Fried Dace

Andrea reminded me over Twitter today of a tasty Chinese canned fish I ate all the time as a kid: Fried Dace. I haven't had it in years, and this prompted me to go to the Chinese supermarket for a can. On my way home, I made a quick stop at Lion, where I found myself walking up and down the canned foods aisle looking, looking...

There were more varieties of canned sardines than I could count, but no fried dace. I walked up and down the aisle some more. Still no dace. Sadness.

When I went home, I asked the Great Internet why. It looks like my beloved fried dace has been deemed toxic, which is probably why I can't find it on the shelves anymore.

Personally, I'm willing to down a little malachite green in order to have my tasty fried dace. I'm sure the vast amounts of oil it's packed in would clog my arteries and kill me first anyway.

I at least got a good laugh out of all this from Amazon. They call it gourmet food. A can of fish, oil, and black beans for two dollars... gourmet! I guess it could be if you served it on a fancy plate, but that's moot now. Stupid regulations.

oh noes! no wonder i couldn't find any. =/ the roasted eel i had today was very similar. not the same, but close enough that it was ok since i hadn't had dace in forever to compare.
