And now for the annual wrap-up.
January: Played a lot of hockey. Had a good couple of tournaments. Won a championship and an MVP trophy. (W)
February: Started doing yoga. I am SO happy I did. I am stronger, more flexible, and haven’t pulled or tweaked any muscles riding or skating since. (W)
March: Discovered I have a weak right hip. Discovered also that I suck at jump roping. Took myself out for the second half of the month by bashing my knee on the ice. Missed the GTI. Fretted about the MS3 getting pooped on. Learned that I’d be managing instead of coding at work. (L)
April: Did my first pain-free, painkiller-free bicycle ride after more months than I can remember. Did a lot more rides after that. The last couple months of strengthening, stretching, and rolling finally started to pay off. Ran over a rattlesnake. We both survived. (W)
May: Fell off a bridge while riding my mountain bike. Fell off a couple more things at a mountain bike skills clinic. Fell downhill off my bike backward, hurt my back, and cracked my helmet. Survived it all without permanent damage and learned a lot in the process. Also found time to learn how to do a tripod headstand and win a hockey tournament in Dallas. (W)
June: Got back on the mountain bike. Happy, grateful, learned some more. Finished some unfinished business at St. Joseph’s Hill. Went back home to celebrate dad’s 60th birthday. (W)
July: Had a nice weekend in Mendocino. Avoided an endo on the mountain bike by jumping over the handlebars and landing on my feet as the bike flipped. Finished some unfinished business at Fremont Older. (W)
August: Flew off my mountain bike going really really fast (for me). Survived once again and learned a lot right up until the dismount. Learned how to do a bound headstand. (W)
September: Had a great trip to Lassen. Hiked to the top of a volcano and down into the middle of its cone. Learned how to fly in my dreams like Superman would if he were afraid of heights. Finally learned how to build a computer from parts. Started my season with the Lady Sharks. Impulse bought a pretty single speed that looks like a New York taxicab. (W)
October: Did a metric century on the road bike. Played four hockey games in one day at over 6,000 feet of elevation. Managed a hat trick in one of those games. Went back home to say goodbye to grandpa. I’ll miss him, but I know things are better now, especially for him. (W)
November: Played a lot of hockey. Rode up Mt. Hamilton. Found a second yoga teacher I really like. Learned how to do the Crow pose. (W)
December: Battled yet another skate pain. Stressed about Christmas presents. Ate a lot. Sat around waiting for the sun to come out. Enjoyed my birthday, Aaron’s birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. (T)
10-1-1 ain’t bad, eh? I learned a lot on the bike, the ice, and the yoga mat. I learned a lot at work, too, although I hope 2010 brings more coding and less managing.
One thing that didn’t come through in the monthly blog recaps: I lived in a pretty happy world last year. The sun was warm, the grass was green, flowers smelled wonderful, trees were beautiful in each of their various colors and shapes, babies were cute, food was tasty, music was groovy, my podcasts were interesting.
Realizing this makes me grateful. I’m grateful that I can see the world in this way, because there are plenty of others in this same world who notice only what troubles them, and not the beauty that surrounds them.
I’m also grateful for the people in my life. Realizing that makes me happy.
