Bad Data Makes Me Cry
Got my hands on scoresheets from the two Fremont games yesterday. They included one missing roster and three full rosters with subs and no one marked absent. No goalie names anywhere, and no way to match the goalie jersey numbers written on the scoresheet. It's a good thing I saw who was playing in net for the two games!
I stared horrified at such bad data so early in the season, and was immediately motivated to send instructional reminder emails to the captains and coordinators. I really hope that's enough of a kick in the butt to make a difference.

Maybe it's just me (or rose colored memory), but when I played little league and such score/stat keeping was serious business. (We kept score on stone tablets! And we LIKED it!) If you're going to invest the time, doesn't it make sense to keep up with the data you generate while you play?

OK, I read that over and realize I'm preaching to the choir, but you know what I mean...

is that what i felt the other day? i thought it was a butt kick, but nobody was around. oh, virtual butt kicks!
consider it kicked, as i look at my stack of already-printed rosters. :-D

Thank you, Captain Cheddah!
Hey, you're a cheesy superhero!

well shit, the scorekeeper should be doing a better job too. there's no excuse for them to NOT put down a goalie.
(psst, cheddah, why did you print the rosters? they're not complete!)

I very often get goalie jersey numbers, but it's not always possible to match their number because I either don't know it or they're wearing a borrowed jersey. It's hard for the scorekeeper to tell who's in net in all that gear (and often because they don't know all the goalies), so without the roster, the best they can do is a number. Sure, they could ask (and I know some of them do), but officially that's the captains' job.
I was a bad captain last season; I never wrote down goalie names because I didn't know any better. Thus, the email to the captains this season. :)

rearry? good thing you mentioned the goalie thing - i always figured it was the scorekeeper's job.
(andrea - D'OH! well, i have a pile of scratch paper...)

The captains should help the scorekeepers by telling them who the goalies are. Not all of the scorekeepers know the goalies by sight. I think my old spam mail at the beginning of the season mentioned this, but then, the spam mail said a lot, so I'm sure people didn't read it in it's entirety.
BTW, there is one scorekeeper who hardly every writes in the goalies and usually just puts "White" and "Color" for the teams. :-)
For roster's you will find that some captains are good, some are not. Sometimes you just get a roster with no indication if anyone was absent, but then the score sheet shows subs. If anything is confusing when it comes to rosters, I would just mark everyone as there.

Yeah, I tried to keep the captain spam concise, but I also wanted to explain why it was important to do certain things. I hope the main points didn't get lost in the explanations.
I asked to be included in the goalie scheduling emails. spam++, but I hope it'll give me a good way to match and credit goalies when the captains and scorekeeper don't remember to write down a name.
When I get that pesky (damned squads screw everything up!) mega-uber-stats application done, there will be a phantom player and goalie who gets to enjoy all the unclaimed points and shutouts. Maybe when people see it they'll understand why they need to be better about getting their numbers right. Or maybe they'll all ask for corrections and create more work for me. It's worth a shot, though. I really want to see things work right!

everyone's gonna try to pick the phantom player at the drafts. i will LOL if someone mentions her.
i still maintain that it's the scorekeeper's job to get the goalie names down, it's on the scoresheet and there're two refs to ask if they don't know. once i come out to the bench, i've already got my roster done and my hands are full.
that said, i'll try to remember to put the goalie down after i get the bench (we usually don't know who's in net, though there was a period where we were told beforehand, but then goalies sometimes switch it up at the game and then we weren't told anymore.)

Yes, it's unfortunate that teams don't know who's in net for them until the goalie walks in the door.
Officially, though, it really is the captain's job: http://www.ncwhl.com/captain/captains.html
