Burninators Game 1: Seattle Teen Girl Squad

It's that time of year again. It's time for the annual Vegas tournament! We got to kick things off with a game against Teen Girl Squad. I found this matchup particularly amusing, since both teams got their names from Homestar Runner cartoons.

The game was pretty even. We felt a little slow and disorganized, but we had some nice plays and managed to squeeze by with a 1-0 win, thanks to a great backhand goal by Lucinda.

I finally executed something I've been mulling over in my head for months. When I take the puck down toward the other team's goal, I usually shoot as I near the faceoff dot. What better players (like Lindsay) do when they get there is they will curl around their defender and in toward the net. Last night, I did this for the first time. I only did it once, but I was totally happy that I had the presence of mind to do it, and it paid off, because taking the extra time to curl around meant that when I looked up I saw Lucinda coming in right in front of the net, and was able to send her a pass with three defenders and the goalie focusing their attention on me. She put a really nice shot on goal, too. And the amusing part: All the way down the ice after I entered the other team's zone, I repeated to myself in my head, "Think like Lindsay! Think like Lindsay!" Maybe if I do that more often I'll be able to dance the puck up, down, and around the ice too.

I liked most of the players on the other team, except for this one who seemed to find joy in taking out our players, slashing, tripping, hurling the puck through the air from one end of the ice to the other, mouthing off to both our skaters and the refs, and punching Sharon in the chest. After a period and a half of this the refs tired of it and started calling penalties on her. She finished the game with 4 minors.

Before the game, we got to the rink in time to watch the final period of the Black List game. It was great getting to cheer our friends on, and some of them returned the favor by staying for our game. I hope they make it to their final, so we can catch some of that game after game 3 on Saturday. Oh, and they won in overtime, finishing 1-0.

Next up, the California Polar Cats. We played them last year and I remember thinking they were pretty cool. I hope for a similarly positive experience with them tomorrow, although this time I hope to finish game with a win.

Off to midnight $2.99 steak and eggs. Viva Las Vegas!
