Smokiness Is Relative
I saw my neighbor riding home on his bicycle just now, and asked him whether the smoke bothered him.
"It's not bad," he replied, "It's not as smoky as China."
Well there you go. I'm just being a whiny American.
The whiny American in me says darn you, fires! I was going to ride Mt. Diablo this week, and now I'm not going to have anything to show for June.
Waah.

Push It
Went to Wednesday spin today 'cause my schedule's too crammed for midweek dirt. Worked much harder than usual, since I'm not spinning to keep my knees in shape anymore. I need to get faster and stronger, and the only way to do that is to push. Hard.
I have just under one month until the race. I'd better push harder.

That's how it should be.

Boredom Begets Mash
Went to spin class today as part of my efforts to keep my knees in riding shape for this coming weekend. I don't really like Monday spin class; the instructor is weak, and doesn't provide much of a challenge despite my usual tired legs from the weekend. Today, I pretty much did my own thing and mashed for most of the class. Another session on Wednesday, and then I'm off to Solvang for a half century on Saturday. I can't wait!

Mashochist
Today, during a particularly grueling part of spin class, resistance cranked up, mashing out of the saddle, the instructor said, "Let's go! We have a six minute climb ahead of us!" (Normal intervals usually last only a couple minutes in this class.)
I grinned. I grinned a truly happy yes-this-is-gonna-be-awesome grin.
Then I grinned more, because I surprised myself.

Mash-O-Rama
Lots of pedaling out of the saddle at spin class today. Pulled off a ten minute mash block. Sweet.
Pedaling out of the saddle is a *lot* easier on a spin bike than on a real bike. I'm thinking those ten minutes will translate into two out on the road.
Still, better than zero.

Spin Spin, Spin Harder
Went to lunch hour spin class today. I'd tried a spin class once before, but that was years ago, before I was in any sort of aerobic shape, and it made me want to die. Today's class went much better. I brought my cycling shoes, clipped in, and got a pretty good workout climbing imaginary hills. We did a lot of work standing, which was good because I tend not to spend much time out of the saddle on my real bikes -- it hurts! On the spin bike, I didn't fear bonking and falling over, so I just went with it. Push, push, push. Those bikes actually feel pretty good clipped in. I think I've found a good off-ice workout for rainy season. I'm hoping this will keep my knees in cycling shape so they don't hurt from overuse when outdoor riding weather returns in the spring. (Not that it's gone yet, but I know it won't be here forever.) Maybe I'll even be in good enough riding shape for Sea Otter next April...
Another note on the SR24hF: they provide workout and bath towels. While this is common for most gyms, it's almost unheard of at the 24hFs around these parts. Their showers are decent for a 24hF, too. I hope they manage to maintain the place over time. Or at least until I don't work in San Ramon anymore. ;)

Bonk Bonk
Pedaled home after work today and felt so tired mid-ride I thought I wasn't going to make it. Granted, there was a strong headwind and it was a little farther than usual, but when it hit I was three miles from home and totally drained. Drained, like I was after my ride last night. What's up? Am I not eating enough? Am I not eating the right things? Am I not eating at the right time? Is there something wrong with me unrelated to eating? (I can't imagine what that would be; it's all about eating.)

No Pedal?
I drove my car today for the first time all week so I could take my mountain bike out for a ride after work. It's been a crazy day, though, and despite the fact that it's not even 3 I'm pretty drained from being bombarded by 5 different projects and other unpleasantness. Looks like no two-wheelin' for me this evening.
Ironically, a ride home from work is exactly what I need right now to unwind.
I guess I'll go throw some weights around at the gym.

I Thought I Looked Like A Frequent Flyer
Went to Kaiser this evening for a last minute appointment with yet another doctor I've never met. He came into the exam room, took a look at me, and said, "Are you a cyclist?" I responded by showing him the cover of the magazine I was reading: Bicycling. He looked pleased, and beamed back, "You look like a cyclist!"
I do? Gah, I must have helmet head from my commute.

Sea Otter Classic 2007
After having our Saturday Sea Otter plans rained on, Aaron and I headed out early to squeeze in a short visit today instead. It meant having to get up at 7:30 on a Sunday, but it was well worth it.
Last year, we covered the event by foot, and spent a lot more time walking than anything else. This year, we smartened up and brought our bikes, which made getting around tons easier. We zipped from events to vendors to other events to open tracks and courses. We spent less time there than last year, but managed to do a lot more.
And what did we do?
We started off with a trip through the vendor area. Aaron checked out bike parts while I had a chat with some helmet cam folks. Then we headed over to watch the invitational dirt jump contest. People doing tricks in the air, always fun. I took some pictures and made a video. Hello, new camera!
We then headed over to watch some of the PRO/Semi-Pro Downhill finals. People bombing down hills, also fun. I took more pictures.
Aaron mentioned that he wanted to ride on the track, so we headed over there after a while. It looked like half the track was open for warmups and demos, so we pedaled on in. Not having driven Laguna Seca before, I wasn't sure where on the track we were, but when I reached a corner that seemed to drop off to nowhere, I had a pretty good idea. Aaron confirmed that I was indeed at the Corkscrew. The Corkscrew! How exciting! I rode down it, then back up, and, of course, took a bunch of pictures.
While we were on the track, I noticed a large number of super fit women riding by on their mountain bikes. As it turns out, they were warming up for the women's PRO/Elite Cross Country race. We made it to the starting area at just the right time, and I was able to get a video of the start.
After that, up the hill to the Dual Slalom course, an event which ended the day before, so it was open for riding. I was feeling hungry and tired by then, and given the fact that I was sick and had a hockey game in a few hours I didn't want to ride up the hill to reach the start. Aaron rode up and did the course while I ate a muffin and watched. Then he came back and insisted that I ride the course too, for "the experience". He was right; when else would I get to ride a competition dual slalom course? Up the hill I went, and down the course I came. Holy crap, that was scary! Scary, but fun. :)
My highlight of the day, however, was meeting the Sea Otter. I asked if it was THE Sea Otter, and it nodded yes. Oh, goodie!

Something Like Denial
Every time I see a cyclist ride by I find myself silently wondering at him, "Why don't your knees hurt?"
I really want to ride, but I'm a little scared to get on my bike. What if my knee starts hurting like it did the last time I rode? What if I can't even make it 4 miles to work without pain? I don't want to know if the answer is yes.

Hooray, Cycling Jerseys!
Even though I started mountain biking last April, I've been uncharacteristically holding off on buying bike jerseys. (Hold off on gear? Who am I?) At first, I figured I didn't need them. Eventually, I figured it wouldn't hurt to have some, but couldn't find anything cool, silly, and/or exciting enough. In addition, my choice of jerseys was limited, since I wanted only sleeveless jerseys. (The biker's tan from my shorts is bad enough; I don't want funny lines on my arms, too.) But with the addition of a road bike, I figured it was finally time to look the part.
I'd already deemed the jersey selection at REI and Sports Basement too boring, and those at local bike shops too small. Today, Aaron and I headed to the Pearl Izumi store at the Gilroy outlets. I tried on a few jerseys and selected two: a Lucky Charms jersey for the road and a Rocket Girl jersey for the mountain. Jersey silliness, woohoo!
I also tried on a bunch of clothing at various outlet stores. I'm in the market for some funky just-below-the-knee capris, and found a few with some cute patterns and stitching. Unfortunately, they all looked and felt funny on me, since it seems they were cut for people with big bellies and muscleless thighs. I also had trouble with shirts being too tight in the shoulder and too baggy around the waist. What the hell? I need to get out of shape to find something comfortable to wear? If anything, it should be the other way around to encourage people to get their asses off the couch!
Cycling gear fits me, at least. Silly jerseys and padded spandex shorts, thanks for being there for me.

Everything Is An Excuse To Buy Gear
My car is due for its 80,000 mile service. There's a VW stealership just down the street from where I live, but because of its reputation, my general distrust of stealerships, and the fact that they scratched my then-perfect hood when I took my car there for a factory recall a few years back, I decided to go somewhere else. My first choice was to take it to Wolfgang, whose shop was across the street from said stealership. Unfortunately, Wolfgang seems to have disappeared over the last year. After some time on the local forums, I decided on Bugformance in San Jose. One small problem: Bugformance is 13 miles away from work. The solution? My boingy bicycle! I was happy to have an excuse to ride (It's been far too cold and early evening dark and sometimes rainy lately, waah.), and also to shop for cold weather cycling gear.
This morning, I dropped my car off and tested out my new gear. The verdict? <3! The Sugoi tights rule. They fit perfectly, are super soft on the inside, and block enough wind to keep me warm while letting enough through to keep me from overheating. I also got new full-fingered gloves, which turned out to be lightly water resistant when the sky sprinkled on me. Okay, that sounds kind of gross. It wasn't yellow, okay?
Technically, I also got to try out some new socks that I bought a couple months ago. I like them, but not any more than my regular socks. What's so special about Coolmax? I can't tell the difference.
Some bad news: My left knee is killing me. After about 6 miles I started feeling pain in my knee, which got worse as I continued to ride. It's the same pain that I felt after diving on my trip last month. At least now I know it wasn't nitrogen bubbles, but what's wrong with my knee? Sadness.

Pie Powered Ride
After dinner last night I had four slices of pie: apple, pumpkin with fresh whipped cream, apple a la mode, and pumpkin, in that order. Thus, the title.
All week, I'd been checking the weather reports and looking forward to a Friday bicycle ride. When we got back into town this afternoon, we headed for Coyote Hills. After climbing a nearby bump (enough to get my out of shape heartrate to over 195 bpm, but a bump nonetheless), we headed out toward the water and reached the base of the Dumbarton Bridge. We wanted to loop our way back, but weren't sure about connecting trails. Since there was only an hour or so of sunlight left, we rode back the way we came.
Today's route in blue. We totalled somewhere between 10 and 11 miles. I had my HRM/odometer running, but partway through our ride it wiped itself out and I had to restart it. Boo.
This was my first chilly weather (yes, you laugh, readers back home) ride of the year. My legs were cold at first, but were okay once we started climbing the bump. My throat and ears, however, did not fare so well. Thanks to the wonders of genetics, my throat aches all the way down to the middle of my chest when I'm breathing hard in brisk air, and inside of my ears ache a good two inches down my neck when cold wind blows into them. The achy throat and ears were a nuisance, but didn't interfere too much with the ride.
Although the trail out by the water was long, boring, muddy, and at times stinky, there was lots to look at along the way. A pretty sky, still pools of water, makeshift mini piers, piles of driftwood, washed up buoys, pipes-o-rama, and an astonishing number of old tennis balls. There were lots of picture worthy items that I can't show you because I didn't bring my camera.
Not to fret! We shall return, and I'll be sure to take pictures next time.

Bike Blah Blah
Rode super slow into work today. I hadn't been on my bike in two weeks, hadn't ridden anywhere but to and from work in over a month, and am still feeling meh from being sick last week, so I guess I didn't expect any different. I caught about every red light on the way, which didn't help my time or pace any.
After my mind settled into its usual state of Central Expressway boredom, I started thinking about all the bills I paid last night, which included my share of the ER and ambulance bills from my Burning Man eye adventure last month. I calculated the total cost of my little accident. Ambulance + ER + taxi + eye doctor + steriod drops + random items such as me eye patch (ARRR!) = something just over $1,200. That's a good chunk of the cost of the road bike I want.
Good job, me.
Speaking of accidents, the doctor and physical therapy visits from my little mountain biking tumble earlier this year have themselves totalled a few hundred dollars. If I factor that in, the total cost of my accidents this year would have bought me exactly the bike I want, plus accessories.
Really good job, me.

Whoo, New Record!
I thought my legs would be tired after riding 25 (no, I mean 26!) miles yesterday, but this morning I pulled off my fastest ride to work yet. Total time for the 4.2 mile ride was 14:12. My bicycle commutes into work usually take 16:xx minutes, and I don't think I've ever broken 16:00.
That's nice and all, but I probably had some help from the stoplights (or, rather, golights). The number I can truly be happy about is the average speed: 18.1 MPH. My previous average speed record on this ride was 17 MPH, and my usual average speed is around 16 MPH, so this was a pretty decent jump.
I think what helped a lot is that my legs really did remember how to pedal in circles. Everything felt strong and smooth from the start. I hit the big ring just before the Wolfe overpass, and was able to stay there with the rear in the top two gears until I reached work.
And now that I've spent a few hours at work, my legs are starting to feel sore ...

25 Miles!
More than 25 miles, actually. 25.8, so perhaps I should round up and claim 26 miles.
26 miles!
Originally it was supposed to be only about 21 miles. I made abuncha (hooray, new word) bacon this morning and Aaron wanted some for his sandwich. I thought about riding the Monster over to drop some off, but then remembered that I'd wanted to try riding my bicycle out that way. I was hurting for some decent exercise (especially because school is wiping out both of my Maroon conditioning/placement sessions this month), so I went for the human powered option.
I wrote down the route, which involved several transitions between streets and trails, and headed out. On my way there I managed to miss a street and not realize it for 2+ miles, and probably wouldn't have noticed it for even longer if it hadn't been for the fact that the trail ended. Woops.
It took 15.1 miles, 66 minutes, and a few more not-as-badly-missed turns, but finally I arrived at Aaron's office. I downed a PowerBar, a couple bites of a turkey sandwich (fortified with bacon!), a lot of water, and a small iced coffee. Then I headed back toward home.
The ride home was much more straightforward. I made it in just over 46 minutes, after 10.7 miles. I could tell from my heartrate that I was tired, though. 11 minutes into my ride my heartrate rose above 180 bpm and stayed between 180 and 190 for the rest of the way home, with a peak at 196 going up the Wolfe overpass. It didn't dip like it usually does at stoplights, either. Strangely, even though my heartrate was pegged at numbers usually reserved for climbs, I felt only a little tired.
One thing I thought was really cool is that my legs finally got the hang of pedalling in circles without supervision after about 5 miles. My ride to work is only 4 miles, so my body never gets the chance to get into a groove. It was really nice not having to think about how I was pedalling. Thank you, legs, for finally figuring it out. Will you remember to do that during miles 1 through 5 of our next ride?

Mmm ... Data
Finally, everything is hooked up and working! I got my first heart rate, speed, cadence, and altitude dataset on my ride into work today. Check out the graph!
The two big heart rate/speed dips are stoplights. The mini-ascent accompanied by the decrease in speed is the Wolfe overpass. The last spike in heart rate at the end is from bunny hopping the speed bumps in the parking lot at work.
As for why I always felt like riding home was all uphill, it looks like it really is! Don't mind the negative absolute altitude numbers; I zeroed the altimeter in my 2nd floor apartment. ;)
I <3 data.

Longest Ride Yet
Since my only exercise all last 3-day week was coughing, I decided to go for a ride yesterday. It was super hot out, and the thought of climbing sunny dirt hill after sunny dirt hill at 3 MPH made me ugh, so I opted for a mostly road ride for a little more breeze.
The route: Aaron's house to Alum Rock Park, up through the park to the visitor's center, back to the entrance (with a small detour), and back to the house. A little over 18.5 miles and just over 87 minutes of saddle time. Not too shabby!
I was pretty tired after the ride, but I feel fine this morning. Good to go for hockey tonight! Huzzah!

Riding my bicycle between work and the gym seems to be a great way to save gas, burn a few extra calories, and eliminate my usual snoring boring warmup on the elliptical. Plus, with my new curb-hopping skillz (LOL!) I can cut through parking lot barriers on the ride back and return to work in just about the same amount of time as it takes in my car.
I think this just might stick ...

Little Commute Projects
The rain is gone! Hooray! I got to ride my boingcycle into work today.
Surprisingly, I didn't boing the entire way. Not until I reached the little landing by the door at work, at least. I was riding hard to see how fast I could make it into the office. I came close to the old record, but didn't quite make it. No matter, total time is stoplight dependent anyway.
What does matter is that I made it up the overpass on Wolfe in the highest gear yet. This time, there were no road bikers around to ruin my silly little moment of commute glory. I ruuule! Yeah! I ruuule over the, uh, me from the last time I rode up this cushy little hill!
It was probably the pedals.
Boing. :)

Clipless! YEAH!
I'd been itching to get on my clipless pedals since my shoes arrived last Friday, and yesterday was finally time. Aaron came over, installed the cleats, gave me a brief tutorial on how to click in and out, and took me to the nearby park with the little grassy hills for some practice, flopping, and cleat adjustment.
This is probably a good time to explain to people who are confused by the term "clipless" that clipless pedals are those which you clip in and out of. Yeah, duh, right? ;)
Okay, back to the story ...
I made it to the park without trouble and we headed onto the grass, where Aaron proceeded to cut in front of me a couple times in an attempt to make me flop, er, I mean, stop. Actually, I did stop, and even remembered to clip out. Yaaay.
Then I headed for the little grassy hills, which I purposely approached in too high a gear, and when I ran out of speed mid-hill I clipped out. Yaaay again. I downshifted a bit, picked up the rear of the bike, and spun the wheel with my attached foot. Then I tried to get going again, and discovered after one downstroke that I was still in too high a gear. Too late! My weight was already transferred to the foot on the pedal, and I felt myself start to fall ...
It was the coolest fall ever. I rolled onto my right side and continued onto my back. My bike, still attached to my right foot, flipped upside-down over me. My foot clipped out of the pedal halfway through the roll, my bike kept going, and when everything came to a stop I was on my back with my bike lying to my left.
I wish I had it on video.
Aaron missed it, too, so you'll just have to take my word regarding its coolest fall ever-ness.
I tried another uphill start and flopped left right after that. It wasn't nearly as cool.
After that we spent some time adjusting the cleats on my shoes. The new setup feels great! I love being able to pedal in a circle. And my hamstrings will finally get a workout when I ride.
But the best thing about the pedals is that boing has now become BOING. In fact, I was so busy BOINGING all the way back to my garage that when I got there I almost forgot to clip out. I saved myself as I started to fall over. Phew!
Fast forward to today, which, by the way, is Bike to Work Day. On my way into work, I stopped by one of our other buildings to pick up some BtWD goodies, then headed back out toward my building. There were 4 parking lot speedbumps on the way, and with my newfound BOING I cleared them all cleanly with both wheels. I love these pedals.
Have I mentioned I love these pedals? I love these pedals.
On a boing-related note, I played around with lifting the front end of the bike in the final stretch to the door. I usually get somewhere between 3-6 inches. Today, I got over 12 inches. I don't know if that has to do with the pedals or my increased comfort with the bike, but in any case, it caught me off guard and scared the crap out of me.
And I can't wait to do it again on my ride home. :-D

Commuting Is Fun
I pedaled my ass off to and from work today. This resulted in:
1.5+ minutes off my morning commute (16:03, 4.2 miles)
1.0+ minutes off my evening commute (20:49, 4.8 miles)
Yesh! :-D
I must admit, however, that part of the time gap between yesterday and today may be due to stoplights. Also, I have yet to finalize my evening commute route. We'll see about the lights and the route in a few more rides.
In somewhat amusing news, pink seems to be a popular color for my bike commute. Last week's pink T-shirt resulted in honking (which scared me the first time because I thought I was doing something wrong). Today's pink tank top earned a "You go, girl!" plus a hoot.
Or was it a "Whoo!"?
Speaking of "Whoo!" ... I hopped a medium-sized curb today and didn't kill myself. I know that may not sound like much to you, but the last (and, coincidentally, first) time I tried it I flew over my handlebars and into a bush. That was almost 10 years ago. Hooray for the bush.
And whoo me for not flying over my handlebars the second time around!

Short-Lived Bike Glory
In a short segment of my ride to work this morning, I sprinted for a green left turn light and made it, blew by another commuter on a mountain bike, and reached the top of the Caltrain overpass on Wolfe Road in a higher gear than on all of my previous passes.
Toward the top of the overpass, I was feeling pretty happy with myself.
And then a guy on a road bike powered up from behind and passed me. He left me some souvenir dust.
I think this means I need a road bike. ;-)

Best Commute Ever
Okay, not the best *ever*, but the best commute I've had in a long time. I rode my bicycle to work today, and the 20 minute pre-work workout made my morning. I'll probably do this more often as the weather gets nicer, since I've been putting more miles than I want to on my car, and my relatively short commute is snoring boring on my motorcycle.
This sure beats cardio at the gym.

Sea Otter Classic 2006
I finally made it to Laguna Seca today. Not for cars or for motorcycles, but for bicycles. Yes, bicycles. On the track, on the hills, in the mud, in the parking lot. Bicycles everywhere at the Sea Otter Classic.
I had a great time, despite my stomach still feeling not quite right, and despite getting a pretty nasty sunburn on my neck and arms. Sun, in northern California? Who woulda thunk it? We had sun, all right. Sun, blue skies, and fluffy clouds of the "imagine me into a random animal performing a random act sort," like the hippopotamus sliding on his belly whilst sticking his tongue out, and the fart-propelled fluffy frog.
And then home. And then a nap.
And now for some aloe.

Stupid Bike
Went for a ride on my bike (bicycle not motorcycle) yesterday. I remember now why I stopped riding it. The stupid gears won't shift properly, even after derailleur adjustments. 'Twas a decent commute bike since there weren't that many big hills on my route, but that doesn't do me much good these days.
Piece of shit. Rarr.
