4YourWheelz

Yes, the name sounds hokey, but their service and skill are excellent. [ Update: I now qualify the "service" part of that statement with the second portion of this post below. ] I always used to drive by and think "Ricer shop!" but they got a pretty good review on Yelp, so I decided to try them out. I rolled up, walked in, and someone came out right away to see what I needed. I explained to him that I needed to replace a bent wheel on my car. No problem, he said, that'll be twenty dollars. I handed him my keys and headed to the waiting area.

After last year's tire installation nightmare, I was afraid of what might happen next. Fortunately, nothing happened. Nothing, aside from what was supposed to happen. He took the damaged wheel off, unmounted the tire, remounted the tire on the new wheel, balanced it, and put it back on the car. Just like that. Done.

Now, it may be that he had an easier time because the new wheel is slightly different from the old wheel. The new one doesn't require an adapter to fit on the hub, so perhaps they also changed the way the tire bead sits on the rim to something more installation-friendly.

I guess I'll find out the next time I need new tires. I plan to come back.

Update: 2007-02-27

I noticed after I got the wheel replaced that the sidewall on that tire is damaged. It'd have been nice if they'd noticed it before sending me back out there (Am I mistaken to believe that a shop that does work on a car should look for things directly related to what they're doing that could be a potential hazard?), but whatever, at least I noticed it. I took my car back there this morning to get a new tire, calling first to see if they had the right size in stock. They said they did, and even the model I currently run. I said I'd be by in a bit, they said great, and half an hour later, I showed up with my car.

They brought my car in, took the wheel off, and then... nothing. I waited, and waited, and the finally the guy I'd been dealing with said they didn't have my tire so they went to pick one up and it was taking longer than usual to come back with it. What should have taken 15 minutes took almost an hour. This, I am VERY unhappy about. I would have been fine with getting a different tire, or going there later in the day so they had time to pick up the tire, but having to wait without being told that I'd have to wait, and being lied to about a tire being "in stock" is not okay.

I pretty much stated the above to them. No apology, just polite excuses about how the wait at the tire place was longer than usual. That's not the way to treat your customers. They're great at mounting tires on my stubborn rims, I'll give them that, but I definitely have a sour taste in my mouth from this last visit.

Do I still plan to come back? I don't know. Sigh.
