Rumbly In Its Old Age

I've documented my car's life in this blog since the day I bought it, so I might as well continue.

The last time we saw our hero, the dealership had just replaced the battery draining brake light switch on VW's recall dime. I drove around with a portable jumper (thanks, April!) for a week until I was satisfied that my battery would hold a charge. I was bummed about potential damage to the battery from the deep discharge, but at least the extended reset got rid of the on again off again check engine light. (For now, at least.)

We took it down to Solvang last weekend, and it hit 100,000 miles on our drive back along Highway 1. Definitely a nice road to be on for that milestone. I felt a lot better after it reached 100,000; I'd been worrying for no good reason that it wouldn't.

Driving into work the next morning, I found myself unusually content with my car, and started wondering how many more miles I could get out of it. That evening, however, I smelled exhaust fumes from my vent at a stoplight. That can't be good. Today, I had my window open as I drove next to a wall. My car sounded deeper. "Wow," I thought, "my car sounds mean!" followed by, "Wait a minute, it's not supposed to sound like that." Uh-oh.

I guess I have some sort of exhaust leak. More miles, more maintenance, more money, cha-ching.

100K! That rocks! I love your car, even if it's always having minor issues. My Jetta baby is at 66K and rising.

oh yah PS I keep forgetting.. if you ever need VW maintenance on YOUR dime, and not VW's, absolutely go to "Palo Alto German Car" on El Camino just a few miles south of Page Mill Road. They are the BEST EVER. So reasonable and talented.
