Inherent

Twelve years ago, I asked:

Do you think people are inherently good or inherently evil?

I never answered this question here.

Twelve years ago, I believed that people were inherently evil, and it was societal norms, laws, enforcement, and consequences that kept us in line.

Twelve years ago, I was a lot angrier than I am today.

Today, I believe that most people are inherently good. When I see people do evil things, I wonder what happened to them, how they got messed up.

Today, I am generally happy.

I guess that answers my question, which wasn’t really about what you or I or anyone thought, but rather about what might actually be.

Having experienced both sides of that question I see that it’s neither.

Getting to experience both sides of that question and answer it firsthand is wicked freaking I am so lucky cool.
