The Verdict

Meh.

I've been mulling over this center thing for a couple days. I don't hate it, but I sure don't love it. Two things I definitely need to work on: jumping back into offense quickly and getting back for defense just as quickly. I find this a challenge, but at least I know what I need to do. No big deal; there's plenty of things like this that I need to work on no matter what position I play.

The thing I'm not sure how to address is how to be two people at the same time. I'm supposed to cover open people in my zone. That's fine, but what if there are two? It feels like no matter who I pick, I've picked the wrong one, and people grumble. I don't like making people grumble.

Meh again.

here's the thing: if there are two people open, that means one of the defenders isn't doing her job. so why on earth should anyone grumble at you? (i speak as a defender who is getting better at not leaving my centers blowing in the breeze...)

That's how I thought it worked, too, but who knows? Maybe I'm missing something...

the most appreciated comment came from a coach when i got confused by who was supposed to be where. she said don't assume you're in the wrong place, the other two need to be aware of your position and adjust.

that said, i also appreciate a good center that covers *someone*, nothing more panic-inducing than seeing a free floater when both D are tied up. ;o)

also - when both D are on someone (thus leaving 2 floaters open) i find that i appreciate my center who's been paying attention during the game to how the other team is generally setting up and adjusts as necessary. i.e. do they dump the puck to the weak side post? then cover that person. do they put the puck into the high slot? get that person. no one should get annoyed if you do that and can explain it off-ice.
