Soaked Subwoofer

My coolant has been mysteriously disappearing, so for my San Diego trip last weekend, I put a poorly-sealed jug of distilled water (alongside a jug of VW's ever-so-special pink stuff) in my trunk.

And, wouldn't you know, sometime yesterday the jug of water tipped and spilled all over my trunk.

The good news: I have a trunk tray, so my car was spared.

The bad news: The lower regions of my subwoofer's fuzzy wooden enclosure is soaked. It dripped when I picked it up. Siiigh.

I think I'll be spending some quality time with my subwoofer and a blow dryer tonight.

I wonder if I have to take the speaker out to dry the inside. What if the stuffing is wet too? Agh!

And, of course, I have school tonight, which means I'll probably get home much later than is appropriate for extended blow dryer noise. I guess I'll just sit there and blow on it. Huff. Puff. Phooooo...

The good news - the enclosure should be sealed/glued to not allow air to escape, so the water shouldn't have gotten inside to get to the stuffing. The bad news - if it's made out of particle board, that could be bad. The stuff seems to disintegrate when it gets wet, and the carpet on the outside will hold the moisture close to the particle board, accelerating the soaking of the particle board. I would recommend drying quickly, and then waiting to see if the particle board starts to flake or come apart (you'll probably have to peel up a bit of carpet to see this - depends on your enclosure). If it does, then you may have to replace that panel. The stuffing should be a polyester type batting, so I don't think the water will hurt it if it did somehow get inside, and if you're lucky the carpet had a water resistant backing, and this is all a moot point anyway. (not an audio expert, just an interested observer, so your mileage may vary)

Of course, this is always a good excuse to buy a new enclosure/sub...

I'm pretty sure it's particle board, which is why I wanted to take care of it right away, but there's that work thing, followed by that school thing, and really, it's the work thing (and maybe someday the school thing) that pays for toys like this, so the responsible long-term-outlook me decided to leave the subwoofer in my living room to dry on its own until I make it home tonight.

Judging from the amount of water I soaked up from the trunk tray, most of the gallon is in the subwoofer.

Oh, and this is our first real week of rainy season. The humidity today is 90%. Aie.

Darn responsibility. I've tried explaining to my boss that work eats up way too much of my free time, but all I get is mean looks.

In light of your response, I probably would pull the sub out just to make sure things were OK in there. Partical board can absorb a fairly large amount of moisture, and that's not good on contacts and speaker insides when it starts to condense inside the box. You have my sympathy, FWIW.
