanks to God Almighty, this drink has been blessed with the power to cure hangovers, migranes, crucified hands, boost sexual energy, and even make hair grow.

I took a couple sips and decided I didn't like it, but Vinny drank half the bottle. I will monitor him for changes. If he comes in energetically glowing tomorrow, I'll go buy myself a case and chug it.

Me, At McD's?!

Stopped by McDonald's for a drink after EWH today. I ordered a large soda, $1.69 on their menu. The guy behind the counter asked if I'd like the Super Size soda on their Dollar Menu instead. I ended up with an extra large for $1.07. I don't understand fast food pricing sometimes. Nonetheless, thanks McD's counter guy!

The other nice thing about getting a drink at McDonald's is the fact that they carry Light Minute Maid Lemonade now, which means I can make calorie free teamonade. Oh, how I love teamonade. 32 ounces of it, no less!

Yes, I'm lovin' it.

Teafee

I feel sleep deprived terrible today. I don't think caffeine does anything for me, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to consume a lot of it ... just in case it does. "What'll it be?" I thought, "Coffee or tea?" Then I remembered Jennie's post on the topic and our subsequent comment exchange about trying a coffee/tea blend.

I went downstairs, steeped a standard teabag in 4 ounces of hot water, added another 4 ounces or so of coffee, 2 packets of sugar, and, since there was no fatty dairy left, a splash of 2% milk.

It tastes like ... coffee plus tea? Nothing special. It's just funny flavored tea with a mostly coffee aftertaste. I don't think I like it any more or less than either one alone.

What I really need is to go for a walk, perhaps to the nearby gas station, where I can pick up some chocolate. Mmm ... chocolate.

Tournament Calorie Quandry

A lot of you know that I can't eat much solid food before I exercise (and especially before I play hockey). My preferred food is a Jamba Juice 60-90 minutes before gametime. Chocolate pudding 30 minutes prior is good, too.

But in Las Vegas, It's all buffets, right?

Right.

I looked to see if there were any Jamba Juices near the ice rink ...

SoopahViv: uhhh
SoopahViv: the closest jamba juice to the ice center is
SoopahViv: 13 miles away
SoopahViv: okay forget that

More searching ...

SoopahViv: the closest smoothie is 3 miles away
SoopahViv: maybe i'll just go to one of those frozen margarita bars
SoopahViv: those are kinda like smoothies right?
SoopahViv: and they're everywhere!

Hrmm, probably not a good idea. Perhaps I'll bring some chocolate pudding packs with me. I love how they're so artificial that they don't need refrigeration.

Googles "pudding packs" ...

Ooh! Aseptic pudding packs! Just what I need!

Puddings are formulated without preservatives in six flavors.

Even better! Now I just need to go find some, so I can be all rad like that cow on the box!

Chantico

Sounds like a good name for an R&B artist, huh?

Nope, it's Starbucks's new dessert drink. It's a super rich hot chocolate with a fancy name.

I wanted to try one, until I found out its caloric content: 390 calories and 21 grams of fat ... per 6 ounce cup.

Here's a good quote from a USA Today article: This should be a very occasional treat — like maybe on your 100th birthday.

Now if you'll excuse me I have a bowl of hamster feed yogurt to finish.

To my coffee snob reader (you know who you are): *$s is not meant to be consumed as espresso. The "shots" (yes, they really do need the quotes now that shot pulling is completely automated in their stores) are just additional flavoring for your frou frou drink.

If you wondering whether *you* are my coffee snob reader, you're probably not. If you were, you wouldn't be wondering.

Now, let's play a game. From the *$glyphics on the cup, what did I order?

Mocha In The Morning!

Got in early and used the company espresso machine for the first time today. Not too shabby! I'm having some milk issues, though. I'll either have to bring in my own soymilk or go mocha here. That, plus the milk foaming pitcher (which is just a tad too large for the machine) lives on top of the espresso machine and gets hot, which, as all of us latte junkies know, is not conducive to high foam yield.

First drinkable coffee, now fresh espresso drinks. Dangerous.

Gym Blurb 1: Someplace New!

Went to a new 24h Fitness today! Doug the runner and Viv the gym rat both wanted to do their usual workouts, so we decided to pick a gym that Doug the runner could run to and meet up with Viv the gym rat at the end of her session. I'd wanted to check out the Pacifica gym (to be referred to as the Pac24hF from now on) for a while, and finally got to do so today. It's small, but nice! Waaay nicer than the stuffy Ocean gym (to be referred to as the Ocean24hF from now on, but I don't plan on going back so it doesn't really matter). I think it's time for a gym swap. The locker room and showers at the Pac24hF are nice, too. It may well become my pre-work hangout come March.

Gym Blurb 2: Small World

I ran into someone from almost 5 years ago at the gym today. I was her biochem tutor for a summer course through UC Extension. The last time I saw her she was studying for finals and I was about a week into my new job. How fitting that I run into her again a week away from leaving that same job. She's had quite a work history: paramedic, firefighter, police officer, and now, if things go as planned, nurse/physician's assistant. She's just finished up school and is job hunting. I'm surprised I didn't run into her sooner, as she's a bit of a gym rat herself.

Gym Blurb 3: Chocolate Cherry Jamba Reward

I've been meaning to try the new Chocolate Covered Cherry smoothie at Jamba Juice for about a week now. I finally got one today! My favorite Jamba Juice special yet. I hope they turn it into a regular item when cherry month is over.

Spill Prone

I have been spilling things left and right this week! Yesterday I spilled water all over my side desk. I soaked that up with a T-shirt that happened to be lying nearby. This morning I spilled coffee off the edge of my desk just in front of my keyboard. Just now, I spilled water from the exact same spot! I did not fare so well this last time; I got water alllll over my pants. Fortunately, I have my thermals with me (I'm on my motorcycle today) so I'm sitting around in those while my space heater works on drying my pants. And, of course, as I was cleaning up the water, I knocked over the cup again, spilling any and all of the liquid that managed to survived the first tip-over.

I think I may be setting a new personal clutz record this week.

How On Earth Does He Brew That?

You know that whole thing about better coffee and espresso over in Europe? Well, my German coworker has somehow figured out a way to make the office coffee machine brew up something stronger than espresso (and I'm not talking about the wimpy stuff that comes out of the new automated Starbucks machines). This morning, I admitted defeat, and diluted the brew for easier consumption. The final mix: 2 parts coffee, 3 parts hot water, 2 parts milk. I feel like such a wuss.

You Call This A Latte?!

Espresso drink standards just aren't as high outside of the Bay Area. After finally hunting down a coffee shop on the Strip with a manual espresso machine (mainly Doug's doing, though I certainly prefer a manually prepared drink over an automatically prepared one), I watched in horror as the Seattle's Best barista* steamed my milk in ... my paper coffee cup. Then, when she realized there wasn't enough milk in my cup even after adding the shot, she steamed a bit more in a pitcher and topped it off. Unbelievable!

Tea Delicacies

So I'm drinking my tea in a tall glass. I see what I think is a bit of tea leaf floating at the top. It's the only bit of debris in my tea. It's kind of ant sized. I still think it's a tea leaf, but I try to get a better look at it anyway. I move it into the light. Lo and behold the bit of tea leaf has legs ... six of them! Poor little dude. He must have been the glass when I poured the tea in.

I was 70% done with the tea when I noticed him. I somehow got him stuck to the side of the glass a few sips later. No extra protein for me.

Sick Of Peanut Butter?!

Peanut butter just doesn't do it for me anymore. I think I've eaten too much of it lately or something. Remember those peanut butter and honey bagels I used to love so much? The ones I had to try very hard to cut down on? I've had two halves in the past month and neither of them really did anything for me.

Sick Of Diet Mountain Dew?!

I've drastically cut down on Diet Mountain Dew consumption, too. I used to drink at least one a day, and three or four on a typical grease monkey weekend day. Now, it's one or two a week, and one or two on a long grease monkey weekend day. They don't really do much for me anymore, either.

Sick of Mango Häagen-Dazs?!

Yes, even Mango Häagen-Dazs. I don't crave endless pints of it anymore.

Sick Of _____?!

What next? I'm scared.

This reminds me of a time when I was in sixth grade or so. I somehow lost interest in all my favorite foods for a couple weeks. I didn't want pizza, didn't want pasta, didn't even want McDonald's. I think my mom was scared for me, like I'm scared for me now.

Hi. It's Saturday. I'm drinking

Hi. It's Saturday. I'm drinking a Dos Equis.

Holy crap, a beer?! Yeah, I'll explain later.

Went for a 7 hour ride today. It was most awesome.

I dragged a toe. Cool because that means I turned pretty hard (for me). Not cool because I don't turn that hard yet and it just means I need to pull my feet back a bit on my footpegs.

I also somehow crossed the double yellow by a foot or so on a right turn. It was weird. Felt like the road disappeared for a moment. My guess is it was off camber, but that patch of road is long gone now so I dunno. Good news is, no cars, so my bike and I are intact.

Stopped for coffee, then lunch with coffee, then coffee again. Doug was well caffeinated today. I was too, I guess, but I don't really feel the effects of caffeine so maybe that doesn't count.

I'm feeling this beer, though. More on that later.

Got home and made turkey burgers using Ted's awesome beef burger recipe. Threw in some of Doug's awesome grill spice mix, too. They came out really well. Rad.

Okay, about the beer. After dinner I looked in the fridge and saw a bunch of beer left over from Doug's barbeque a few months back. Beer in Doug's fridge just sits there because neither of us drink. I saw a Tequiza and wondered aloud what it tasted like. Doug said, "You tried one last time, took two swigs, and said it was terrible." I didn't remember, so I pulled out a bottle, took three swigs, and once again declared it terrible.

I decided that since I was beer sampling I'd try the other stuff in the fridge too. Out came a bottle of Dos Equis, a bottle of Heineken, and a bottle of Anchor Steam. I took a few swigs of each of those, too.

And the verdicts. Heineken tastes like horse piss. Beer in general tastes like piss to me, but the Heineken was especially bad. Worse than the terrible Tequiza. The Anchor Steam was tolerable, but a bit too bitter for me. The Dos Equis, well, it was a lot like the Anchor Steam, but less bitter, and so I took the bottle with me to the computer.

And that's why I'm drinking a beer. I'm on sip number twenty and working on my fifth shade of red. 'Tis amusing.

When I order a latte (or coffee or cappucino or any hot beverage that comes in a paper cup with a sipping lid) and they put the lid on such that the part I sip from is right over the little crease in the paper cup. Are they trying to drip hot latte all over me? How much extra effort is it for them to look and turn their hand a few degrees before putting the lid on? Rarr. Um, I mean, mini-rarr.

Espresso Regression

So today I tried to make my first latte in over a month. It didn't go so well. I wound up with espresso and coffee grinds everywhere, and by everywhere I mean the counter, the floor, the inside of the sink, the outside of the sink, the dishrack, and the wall. Oh, and there's some on my shirt, too. My latte tasted like water, and that was after two freakin' tries. It was so bad I threw it out.

It kind of pisses me off that my latte making skills have regressed.

Okay, at this moment, it really pisses me off.

It pisses me off to be pissed off.

Quote of the Day

Boba has laxatives.

So said Teddio before running off to the bathroom.

• • •

Anyways22: i had a good poop

So the next time any of you are constipated, go get yourself a taro color icy from Tapioca Express. Taro color icy with big boba, because, as Teddio also said today, small boba are strange.

Thanks a lot, Teddio.

Peet's Latte

So I went to Peet's coffee in Belmont today to get some properly ground beans for espresso. After a ten minute wait with zero people in line and much unhappy yelling from the store manager (directed at the employees for abandoning the bean counter) I got my half pound of number two grind Arabian Mocha Java. I just made myself a wonderful lovely yummy vanilla soy latte. It's pretty, too, which led me to look for my digital camera, which only confirmed my two week old suspicion that I really have no idea where it is. I tend not to lose things, so I get feeling I "lost" my camera on purpose. That's pretty smart of me, to purposely lose my camera and not remember where I'd lost it so that I'd have an excuse to buy a smaller cooler nicer one.

Drat, I just found it.

Double drat, I'm done with my now formerly pretty vanilla soy latte.

Hrmph.

Rarr. I just found out

Rarr. I just found out that the Garuda grounds I bought from Peet's last weekend are too coarse for my espresso machine. I hate when people don't do their jobs right. Is it so hard to set the damned grinder to the little tab that says "espresso"? I don't want to have to drink all this Garuda in coffee form. I want my latté, dammit!

I remembered how to do an é without having to use character map. I'm so proud of me.

I can do a ü, too. See.

Perfect My Ass

I don't know if this is funny or lame, but as I was making my latte just now I lost the little tiny black rubber tip to my Krups patented Perfect Froth attachment. Lemme tell ya, that little tiny black rubber tip does a LOT in terms of making good foam. I searched the floor, I searched my clothes, I swept the floor, I looked under the oven, I looked under the fridge ... no little tiny black rubber tip. As I was finishing the last few gulps of what I thought would be my last perfectly frothed latte, I thought, "What if it fell into my cup? I'd better check before I gulp." Lo and behold, on my last mouthful of frothy latte joy I spat out a little tiny black rubber tip. Huzzah!

Tea Party Time

At my office, I can choose from the following caffeinated non-green teas:

British Blend
English Tea Time
English Breakfast Tea (Twinings)
English Breakfast Tea (Sir Thomas Lipton)
Earl Grey

Where are the plain old regular unsealed Lipton's tea bags?

I think the British have taken over our tea drawer.

Place of the Day

Q-Cup in San Mateo

Why? Because:

1. It's the place to go for fobs. Anytime you spend more than 5 minutes in that place I guarantee you will see some girly looking Chinese guy walk in. Not only that, but the fobby girls behind the counter will all fawn over him.

2. You can learn all about chinkiness there. Yes, that's a bad word. Don't any of you non-chinks out there dare say it because it's my word. Just like how the African-American students told all of us Chinese-American students at the racial harmony conference that nigger was their word and we weren't allowed to say it. I will personally see to it that you get an ass kicking if you do. Um, yeah, okay, I think I strayed off topic a bit there. Anyway, to learn about chinkiness, order a drink and be confusing so they mess it up. Then ask them to change it. They will try to recycle something in the process of "fixing" your order. I bet you a recycled boba they will.

Thank Goodness For Jamba

God my jaw hurts! My tongue hurts too. Owwie owwie owwie owwie owwie.

My mouth and stomach are pushing hard for a liquid diet today.

Tomorrow I will eat only Jamba Juice.

• • •

Wow, what if I were a pawn in some sort of Jamba Juice conspiracy? What if they're funding the industry that makes people hurt for smoothies? I bet you I can get a Jamba grant from them for grad school. Just gotta write the proper proposal ...

I know I make no sense and I would write more but certain readers would disapprove. Not of what I wrote but of what it means.

On the other hand, why do I care?

But I do. It's so stupid. It bugs me that I care. Dammit.

And now I'm straying off topic. Time to post and go to bed.

Goooood night everybody!

Three Things

Thing One: DAWABABAHI's computer is just as stressful and spastic as he is. In today's meeting its CD drive kept making whirling propeller noises even though he wasn't using it for anything.

Thing Two: I almost got run over by a swarm of little Asian women running out of the locker room at the gym about half an hour ago.

Thing Three: I'm drinking a can of Sparkling Yunker. It's supposed to be some sort of energy drink that's good for me. It's got St. John's Wort and royal jelly and green tea extract in it. Tastes like crap. And for some strange reason the can has a CA redemption value of 2.5¢. Huh.

Leaky Tea

Today I went to Una Mas for a big huge 32 oz. iced tea. I got into my car with it and midway into my 3 minute drive back to the office I noticed I had iced tea everywhere. I thought maybe the lid was loose and I was cornering too fast. No matter. It was unsweetened so I didn't really care. So then I got back to the office and set it down on my desk. I went off to help someone troubleshoot something for the ten thousandth time and when I came back there was a little pool of iced tea around the cup. My 32 ounces of iced tea were leaking! That's a lot of liquid. So I went and got a bunch of 12 oz. styrofoam cups and poured my iced tea into those instead.

I've never had so many cups of iced tea in front of me in my life!

Fun With Styrofoam

11:25:20 PM EDT

Here's something to try the next time you order a beverage on United:

- Ask for hot tea with a slice of lemon.
- Make sure the tea is hot.
- Make sure the lemon is at least a wedge, not just a slice.
- Squeeze as much of the lemon juice as you can into the tea.
- Drop the squeezed wedge in for good measure.
- Watch as your concoction eats through the cup.
- Drink and taste that styrofoam!

It's really neat. The last time I did that it actually ate through the cup. Remember, drink fast so you don't end up with hot styrofoam lemon tea on your lap!
