Party In Charo's Trunk
Several moons ago, Liz asked if I could set up her trunk with lighting like mine. I said yes and added it to my list of things to do after I finished school.
Just under a moon ago, I finished school. This weekend, I decided it was time. There's nothing like 3 days off to knock a project off the list!
First order of business: pick up cold cathodes. Seemed easy enough. I figured I'd go to Fry's and take my pick of their various colors and sizes. Off I went to Fry's. I looked and looked, and finally asked an employee where they were. I was told they no longer stocked them. What?
I made pit stops at Radio Shack and Pep Boys on the way home from Fry's. Radio Shack had nothing (as expected), and Pep Boys had neon (overpriced and not what I wanted).
On Saturday, Aaron and I went to Action Computer in Sunnyvale. Nothing. We tried HSC. Also nothing. We went to a different Fry's, thinking that perhaps the Sunnyvale one was just lame. Also nothing. Sigh.
On Sunday, we tried Central Computer in Newark. They had two types of cold cathodes: blue and RGB. RGB? Is that white? It looked white. I asked the salesperson whether they had white. "RGB is white," he replied. I pointed out that the little color indicator labels on the packages listed white, and that this was not it. "It's white when we install it," he said. Okay, then. I bought two.
An hour later, we drove by a Central Computers on Stevens Creek, just down the street from Liz's house. Same chain? Yes. Gah.
This afternoon, install time! Everything went *mostly* as planned. I got all the wiring hooked up, connected the juice, and...
RGB. Just like the box said. Red, green, and blue. Like this, along the length of the tube:
WTF? That is definitely not white.
Since white was out of stock, I decided to just leave the RGBs in there and swap them out when white ones became available. Off I went. Night fell. And then, when I returned home:
Liz2D2: It *is* white!
Liz2D2: And party
Liz2D2: All at the same time
SoopahViv: what?!
SoopahViv: so it looks a party but you get white light to use?
Liz2D2: Yes!
SoopahViv: whoa
SoopahViv: cool
I haven't seen it in the dark yet, but I bet it looks like a rave in there.
