Grinny Honk Good, Fraidy Honk Bad
At the end of the offramp on my way into work is a signaled right turn. This turns onto a busy three lane road. If the right lane is open, I'll make a turn on red. For some reason, this often alarms drivers in the middle lane, and causes them to honk at me. When I catch up to them, they often scowl at me for scaring them, to which I say, geez, quit being such a scaredy cat.
When I made this turn today, a passing truck in the middle lane honked. I looked over at the truck with my What Is Your Malfunction? face and saw a guy hanging out the window grinning at me. Hello to you too. The fact that you were honking to grin at me and not because you were scared I'd hit you made my day.

I can't tell from your description whether you stop at the signal. I'm assuming that if you're not, then it's someplace where you can legally turn on red? :-)
