My First Goalie Stint

My league is running short on goalies this season due to various injuries, so after my Red game I slapped on some loaner goalie gear and tried out my skillz (or lack thereof) at the Green practice. A few thoughts:

- It's weird trying to skate with those huge pads on.
- When you take 'em off your legs feel weightless. It's way cool.
- It's a *lot* different being on the receiving end of a shot.
- That stick is heavy! Works your shoulder like you wouldn't believe.
- It was nice to hang with my friends in Green Division.
- The puck hurts. Ow.

They didn't have a chest/arm protector that fit me, so I geared up in my regular shoulder and elbow pads. No one (except for Andrea) really shot all that hard, but one puck got through and hit my forearm, which hurt like a mofo! I've got a fatty purple and red bump on my left forearm now, and it hurts to flex it. Glad it's not my throttle side. I can still ride my bike.

I had no knee protection, either, so when I dropped for a shot I took a puck in the knee. Got me a nice bruise there, too.

Equipment issues aside, playing goalie is no easy task! Andrea was right about the passing out bit. Halfway through the session I stood up and the rink started going dark. Hrmm, maybe I should get down low and let the blood go back to my head. There, that's better. Rink lights coming back up. Phew!

All in all, I had fun. I let more shots in than I would have liked (duh, my objective is a big fat zero), but it wasn't so bad for a first time out. My right leg kicks like you wouldn't believe. My left leg has no clue what kicking's all about. I've got a lot to learn, but I'm looking forward to that. Yup, I'm gonna play in net again. Well, I hope.

This could get expensively ugly. Aie.
